Sta. Ana

Santa Ana’s eclectic architecture adds to its charm; old Spanish-era houses complete with Capiz shell windows coexist with more modern-looking buildings. It was miraculously spared from heavy damage in WWII, leaving a lot of its infrastructure intact. Santa Ana is very close to the city, being next to Makati and Mandaluyong, making it highly accessible.

Santa Ana is also known as the “Heritage District”: with several 19th century ancestral houses still standing in the district to this day. Examples of these would be the ancestral houses of Amparo-Santos, De la Merced-Panis and Santaromana residences. A number of these houses are open for public viewing, and best experienced with a guide from the Santa Ana Heritage Association.

Its history goes even farther back than the Spanish era: Santa Ana was at the heart of the precolonial area of Namayan; trade with China and our Southeast Asian neighbors took place in the very area.

The Parish of Our Lady of the Abandoned, Santa Ana’s parish church which was built in the 18th century, still stands to this day. Its Baroque structure and ornately handpainted ceiling are sights to behold, but the actual treasures (literally named as National Cultural Treasures by the National Museum) are the Camarín de la Virgen chapel and the church patio-turned-museum.

Religious attractions in Santa Ana cater not only to Roman Catholics. Just behind the parish church is a Taoist Temple. There is also an Iglesia ni Cristo Museum at the Punta community. This part of the district is exactly where Felix Manalo started the religion in the early 20th century.

If you pass by Syquia and Roxas streets, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the Philippines-Thailand Friendship Circle, a roundabout with unique statues commemorating the relationship between the two countries.
