San Mateo

San Mateo is one of the municipalities that make up Rizal Province. It is just a short drive away from Metro Manila, being bounded to the west by Quezon City and to the south by Marikina City. You will know you are leaving the National Capital Region by the landmark arch above General Luna Highway.

The town is known in history as the site of the Battle of San Mateo, which transpired between the Katipunan (under the command of Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto) and the Spaniards.

San Mateo is home to several resorts and tourist attractions, making it highly popular not just in the summer, but all year round. For those raring for a swim, you could try Timberland Sports and Nature Club, 9 Waves, or Ciudad Christhia Resort—but be prepared for the crowd in the summer. You could opt to go off-season, as Philippines’ tropical weather makes it more or less summer all year round.

There are Catholic churches such as Sto. Niño Parish Church, San Jose De Ampid Parish and Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu. Processions and festivities abound in these areas, especially during the Holy Week, where ornately decorated images are paraded around the town. The church of Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu, in particular, is a centuries-old historic church founded by Jesuits, and named after the image of the Virgin Mary from Aranzazu in Spain.

Speaking of history, an interesting place to visit would be the Eulogio Rodriguez Ancestral House—former governor of Rizal, and senate president. His home-turned-museum has commissioned art, mementos, old furniture and even the vehicle he used while he was in the senate. There is also the monument of Gen. Licerio Geronimo, who bravely fought against the Americans in another Battle of San Mateo.

While San Mateo is not lacking in foreign restaurants and fastfood chains, the locals still enjoy kakanin or rice cakes, which they obtain from the Guitnang Bayan marketplace and Primablend, along General Luna Highway. There is even a Kakanin Festival celebrated every September, in celebration of their delicious pastry.
