We tried it for the first time last week. They have lunch specials. My colleague ordered the Sushi Platter (around P300+) and I reluctantly ordered the Tempura set (P480). I thought it was too much to spend for a weekday lunch but I gave in. The menu said 4 big prawns. Anyway, we were pleasantly surprised when the food was served. The serving was big and totally worth the price. The sushi plate was BEAUTIFUL. The seafood looked fresh, and my colleague was happy with her order. The menu didn't lie. My prawns were BIG! There was a big piece of eggplant and onion tempura. Our lunch sets came with appetizers - soup, salad, a tuna dish and one with small shrimps. I also had a cup of Japanese rice. I had to share two of my prawns with another colleague who joined us. The tempura batter was perfectly crisp. The presentation was beautiful. The Tempura platter can be shared by two people. I will come back to try the rice bowls and a la carte menu. My only criticism is that the waiter needs more training in terms of dish familiarity. But I still give it 5 stars for our overall experience on this visit.

We ordered Tom Yum, Phad Thai, Prawn Cakes and Beef Rendang.

Tom Yum - 4.5 stars. The flavor is perfect. The serving is a bit small, but perfect to share with my hubby since we ordered a lot. My only criticism is that it did not contain big prawns. Instead, it has medium shrimps, about 4 or 5. Nonetheless, the shrimps tasted fresh and were cooked perfectly.

Phad Thai - 4.5 stars. The plating is very pretty. The waiter mixed it for us. The photo was taken after it has been muxed already. Noodles are al dente. Flavor is spot on. It would have been perfect with just a bit of chili.

Prawn Cakes - 4.5 stars. Very crunchy which I love. It tasted great, I can really taste the prawns. However, the color of the meat is white and has a consistency of a squidball so I am not sure if this was made from scratch. Tasted great anyway. We ate only half so we took home leftovers. I heated the leftovers the next day and it still tasted great.

Beef Rendang - 3.5 stars. It was just ok. Beef is flavorful but was a tad dry. The veggies are cooked well - still crunchy.

Thai Iced Tea - 5 stars. Really good!

Service - 5 stars. The restaurant was practically empty when we came in Sunday night. We were served well.

For the price (Php559) and the hype, I was sorely disappointed. The buttermilk chicken isn't bad, but it was not spectacular either. It is so easy to make buttermilk chicken and I expected better. The only value add is that they serve boneless pieces. Oh, I love the coleslaw side dish, and at Php59, I thought it was great value for money. The food itself might be 3.5/5 but what pulled my score down is the horrible service we experienced today.

We arrived at 1:30pm. I requested for a table for two, and I was told we are fourth in the list. The waitress assigned to welcome the guests also asked for my phone number. After I gave the number, I told her we will just wait by the chairs on the side, which I assumed were really provided for waiting customers. While waiting, I noticed a few customers already ushered to their tables by a male staff - not the lady who first welcomed us. I assumed they were the other parties ahead of us in the wait list. However, after the fourth party was given a table, I stood up and approached the waiter. I told him we are number four in the list. He apologized and told us there's another table already available but still being cleaned. He took our order while we are waiting, again seated in the waiting area. While waiting, another group was led to a table. What the heck?! We were finally seated after a while. 10 minutes after we were seated, I received a text message from Kettle informing me that our table is now available and to please confirm if we are still coming. Grr.

After we were done eating, I waved to a waitress so I can ask for the bill and to wrap our leftovers. She acknowledged me with a smile and started walking towards us. She was intercepted by another table which she entertained for a minute. She then continued walking past our table. Hello! Did you forget about me? I had to call her as she walked by.

Not going back there again. So-so food. Unacceptable service. It wasn't even the busiest hour even.

I came for some alone time today and I wanted a salad. I ordered the Chipotle Yucatan Chicken Salad - grilled seasoned chicken breast on a bed of lettuce and other veggies, tossed in cilantro lime dressing. I was warned that the serving is huge but I didn't care as I planned to eat the leftovers later this afternoon. However, I was still shocked to see the huge platter. Anyway, the salad is so good! The chicken was warm, well-seasoned, moist and tender. The veggies are fresh and crunchy, and the dressing is light and refreshing. I ate half of it, and I would have eaten more, pero nahiya ako. Haha! I ordered jasmine green tea to go with my salad. Perfect! I also received great customer service from the time I walked in until I left.

I just hope they would offer smaller servings of their salads, maybe an option for a small plate.

Food is superb! Each dish is science + art on a plate. They are a feast for the senses - visually delightful, appetizing aroma, and a mix of flavors, tenperature and textures in your mouth. I picked the ten-course meal and I enjoyed every single dish, though some are better than the others. One of my favorites - Beer Urchin. Fresh sea urchin and dried orange topped with powdered foie gras and black beer foam. OMG! The brine-y urchin, sweet orange, bitter beer and creamy foie gras all in one spoonful. The foie gras has been frozen and served in powdered form. It melted on contact with my tongue. First, the cold felt a bit shocking, then I tasted the creamy flavor, then it interacts with the urchin, orange and beer. It was brilliant! Another favorite - Ravine. Layers of avocado and cilantro creme, coconut meat, flaked blue crab meat, a sprinkling of aligue, squash pebbles which was cooled in liquid nitrogen. The dish is served smoking from the frozen squash pebbles, then buko juice is poured into the bowl by the server. Just like beer urchin, this one engages all the senses with the aesthetics, temperature, texture and flavor of the dish. It was amazing. Lastly, my favorite dessert - Cassava. It might seem simple but it's quite complex. Cassava was simmered in carabao's milk for three hours resulting to a firm and super creamy (not starchy!) cassava pieces. It was topped with two kinds of milk skin - toasted and sprinkled with Biasong (kaffir zest). OMG, the milk skin is to die for. I asked how they make the skin and the server invited me into the kitchen. The kitchen staff showed me how they do it. Awesome! Other than the food, I love the open kitchen. It's not like most open kitchens I see in restaurants. Here, the guests are welcome to watch the food preparation and the kitchen staff are more than happy to explain how they do things.

