My favorite meal of the day is undoubtedly breakfast. I believe that the first meal of the day is a big factor if you will have a good day or a bad one. I mean who can feel bad after a good breakfast? Because of this, I always make sure to have a good one, be it at home or outside.

Last Tuesday, Oliver and I had brunch at Breakfast and Pies in Malingap. My last visit here is not a good one, when I bought a rather stale bread. Breakfast and Pies come from the same restaurant group that brought Burger Project and Pino/Pipino so it is expected that they serve good food.

I ordered the Caramelized Spam which is served with egg, kimchi, and garlic fried rice with a pesto sauce. I know it’s a super weird combination, but the combination of different flavors produced a very tasty and unique flavor! I guess each one complements the other. Oliver ordered their Huevos Rancheros, from the ingredients, it looks so good: eggs, sausage, bell peppers. Cheese, beans, etc. However there is something with the dish that is not as stellar as their Caramelized Spam. Maybe they should add more spices, a little bit of cayenne or chili would make this dish very good. It’s also a bit of a hassle that their dishes take some time to be served. Our brunch became almost lunch because of waiting time.

I bought a couple of pastel for take out to bring to work. They were soft and fluffy and still good. A few seconds in the microwave and it becomes divine.

Their place is nice, they have a designated smoking area; what pulled it are roaches that we saw. But still a nice place for hangouts and group breakfast.

Their food are totally good but not that superb, that wagyu tapa is 128076. Their pies are also good specially that espresso toffee "nomnom!".

Value for money. Im disappointed with their serving, coz i checked their facebook page and saw the pics and its far from the actual thing.

Tried this place thrice. Liked their caramelized spam. There was nothing remarkable with everything else though. Tapa was a bit too sweet and the kimchi fried rice was the dish's saving grace. Mac&cheese was decent enough, nothing special.

128518 YAY (must-try):

Caramelized spam - comfort food, it was seated and it worked.

🤔 MAY (can try):

Tapa - not a fan of the Kimchi fried rice but the spiciness adds a nice twist to the traditional dish.

Bacon mac n' cheese - nothing special. The bacon didn't stand out.

128530 NAY (avoid):

None to suggest.

FINAL VERDICT: 128528

"Wasn't impressed but would try the other things on the menu. Or go to Pino right beside it instead."

It pains me to submit two stars but I just ordered their "bestseller" sticky buns and it was a disappointment. The bread itself is stale, as if it was made a few days ago already. Because of that old bread texture, I wasnt able to enjoy the cinnamon sticky goodness and the walnuts. 128532

Here for breakfast and it did not disappoint. I had the Ultimate Bacon Rice. It usually comes with scrambled eggs but they were kind enough to accommodate my request and give me sunnyside up eggs instead. Runny yoke. The best. If you recall Chef Laudico's Adobo dish, same concept. There's even a siding like pickled bacon. I skipped that one. The whole thing can serve two or three.

My companion had the lonsilog (vigan longganisa with sinangag and eggs. The longganisa was spicy. A bit more than I expected from the Vigan I'm used to but it was flavorful and I didn't think it needed much else. Again, the single dish can serve two or three. They really have large serving sizes here but I can't say bye same for the coffee. Too bad.

Their signature brewed coffee reminds me of Kenyan coffee, which is a good thing. Liked the experience and we haven't tried the pies yet. Something for next time. It's a bit pricey. The two of us cost around P850 but it's worth the try.

Since I moved to the south due to work, I seldom have the chance to frequent my favorite restaurants in the north. So given the opportunity to bring my girlfriend to the north last weekend, I decided to bring her here. I missed this place already. The last time I was here was in 14 March 2015. I know the exact date because this was where I celebrated Pi Day last year. Their pies were buy one take one on Pi Day, not sure though if they gave the same promo this year.

Every time I visit here, I initially worry about 2 things: parking and available seats. Luckily there was space for both parameters. We were given menus and I was glad to see that it still had my favorite dishes. My girlfriend ordered the Wagyu Beef Sirloin Tapa, which I really wanted to order. Usually, I’d go for diversity, but since my last visit has been over a year ago already, I ordered the same thing. Worth 255 Php, I find the dish affordable and reasonable. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed when it was served to us. First of all, they served my girlfriend first and my dish came 15 minutes after. That puzzled me a bit since it was the same dish so I figured they cooked both at the same time. Secondly, I remember the serving to be larger before. Fortunately, it still tasted the same, if my tongue’s memory serves me well. It was still very tasty and cooked well. For our drinks, we got a carafe of Pino Iced Tea for 125 Php.

