South Cotabato

South Cotabato is best known as the home of the Dreamweavers, women of the indigenous T’boli tribe who weave their dreams into the sacred T’nalak cloth. In this southern province of Mindanao, you’ll find a peaceful haven of indigenous culture and breathtaking natural wonders.

Most travelers enter South Cotabato through General Santos City, a highly urbanized city famous for its large yellowfin tuna landings and as the hometown of world-renowned boxer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. From here, travelers can take a short drive to the vast pineapple-laden plantations and Durian Garden of Polomolok.

A trip to South Cotabato wouldn’t be complete without a visit to its main attraction, Lake Sebu. Nestled within the South Cotabato highlands, the town of Lake Sebu looks like a scene lifted from a fantasy book. You’ll find yourself surrounded by cool mists, towering mountains, cascading waters, lush greenery, and sparkling lakes adorned with lotus flowers.

You can immerse yourself in local indigenous culture and discover more about the T’boli tribe while exploring their famed ancestral land. Visitors can stay in a T’boli family’s home, cruise along the lake in a traditional T’boli owong (lawaan wood canoe), watch traditional performances, or learn about the art of T’nalak weaving.

Travelers also flock to Lake Sebu to trek to the Seven Waterfalls, whose waters come from the outflows of Lake Sebu and Siloton. And if you’re in the mood for a more thrilling experience, try gliding above the waterfalls using one of the country’s highest ziplines, the Seven Falls Zipline.

Journey to the municipality of T’boli and you’ll find Lake Holon, whose pristine waters are said to be inhabited by enchanted creatures like the diwata (Philippine nature spirit). The serene lake is housed in the crater of Mt. Parker, locally known as Mt. Melibingoy, a popular trekking and camping destination in South Cotabato.

Mountain lovers can also try out the challenging hike up Mt. Matutum, a towering volcano in the Tupi municipality with an elevation of 2,286 meters. The summit offers a rewarding view of Mt. Parker, the Daguma Mountain Range, Mt. Apo, and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, and Polomolok.

South Cotabato is also home to some interesting local delicacies like sinanglay (tilapia fish cooked in coconut milk), adobo sa kawayan (local stew cooked in bamboo), and sinigang sa pakwan (meat in watermelon and tamarind soup).

You can bring home your very own piece of South Cotabato cuisine by buying some of the province’s signature durian products like durian jam and durian ice cream. And if you want to help support the T’boli’s age-old Dreamweaver culture, you can also purchase one of their beautiful and skillfully crafted T’nalak weaves.