The only thing I wasn't impressed with is the interiors. Considering this is Vask's fine dining section, the interiors fell short of my expectations. It was too plain. I would have wanted a better backdrop for that glorious food.

First, the food. It was ok. Maybe 3.5 to 4 out of 5. I love the Passion Fruit Mango Tea (tall glass in photo). It had complex flavors and texture from the mango, passion fruit seeds and sago. It is very refreshing. The mango yakult tasted good though my hubby couldn't tell if it's really mango. He described it as flavored Yakult. The garnish is an orange wedge. I thought it is weird to have an orange garnish for a mango flavored drink. We asked the server if it is really mango Yakult and she said yes, and they just used an orange garnish. I also ordered Deep Fried Tofu in Tempura sauce. Hubby and I loved it, too. Hubby is not a fan of tofu but he liked this one. The rest of our food is just ok.

The service was terrible this visit. I'll givebit a 1 out of 5. It's a Sunday night but it was past 8pm and the restaurant is only about half full. The waitress assigned to us had only one other table to serve - I know because of how most Bistro restos are set up. The server's name is written on the table so I know which tables she is serving. Anyway, she is nowhere in sight and we had to call another waitress to get our order. The waitress assigned to us served all our food but she seemed to be always in a rush to go back to where she's been hiding and didn't even bother to pause to ask if we needed anything else. Since no one was around, we just got the extra plates and napkin from the next table. Also, we ordered the self-grilled beef shortribs which is in the bestsellers list. We were asked if we want to grill it ourselves and we said yes. Not sure why they asked since the menu said "self-grilled". Anyway, the dish was served to us already cooked. Really disappointing. We ordered dessert, and no one bothered to clear our table before serving the dessert. Overall, I felt bad paying them the service charge built into our bill.

The Café Mediterranean

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants for the simple reason that they serve good food. Today I tried one of their new offerings, the chickpea soup (top right). It is only Php95 a cup (option for a bigger bowl is available). The soup is quite hearty. It is a good soup to start a meal, and is filling enough to be a stand alone snack., great for a rainy day. The chef didn't scrimp on the veggies - cubed carrots, green beans and chickpeas. The broth is very flavorful. I can taste a hint of cumin which I love! It is SPICY! I can tolerate a bit of heat so it's ok with me but if you don't like it spicy, you might want to tell the waiter. The menu did not say that this is going to be spicy so I was surprised. For my main course, I ordered the Portobello Mushroom Burger (bottom right) which is among my favorites here. It looks small but it is quite filling, specially when paired with the soup. It is a bit expensive at Php360 but it is rich in flavor and very satisfying. My husband orders only one thing from their menu - grilled Chicken Mediterranean Style. He always pairs is with buttered rice. There are other options if you don't like buttered rice. I also ordered Lemon Mint Juice which is lemonade with mint. Very refreshing. I ordered it with syrup on the side so I can control the sweetness. My hubby ordered mango shake which he enjoyed. I like that they keep their regular offerings and introduce seasonal dishes to keep the menu interesting.

I only have good things to say about Eskaya. Quick and easy reservation process. I emailed and got a response in minutes. Beautiful rooms. We stayed in a villa with its own infinity pool facing the ocean. Bliss. The restaurant serves great food. We ate all our meals there. With a place this beautiful, why would we leave? Steak is cooked perfectly the way I wanted (medium). Grilled squid is the best we tasted so we ordered it twice. It was grilled perfectly so the squid is tender. The squid itself is well-seasoned, and so is the stuffing of onions, tomatoes and herbs. The deconstructed pinakbet with lechon kawali - winner! Breakfast is always great. Perfectly poached eggs for me, sunny side up for my hubby. Service is top notch. I swear, the waiters can read our minds. The room is always spotless. It feels like they are hiding somewhere waiting for us to go out and they will quickly come in to clean. Definitely worth every peso we paid.

The Wholesome Table

This is my second visit. I came with my colleague for lunch. I ordered the Farmer's Bowl soup which I also ordered the first time I went there. Steaming hot light broth, some veggies like squash, corn, kale. It also has one prawn. Love it. It's light, tasted fresh, and a perfect starter to a good meal. We shared a Turkey Scotch Egg. It was just ok. As a cooking enthusiast, I am more curious about how it was made. How do you wrap a soft boiled egg with turkey sausage? The Orzo salad is good. I like the flavor - the sweetness of the cranberries balances the acidity of the vinaigrette, the creamy feta cheese and the capers add a punch of flavor. The orzo makes this a complete dish and heavy enough to be a meal on its own. My only complaint is that some of the greens (kale?) are already wilted and yellow. I want to go back to try the juices.
