Tagbilaran

Aside from being Bohol’s capital city, Tagbilaran City is also known to many travelers as the main gateway into Bohol province. While Tagbilaran serves as a starting point for journeys to Bohol’s other tourist hotspots, the city is actually home to historical sites and delicious Boholano eats that make it worth a spot on every traveler’s itinerary.

Enjoy a stunning view of Bohol Sea and learn more about Philippine history by visiting Tagbilaran’s Sandugo, or “Blood Compact Shrine”. Created by Boholano sculptor and National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva, the monument immortalizes the historic sandugo, or “one blood” tradition, performed by Bohol chieftain Datu Sikatuna and Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565.

Tagbilaran City is also home to Bohol’s National Museum branch and the historic St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, which was named after the city’s patron saint, St. Joseph. Also known as the Tagbilaran Cathedral, it was one of the first six parishes founded in Bohol by Jesuit Missionaries.

Locals also honor the city’s patron saint every year with the colorful Tagbilaran City Festival. Another city festivity, “Saulog, Tagbilaran”, has also been gaining popularity thanks to its colorful array of community activities, which include a fluvial parade, a street dancing competition, a nightly carnival, sports activities, and the “Mutya ng Tagbilaran” beauty pageant.

Some of Bohol’s hottest dining spots can also be found in Tagbilaran City. One local favorite you shouldn’t miss is Payag Restaurant’s popular chicken inato, which is Bohol’s signature take on Bacolod province’s classic barbecue chicken dish, chicken inasal.

You can also have your fill of classic Filipino dishes at Gerarda’s Restaurant, indulge in the upscale prawn dishes of Prawn Farm Restaurant, or feast on the seafood meals of JJ’s Seafood Village, which offers guests a full view of Tagbilaran Bay.

If you’re craving that classic Pinoy barbecue experience, check out Acacia De Bubu, one of the most popular joints among Tagbilaran locals. Order from their table of assorted local favorites like isaw (chicken intestine), atay (liver), paa (chicken feet), liempo (pork belly), and the classic pork barbecue and they’ll grill each item for you on the spot.

Once you’re done exploring the city, you can try taking a side trip to nearby destinations like Dauis Church, Hinagdanan Cave, Punta Cruz Watch Tower, the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary, and the historic national historical treasure, Baclayon Church.

Remember to pick up some traditional Bohol pasalubong from any of the city’s groceries or souvenir shops before leaving. Peanut Kisses, Dalareich Tableya (hot chocolate), and Calamay (sticky candy in coconut shells) are just some of the signature Boholano comfort treats that are sure to have you reminiscing about your adventures in Tagbilaran.