For dessert, I let my girlfriend choose. We don’t have the same taste for desserts and so whenever I let her pick a menu item, I almost always get to try something new. There are 9 pies in the menu, and I’ve tasted 5 out of 9. So there’s a 55.56% chance she’ll choose something I’ve tried before. As predicted, she chose something I haven’t tried before: the Butterfinger Pie. I am not a fan of peanut butter and so I knew it would be tough to thoroughly enjoy this selection but I liked it, but only in small doses. After 3 mouthfuls, I found it too sweet already. So it was good until the 3rd bite. My girlfriend, on the other hand, really liked it. I think if you’re a fan of peanut butter, you’ll like it.

Finally, I noticed in their digital sign while eating that they already opened their second branch in Rockwell the Grove. So if you find the Maginhawa branch a bit too far for you, you might find the Grove branch more accessible. I’m really happy to see this particular restaurant start to expand.

That’s it for now. Take good care everyone.

After the Looloo rendezvoos, I decided to visit one of my friends who works with Startek Tiendesitas. The 30-minute catch up was not enough. It was expected since it has been a year since we last saw each other.

I opted to wait for her until 5am and together with another friend who works with Tata BGC, we drove to Maginhawa street for a good old talk and awesome breakfast.

Breakfast and Pies was the plan. Its another restaurant I've been itching to review since it opened three years ago. The place was modest in size but the interior makes up for it. We pulled two tables for the three of us to fit in.

While my two girlfriends are browsing through the menu, I decided to check the pastries and got their ensaymada with keso de bola and spanish bread with dulce de leche. Served warm, both of them were awesome.

I also had a slice of Smack which is a crack pie made from flour, sugar, egg and butter. The crust was made of graham and prolly oat cookies. It's sooo good! Sweet, yummy and really delish. Even the crust was noms! My friends were surprised on how the pie tasted and ordered another slice!128514

For the actual breakfast, we enjoyed the caramelized spam! The sweetness made the spam more interesting to eat. A simple tweak made wonders. I appreciate the smudged pesto on the egg and how the yolk was runny. I would have preferred the rice texture to be mild instead of being a tad dry.

We were already full and made a mistake of ordering chocolate cookie dough pancakes and Banana butella cream waffles. Both were good too so we just decided to have them wrapped for takeout.

Pi is my favorite place for all-day breakfast! I ordered their Eggs Sammy and just ate it all up. I love their hollandaise and their eggs are delicious, releasing that runny yolk over everything. You need to get a bit of everything in every bite to balance out the saltiness of the salmon gravlax, a bit of work but totally worth it.

I also ate their S'mores Pie which exceeded expectations. Some rich chocolate on top of a graham crust and what seems to be a huge marshmallow as the bulk of the pie. The little chocolate chips were the perfect touch to finish the dish.

Service is a bit slow but everything's fresh. The people are really nice. The place was packed for brunch though so go during off-hours.

This fritata took almost an hour to be served. Naubos na ni hubby and offspring yung pagkain nila. Hay! Masarap sana pero ang tagal lang ma-serve ng pagkain.

Hubby ordered corned beef. Beef is tender, medyo sunog lang edge ng eggs.

Offspring ordered cookie dough pancakes, nasuya siya sa lasa, which is unusual because we always make her fave choco chip pancakes in the morning.

Staff is great and friendly. Matagal lang talaga mag-serve ng pagkain. :/

This Nutella Ensaymada is so fluffy and yummy. Hope they could fill it more nutella inside. Hehe. For Php55/pc, it's quite pricey but it's a must-try. 128519128519128519

I have been avoiding rice and saving it for very special dishes that can't be eaten alone. I thought Breakfast and Pie's Tapa with Kimchi rice would be one of those dishes worth "ricing" for but its not. It was ok but not something I would eat again. Good thing it was cheap, otherwise I would've rate the visit as 2 stars. Now I'm hesitant to try the pricier kimchi rice dishes of Wildflour and UCC Clockwork.
