Tondo

The historic district of Tondo gets a lot of flack. For natives of Manila, Tondo is polluted, congested, and overpopulated. It’s not exactly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

And yet, there’s more to Tondo than meets the eye.

It’s one of the oldest districts in the country, dating back to the year 900 AD. It’s the birthplace and hometown of one Andres Bonifacio, leader of the Katipunan, a group that fought for Philippine independence during the late 1800s.

The district is also home to one of the most visited churches in the country, the Santo Niño de Tondo Church. Completed in 1625, this church is also one of the oldest in the country.

Being the birthplace of the Katipunan movement, Tondo commemorates the founding of the revolutionary group with a sculptural relief by local artist Ros Arcilla. The sculpture features the five founders of Katipunan set against the various flags and insignias of the group. It can be found at the corners of the busy Recto and Elcano streets.

Tondo is also home to one of the five “freedom parks” in the city of Manila. In the “freedom parks,” crowds can freely gather to protest or rally, without needing a permit.

Tondo’s “freedom park” is called Plaza Moriones and it can be found just outside of Intramuros, on Moriones Street.

The plaza is noted for being one of the few linear plazas in the country. Numerous trees shade the area and there are benches where visitors can sit and enjoy a packed lunch.

Aside from its historic significance, Tondo is also a bargain hunter’s paradise. The district is home to the 168 Shopping Center, also known as Divisoria. It’s one of the biggest wholesale markets in the country, and you can get bargains on anything from fruits and vegetables to furniture and appliances.

Don’t let the negative press about Tondo get to you. There’s actually a lot of charm and heart to this historic district.
