South Triangle

The stories behind the streets of South Triangle, Quezon City are just as vibrant as the lights and restaurants that line them and as colorful (and even tragic) as those told on screen by the TV networks in the area.

Sgt. Esguerra Avenue, for example, was formerly known as Bohol Avenue. Eventually named after Sergeant Eduardo Esguerra, the lone casualty of efforts to retake the offices of a media network from rebel soldiers who staged a coup against then-president Corazon Aquino. The whole stretch of Sgt. Esguerra Avenue is now home to numerous restaurants and establishments.

Head to Don Andres for authentic Peruvian cuisine or to Livestock Restaurant and Bar for one of the best crispy pata (pig knuckles) you’ll ever eat. In the mood for unlimited food? Try El Cangrejo Crab, Seafood and Steak Bistro for unlimited crab and steak every Tuesday and Thursday or unlimited oyster and bottomless wine every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Those searching for sneakers, logo tees, and other streetwear will enjoy shopping at the flagship store of Progress, which is located at the corner of Sgt. Esguerra and Sct. Borromeo street. Named after Air Scout Observer Gabriel Nicolas Borromeo, Sct. Borromeo is one of the seven streets in South Triangle named after the members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines who perished when their plane crashed on July 28, 1963.

Sct. Madriñan street, named after Senior Scout Pathfinder Paulo Cabrera Madriñan, is where you can find Il Terrazzo. Housing favorites such as Banapple Pies & Cheesecakes and Omakase, it stands at the corner Sct. Madriñan shares with popular restaurant row Tomas Morato Avenue, which in turn got its name from the first ever mayor of Quezon City.

The streets of Sct. Madriñan and Sct. Borromeo intersect with Mother Ignacia Avenue. Home to restaurants such as Pamana, which serves Filipino cuisine, and Kandle Cafe, it was named after Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, the founder of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary. Born in 1663, the young Ignacia left home at the age of 21 to pursue a religious life contrary to what her parents wanted.

Timog Avenue, one of the main roads that borders what was once known as the Diliman Estate, a 1,572-hectare property purchased as part of what was supposed to be the new capital of the country, also teems with restaurants such as Dampa sa Timog and establishments such as 360 Fitness Club.

Locals go to South Triangle not only for its many dining and leisure options. Fans of local celebrities flock to the areas in hopes of sighting their loved idols as two of the county’s biggest networks, ABS-CBN and GMA Network, are located along Eugenio Lopez Drive and Timog Avenue, respectively.

In search for preloved, bargain items such as bags and apparel? Or how about vintage pieces that you might not find elsewhere? Keep a look out for Uber Finds, whose shop is located at the corner of Eugenio Lopez Drive and Sgt. Esguerra.
