Taal

Taal, Batangas is a small heritage town blessed with buildings dated during the Spanish colonial era. Taal town is a haven for history junkies and for young Filipinos who want to see a glimpse of the past. This town is not as popular as Vigan for its historical qualities but it also showcases similar traditional architecture that everyone should enjoy.

The town is abundant with history museums, ancestral homes, and old churches. A visit to the Heritage Village is a must. The intricate and elegant details on the ancestral homes would make you want to be part of this era. One of the more popular houses tourists can visit is the Old House of the Agoncillo family, where it remains to be a spectacle — making you feel as if you were still in the Spanish Era.

And while touring the colonial-era streets, and visiting the houses of Doña Marcela Agoncillo or Don Leon Apacible, might as well indulge in the delicacies of Batangas. Some of the Taaleño favorites include, fried tawilis (the fish that can be found in Taal Lake), suman (rice cake) dipped in local chocolate, and anchovies wrapped in banana leaves and steamed in a clay pot.

Foodies, history enthusiasts, and even the religious can find something to do in Taal town. Other than paying a visit to centuries-old churches, there is a place called the Miraculous Spring, where Our Lady of Casaysay was believed to have appeared. This spring, however, is a little bit hard to find without a little help. It’s better to have a local take you to this secret refuge!

Taal is quaint but it prides itself to be the home of the Philippines’ most well-maintained and restored historical dwellings and religious places.
