Backyard Kitchen and Brew is one of my favourite after-work places at the grove. The menu is both innovative and familiar. Love their drink selection and anything with chicken skin and salted egg.

1. The ambience is good (plus the toilet too)

2. We ordered, Mac & Cheese Nachos & Braised Beef Shortribs with kimchi fried rice & egg with pickled mushroom

3. Drink , we ordered , backyard hand pull coffee

Nachos is good but not fantastic same as well with the beef shortribs, the portion too little for the beef only two thin slices but the rice is alot...128528

Coffee is good, 🙂

Looks sure can be deceiving!

The last time we were at The Grove, my parents and I decided to skip a visit to our favorite Hanamaruken Ramen in favor of trying out this Instagram-famous resto. This is because, the night before, we were admittedly deeeep in the food porn hashtag of Instagram during our kwentuhan session. Backyard piqued our interest because of pictures of its seemingly mouth-watering steak (pictured). Boy, was that a poor move on our part!

Baked Potato Soup - it was alright. Nothing to write home about

Skillet Fries - appetizing to look at but taste is just meh

Thrice Cooked Crispy Pork Cheek - what a fancy name for bagnet :)) It was about 80% fat so I declined to eat more than a sliver but the rice it came with was quite nice

Steak - the exact name has escaped my mind but that's alright because my honest advice is: do not bother!! It's quite pricey but the meat is tough and unseasoned. This might be the most "first world problem" thing I'll ever say but my jaws hurt from all the chewing for the steak! All 3 of us are big steak lovers but just this one instance, we barely managed to make a dent in the meat we were eating before we chose to stop and just take home the rest :V

Kudos on the food presentation and photography na lang! :))

We stayed at Aruga for my mom's birthday and we decided to try some restos at the grove. I found that Backyard kitchen had 4.5 stars on looloo so we went and tried it.

For our lunch we had:

128205Fried chicken salad w/ sriracha lime vinaigrette - I don't know, but we thought that the dressing was too sour. I also couldn't find the chicken.

128205Thrice cooked crispy pork cheek - This is the reason my review for this place got + 1 star. Very tender and juicy pork and really good skin! 128077🏼

128205Slow cooked roasted pork belly - Very tender and juicy meat as well, but the sauce is too sweet. Maybe you can ask them to separate the sauce instead of putting it all on the pork.

128205Meatball linguine - Dissatisfied. Quail eggs that were stuffed inside the meatball were tough, bread on the side was like 1 week old maybe, noodles was overcooked. It would literally melt on your mouth. I wasn't even sure if it was linguine. Lol. All I know for sure that it wasn't al dente.

I read about their bibingka pancake and pizzookie which looks appetizing, but didn't have time to try it. Maybe next time. For now, 3 stars.

Friday night traffic + growling tummies = instant date night with the hubby. He let me pick the restaurant and the food so I went straight for their specialties.

On the table
🔹Slow Roasted Pork Belly with Rice - very tender and flavorful chunks of meat. The thick sauce was sweet, spicy and smokey which made me think of beans. I didn't taste the rhum coke though. The purple side salad was crunchy and complemented the strong flavors of the pork belly.. We were surprised that the salad was made of red cabbage and papaya. The rice was fragrant and the kind of buhaghag that would be perfect for Sinangag.
🔹Backyard Burger - fat, juicy flavorful burger patty crowned with cheese, veggies and a tangy catsup. The bread was soft and buttery. We had to use a fork and knife to eat the huge thing. The cheesy potato chips were so good that they disappeared right away.
🔹Pizzookie - a thick chocolate chip cookie served in a skillet. The parts that did not have any chocolate were plain boring, not even sweet. Those parts with melted chocolate were just heavenly especially when eaten with the ice cream. The cookie wasn't that sweet. The Mantecado ice cream brought me childhood memories of the time we'd buy those golden gallons. Be prepared to wait as they cook this as you order. It took around 20 minutes but they informed us about the waiting time when we placed our order. Yup I actually timed it haha. Although most of the cookie was good, i still prefer the Cookie Skillet of Tony Roma's. I like my cookies both crunchy and chewy.
🔹Salted Egg Chicken Skin - an after thought. Well more of something to munch while waiting for dessert. And i guess staring at their slideshow of food that kept playing over and over brainwashed us haha. The chicken skin was very crunchy but we couldn't taste the salted egg. All i could think of was powdery breading. Although this was served with vinegar, we tried it with catsup too which I appreciated more. And yes we couldn't resist ordering a cup of rice hahaha. The portion was big and best shared. Nakakasawa siya. But at least it wasn't oily.

