The brownie cups are overrated, the frozen brazo fantastic, and the caramel mango cake unmemorable. Great value though.

I've come to expect a lot from any abaca group restaurant. I just had this bread pudding. Wow. Every bit was wonderful. From the ice cream, flecked with real vanilla seeds, to the soft and rich brioche base, with just a touch of strawberry jam swirled in, to the quivering and delicate custard. Yum.

Phat Pho is Phenomenal! And considering it's an abaca group restaurant, the prices are reasonable. P225 for a small bowl of special Pho. (And ok na sa akin yung serving size.)

Marjo's Pochero

I sought this place out because of the rave reviews I read online. It was just ok. The soup was hot and tasty (parang may vetsin or beef cube), and the meat tender. But overall, I found it expensive for what it was, and rather unremarkable. Our nilaga at home and the kansi in Patpat's in Iloilo remain my favorite bulalo dishes, by far. (To be fair though, those benchmarks are exceedingly high.)

Their lechon let me down (big time) last time, but tonight, all is forgiven because of their heartwarming lechon sinigang and creamy strawberry iced candy. Excellent!

From my sister: Terrible service. They forgot the entire table's order, and after 30 minutes, the manager made a stupid lie about the food going to another table. Then, after another wait they only brought ONE dish out and forgot about everything else. (They probably lost the entire order to begin with and couldn't even admit it.) Never coming back.

Matgalne Korean Restaurant

Korean

This small, focused Korean buffet made quite an impression on me, on my very first visit. Samgyupsal buffets are popping up all over the city, and most are so-so to ok. Matgalne is among the lowest-priced, and yet has one of the best Korean buffets I've had, at any price. Everything is fresh, the flavors bright and clear, and the meat superb. Great value, great quality. This is based on one visit though. I hope it's not a fluke, and they keep up the great work.

π Breakfast & Pies

Breakfast

The generally good reviews here sadden me, because it means our awful experience could have been a lot better. This was weeks ago, but it was so bad that I still feel the need to warn people and get the news out there to make sure the restaurant shapes up. Kasi, sayang.

It took 40 minutes for the first order to emerge, and an hour to tell us that some items weren't available. Additional coffee took 20 minutes, despite the fact that the Malongo machine was on the bar beside us. They forgot several items, and the bill was wrong.

That context may have ruined the food for us. The Eggs Benny had overcooked eggs, rubbery bacon, and tough muffins. The sauce would have saved it, but there was just too little of it. The pancakes and waffles had the heavy, chewy texture of dense puto. The pies were just sweet, boring, and looked ugly.

The Spam was good. Because, hello, Spam.

We admittedly had high expectations, based on recommendations, and our generally good experiences with their other restaurants, Pino and Pipino.

To the management and staff: Please shape up. Consistency and service are very important. The concept and general direction are great. The place itself is lovely. It would be a shame if it goes to waste.

Somethin' Fishy

We used to go here for a greasy antidote after a night's drinking. And we kept saying it was 'sulit' to make ourselves feel a little better about stuffing our faces with unhealthy crap.

Well, Triple V took over. They're ok now. At almost the same price for breakfast. That's quite a feat. Still greasy though. And healthy? Asa ka pa.

Oh. The lugaw is very good. (See picture.) And there's a ham carving station and a lot of decent fried meat. (I'm ashamed to post the photo of my plate.)

This breakfast buffet place would be 4 stars in Manila, as it is both cheaper and better than Somethin' Fishy (which, I'm relieved to report, isn't horrible anymore). But in Davao, where good, affordable food is so easy to find, it's just ok. Best parts were the Pinoy ensalada section and lugaw.
