Tayabas, Quezon is one of the smaller cities in the country with only a little less than 100,000 inhabitants. Though small, it boasts of several tourist attractions and delicacies that every visitor should at least get a taste of.
But first, you should go on a historical excursion in the city. With at least five historical places to choose from, you’re definitely feel like you’re time-traveling. First, visit Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel and then on to the Mortuario de Cementerio de los Indio, then Casa Comunidad de Tayabas, which was actually the city’s old tribunal and has been officially filed as a National Historical Landmark. Two of Tayabas’ bridges were built during the 1800’s, making them worth a visit. With their Spanish design and strong structure, the Malagonlong Bridge which happens to be the longest Spanish bridge in the Philippines, and Alitao Bridge are must-see places while in Tayabas.
And since this city is famous for its delicacies, why not go on a food trip? They can fill your stomach but fear not, it’ll hardly make any difference to your wallet. First, go to Kalye Budin where they make specialty cassava cakes or Budin cakes. Also, try the yema (custard candy) cake. Perfect for those with sweet tooth out there!
Now, if you’re into seafood, Tayabas has got you covered as well. At the Kamayan sa Palaisdaan, they serve only the freshest fish. They literally catch the fish before your very eyes before cooking and serving them to you. Some of their specialties include grilled squid, crispy beef tadyang (ribs), inihaw na hito (grilled catfish), and inihaw na pla-pla (grilled tilapia). And if you’re feeling a little down for the local stuff, you definitely have to try the lambanog.
Famous in the province of Quezon, the lambanog is a cheap wine made from coconuts. It only sells for at least a hundred pesos (2 USD) per gallon.
