Tuguegarao

If you’re traveling to Cagayan, it’s highly likely that you’ll pass through Tuguegarao City, the thriving heart of Cagayan province. Aside from being the provincial capital and main gateway into Cagayan, the city is also known for holding the country’s hottest recorded temperature at 42.2 °C.

But famed temperature records aside, Tuguegarao City is also home to centuries-old churches, one of the country’s longest bridges, an iconic local noodle dish, and several other attractions that make the city a sizzling hot tourist destination.

Once you’re in the city, drop by the Cagayan Provincial Capitol complex to see the grand provincial capitol building. Guests can take a stroll around the capitol’s peaceful gardens or learn about the history of Cagayan province at the nearby Cagayan Provincial Museum and Historical Research Center.

One famous landmark you shouldn’t miss is Tuguegarao City’s Saints Peter and Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, the biggest Spanish-built church in the Cagayan Valley region. Built by the Dominicans in 1761, this Baroque-style church boasts a stunning facade of vibrant red bricks and massive white pillars.

Continue your historical tour around the city by visiting the St. Hyacinth Church, an elevated brick church whose construction dates back as early as 1604. You can also take a traysi (tricycle) or calesa (horse-drawn carriage) to the Horno Ruins, where you’ll find remnants of the Spanish-era brick kilns that provided the baked bricks for Tuguegarao City’s historic churches.

Tuguegarao City is also a good jump-off point to Cagayan province’s famous Callao Caves, where archaeologists uncovered the 67,000-year-old remains of the Callao Man. After exploring the seven-chamber limestone cave, travelers can enjoy a scenic boat ride along the Pinacanauan River and watch as thousands of bats take flight from the lush forests surrounding the river.

After a long day of exploring the city, treat yourself to a scenic sunset by the Cagayan River, the country’s longest and largest river. Rest along the river bank and you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the majestic Buntun Bridge, the country’s longest river bridge. This truss-type bridge crossing the Cagayan River also ranks second among the country’s longest bridges.

Complete your Tuguegarao City experience by enjoying a different kind of nightlife at Bonifacio Street, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. Come sundown, the street transforms into a vibrant shopping hub filled with portable boutiques and excited shoppers. You’ll also find plenty of food stalls selling local street food delicacies like fish balls, mami, goto, fried chicken, and pancit.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to some Pancit Batil Patung, an iconic local delicacy made with miki noodles and an overload of meat and vegetable toppings. You’ll find this celebrated noodle dish almost anywhere in the city, from the simple roadside stalls of Bonifacio Street to the more popular establishments like Jomar’s Panciteria.

You can also sample some of the city’s Tuguegarao Longganisa (local sausage) or have a cup of the province’s local, Cagayan-blend coffee. Tuguegarao is also known for its carabeef meat, so make sure to stop by the Lighthouse Cooperative for some carabeef products, carabao chicharon, and carabao milk candy to bring back home from your trip.
