Sorsogon

Sorsogon

Sorsogon, a small province found in the Bicol region, is one of the few places in the country where you can find yourself face to face with one of the largest mammals in the animal kingdom.

Head over to the shores of Donsol and you can swim with the butanding, also known as the whale shark. Don’t let their size fool you though, they’re some of the gentlest creatures on the planet. You can even spot a few manta rays in this area, they’re also pretty friendly!

In fact, whale sharks and manta rays aren’t the only sea creatures in this province. Visit Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary in Mantog and you can catch a glimpse of the diverse marine life that Sorsogon has to offer, thanks to its crystal clear waters. The lagoon is home to several schools of fish, crustaceans, and even sea turtles. You can feed them for a fee or you can just put on your snorkeling gear and paddle away.

Sorsogon is also growing to be a destination for surfers. Visit the beaches in the town of Gubat and you’ll find yourself taking on six foot (1.8 m) waves. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert, you can get surfing lessons here for just around ₱200 (US$5) per hour.

Speaking of beaches, Sorsogon has plenty of them to choose from. There’s the Subic Beach and Tikling Island, both found in Matnog and both famous for their pink sand. There’s also the Panumbagan Sand Bar in Castilla, where you can enjoy a freshly caught seafood lunch on the beach’s shore, as long as you coordinate with the local tourism office.

But perhaps the province’s most unique beach is Paguriran Island in the town of Bacon. The island features a white sand beach and a saltwater lagoon, thanks to the rock formations that surround the area.

If salt water isn’t your thing though, take yourself to the town of Irosin, famed for its natural spring pools. Visit Mateo Hot and Cold Spring to soothe your tired and aching body.

But if you find yourself getting sick of the water, there’s climbing up Mount Bulusan, an active volcano. The hike can be done within a day but the volcano’s crater is at its most beautiful just after the crack of dawn, so it’s best to camp out overnight.

Mount Bulusan’s summit offers you a spectacular view over Sorsogon and on clear days, you can even spot Mount Mayon in Albay from a distance. The area is also home to various types of animals, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

From swimming with whale sharks to hiking up an active volcano, Sorsogon certainly is an exciting place to be. It may be small, but what for what it lacks in size, the province makes up for in memories and experiences.
