Subic Bay Freeport Zone

Just a two hour drive from Manila northwest is the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. This former US military naval base is the first of its kind to successfully become a tax- and duty-free zone in the Philippines.

There’s a lot more to do in Subic than gawk at clothing tags with US dollar prices and gigantic bottles of imported liquor. This port is filled with adventurous activities that are sure to thrill all visitors who come its way.

If you actually want to visit the docks, head over to the Subic Bay Yacht Club. In this luxurious club, you can stay in any of their deluxe rooms and gain access to their amenities, which include a gym, swimming pool, basketball court, and playground.

If you want to actually get your feet (and more) wet, spend the day at Camayan Beach, where you can scuba dive over coral reefs and through shipwrecks. Resorts on the beach also rent out kayaks and jet skis for use around the bay.

Beside Camayan Beach is another popular tourist attraction: Ocean Adventure. You can watch shows and performances starring the resident marine creatures and even get up close and personal with cute dolphins and sea lions.

Waiting in lines and paying entrance fees aren’t necessary if you want to get close to certain furry animals. The trees of Subic are home to thousands of Philippine Giant Fruit Bats that fill the sky once the sun sets. The road to Zoobic Safari is ruled by Philippine long-tailed Macaques, who aren’t afraid to jump on your car to ask for food.

In Zoobic Safari, you can ride on a safari jeepney through the Ilanin Forest and witness wild animals in their natural habitat. The zoo also has a Sky Safari where guests can go ziplining, a petting zoo, and a ride through the animal enclosure for close encounters with tigers.

Visitors can sharpen their survival skills by going to the Jungle-Environment Survival Training (JEST) Camp. This boot-camp themed survival school is a treat for guests of all ages. Experienced instructors teach you everything from gathering food in the jungle to fashioning weapons out of bamboo. To truly test what you’ve learned, you can sign up for a night in the wilderness with nothing but your wits or a trek through the Apaliin trail.

Bats aren’t your only companions if you plan on going out for the night. Subic nightlife includes live music sessions in bars or trying your luck in one of the many casinos that keep the bay well lit.
