Siargao Island

On the eastern coast of the country lies a small tear-drop shaped island known to many as the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines.” This is the island of Siargao, located in the province of Surigao del Norte in Mindanao.

The most famous surfing spot is Cloud 9, known for its thick, hollow tube-like waves. There’s always plenty of surfers, as the waves are good all year round, with the peak season being between August to November.

Cloud 9 is also the site of the Siargao Cup, an annual local and international surfing competition held every September. People come from as far as Europe and North America to compete against the country’s best surfers.

Surfing isn’t the only water sport that you can do in Siargao though! Try out game fishing between the months of January to May. Who knows, you might just be able to catch your own lunch or dinner.

More of a spectator? Head on over to Cloud 9’s boardwalk where you can watch surfers do their thing from a safe distance. You can even catch the gorgeous Siargao sunset from here.

Beaches are aplenty in Siargao. There’s the beach of Naked Island, named as such because of its complete lack of accommodations, coconut trees, and everything else besides water and sand. It’s perfect for those who just want to catch some sun rays and soak in cool clear waters. Just make sure to load up on the SPF!

There’s also pristine Daku Island, with its crystal turquoise waters and powdery white sand. You don’t have to worry about getting a sunburn here, as there’s plenty of shade thanks to the coconut trees that surround the beach.

The more secluded islands of La Janosa and Mamon, just a few minutes away from General Luna town by boat, offer sand, surf, and snorkelling, without the crowds.

Don’t worry about finding a place to stay. There are plenty of resorts to be found in Cloud 9 and the neighboring town of General Luna. But if you’d rather sleep under the stars, there’s Guyam Island, a popular camping site among locals.

You actually don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy the Siargao Island. Sometimes all you need to do is to kick back, relax, and let the beauty of the island speak for itself.
