Silay

Silay, Negros Occidental is declared by the Department of Tourism as one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines. It is only 14 kilometers away from the City of Smiles, Bacolod City. The city is charming and small; there’s no need for long road trips or bumpy hikes to get you to where you want to be.

What really appeals most visitors about Silay City is its high regard for its history. It continues to maintain and restore all of its historical architectures, preserving their rich culture.

There are five must-see ancestral buildings found in the heart of the city. Balay Negrense, a large ancestral home built in 1898 by a Frenchman, Leopoldo Gaston. He was the first person to popularize the sugarcane industry on a larger scale when the Philippines opened its doors to global trade after the British-French War.

Fun fact, Negros Occidental is the sugarcane capital of the Philippines. Cities and towns in this province have been known to produce the sweetest and most delicious desserts in all of the Philippines.

In downtown Silay stands El Ideal Bakery, the oldest bakery in the city that continues to serve delicious pastries until 6 o’clock in the evening. After having a bite to eat, visit the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum, first owned by Don and Doña Jalandoni in 1908. It is a museum that continues to boast its native and foreign inspirations, as seen in the intricate detailing of the house. And just a short walk from here is Cinco de Noviembre, which is where the Negrense met and planned to revolt against the Spanish colonizers. It is historically significant to the people of not only Silay City but the entire Negros Occidental province. And lastly, if you’re up for a religious visit, you can check out the San Diego Pro-Cathedral, the only cathedral with a large dome in the province. Having been commissioned by a sugar baron in the 1920s, an Italian architect designed the church to be Romanesque, making it the only cathedral of its design in the country, outside of Metro Manila.

Aside from these historical sites, Silay also has the Patag Tourist Zone where it features natural wonders including, waterfalls, enchanted lakes, small springs, and many more. And while in Silay, why not end the day with a beautiful view of the sunset? The Mangrove Canopy is a small mangrove conservation that has a glorious viewing deck where you can watch the daylight fade. Perfect for a romantic stroll and a nightcap.
