We were headed up north to Santiago Ilocus Sur, but decided that the drive is too long to do straight - that's why we decided to take a detour along La Union.
Being honest to ourselves, we know that we aren't the "party people" types so we just avoided the San Juan Surf Town resorts, since we knew that that's where the young ones will be - we ended up in the this hotel 5 minutes away from San Juan.
Funny enough, the name of the hotel is it's the Awesome Hotel. I was expecting an awesome (1) time, since they are charging a fair bit of premium. (Php6,200 for a night with no breakfast)
We got there a little past lunch, reception was a breeze and our room was already ready. First impressions on the room was that it was humongous, there's actually too much space for 2 folks as it had 2 queen beds, and with the space available - you can actually fit 1 more queen bed. There's a small living area, a desk, smart TV, personal refrigerator, your mini-safe and the luggage rack. The ceiling mounted AC really awesomely (2) the room well given it's size.
You have 2 free water bottles, coffee and tea - mini bar is for a fee. WiFi was spotty but coverage in the area was really quite bad. It just gives you more reasons to enjoy the beach more.
As we expected, it was much more quiet on this side of the beach - with just a few swimmers and surfers on the water. The sunset view was awesome (3) too!
The wife and I decided to just lounge around the beach, dipped for a while in the shallow waters since La Union really does have a strong under-current.
The hotel actually is just 50% done, like what the staff said - the owner decided to just open half the hotel - make sure that half the hotel has all the right amenities done right, and when there's enough funds - finish the construction on the other half. For now, there's only a small pool, parking good for 10 cars (but they have a convention center nearby which can accommodate the rest of the cars) and a fully functional kitchen. Room service is available too!
Staff was knowledgeable, as what's to be expected. We paid for a little premium considering the normal price in La Union but we weren't disappointed with what we experienced. But yes, it's not the hotel you can compare to the likes of Shangri La or Sofitel but considering the location and the neighboring areas - it's awesome (4) enough. (I had fun doing this punny review.)
