Tawi-Tawi

Tawi-Tawi, located in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), is an island province often called the “Venice of the South” because of its main canal in Sitangkai. Tawi-Tawi is also known for its unspoiled beaches, landscape scenery, and picturesque views. Since the area consists of a predominantly Muslim population, its people, culture, and religious architecture is strikingly different from the rest of the Philippines.

Visit its capital, Bongao, and experience the hustle and bustle of Mindanaoan life. Walk around and look at the shops, the markets, and experience its provincial lifestyle. Hike to Bongao Peak, the province’s highest peak, if you want to get away from the fast-paced lifestyle and enjoy the fresh air.

Southeast of the capital is the island of Simunul, where the first mosque in the Philippines was built in 1380. Visit the Sibutu Island and learn about how boats and ships are made from some of the finest ship builders. Many white sand beaches that aren’t overrun by tourists can also be found in Sibutu. Finally, head to the southernmost tip of the country, the Saluag Island, to visit its lighthouses and go on more beach adventures.

Although Tawi-Tawi proves to be a promising visit, it does not get as much visitors due to Mindanao being an at-risk area for travelers. Nonetheless, one can still say it is a hidden gem in its own right.
