Sta. Mesa

Santa Mesa is a district at the eastern portion of Manila. It is easily accessible via the Light Rail Transit (LRT) line 2. This busy, urban part of Manila is known for its role in Philippine history as the site of the first casualty of the Philippine-American War, particularly at the San Juan Bridge.

The etymology of its name goes way back to the Spanish colonial period, where it was allegedly named after a brotherhood that did social work at that time.

Around the 1950s, Santa Mesa experienced suburban development, going from just another Sampaloc barrio to its bustling status now. It now has several communities, Christian and Baptist churches, a hospital, schools (including the Polytechnic University of the Philippines) and a large SM shopping mall. SM City Santa Mesa is, in fact, one of the first places you will see, if you’re coming from the LRT2.

There are some unique historical sites to see at Santa Mesa, like the Mabini Shrine, currently located at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. It is a replica of the actual house in Pandacan, in which Apolinario Mabini spent his final days. There is also the Apolinario Mabini Museum, where one can view memorabilia of the Philippine revolutionary leader.

Santa Mesa has eats such as Sabroso Comfort Food, Yvan Navy, Pan de Cielo Bakeshop and Jugno’s Monster Pizza. There are several local and foreign fast food chains around the area, especially at SM City Santa Mesa. The district also has a public park at Bacood where you can stroll around, or bring kids to frolic around at the playground.