Thank you to Friday night traffic, we discovered this chill place. I can see myself hanging out here and enjoying a drink or two or having a meal with family or friends..

*appreciated that the server mentioned their Visa credit card promo, 10% off, no minimum
**basement and street parking available, free parking since we had the ticket validated

I've eaten here probably three times already and none of the dishes ever stood out for me. They were all generally bland for my taste and nothing special despite having an appetizing selection of dishes on the menu. I wasn't very thrilled to be having brunch here again but no other restaurant was open. I know I said the dishes I tried here aren't at all 5 stars but this bibingka pancake makes up for it. In fact, it far outweighs them.128518 SO good. It's brilliant. Bibingka lovers will definitely not be disappointed--they may even be surprised.9786128076🏻

I still remember the first time I visited Backyard. We only ordered its famous butter beer since we saving space for our Mecha Uma tasting menu dinner. And since there are just too many new restaurants here and there, I didn't get to visit Backyard again till last week. Well, we didn't really plan to visit Backyard but since we failed (once again) to have lunch at Asakusa, we ended up stuck between Backyard and Burger Pub. Thinking that I just recently blogged about the latter, I convinced R that we go for Chef Ed Bugia's restaurant.

Hello, Backyard Kitchen + Brew!

This time around, we ordered non-alcoholic drinks Lemonade (PHP65) and Home Brewed Iced Tea (PHP85). For our hot meals, we went for Slow Roasted Pork Belly (PHP275) and Backyard Burger (PHP285).

First served were our drinks and both were very refreshing. The lemonade was delightfully tangy while the iced tea had a nice citrusy flavor with a tinge of honey. Yum!

In less than 10 minutes, the Slow Roasted Pork Belly was served. Now, that's fast service!

As one of Backyard's specialties or recommended dishes, it did not fail in the taste department. I truly enjoyed the rich flavor of the pork belly. Succulent meat covered in a sweet and mildly spicy sauce.

In order to offset its overwhelming taste, I ate some of the crunchy and slightly tarty coleslaw and delightfully cheesy mac and cheese after each bite of the pork belly. It was a harmonious dance of flavors! And the good thing about this affordable dish was its generous serving size!

Speaking of sharing, the Backyard burger is also good for sharing. The mere sight of the thick patty made me gulp and think if we could finish it.

We started with the potato chips drizzled with cheese powder. (To be honest, that was the reason why we ordered it.) The potato chips were slightly chewy so after much thought, it might actually be cassava and not potato chips.

As for the burger, I was expecting it to be really good as Chef Ed Bugia's The Burger Project which made me fall in love at first bite. Sadly, I could not say the same with this one. Though the patty was juicy and flavorful, it had a lot of chewy or tough bits of meat making the whole eating experience less enjoyable.

Overall, it was still a good dining experience. I loved my Slow Roasted Pork Belly and I would love to order it again. And perhaps with a Pizzookie!

Beef Short Ribs --> not too good

Waffle Breaded Chicken with Bone Marrow Ciabatta --> once you've tasted kettle's buttermilk southern fried chicken, the expectations are greater.. So-so chicken..

Salted Egg Chicken Skin --> good stuff especially with sriracha sauce and mayo!

Should've ordered the pork belly with mac & cheese.. The four cheese flat bread was pretty good too..

Place they have here is just ok alright for me nothing striking just your average common place dining spot. This is their second branch after the UP Town Center. I haven't had the chance to dine in that branch, but here yeah my first time to try Backyard, and it was a nice dining experience because of the good food we had. 128522

The servers were nice and fast, just like the flies hovering inside. They should do something about those flies. 128527

The food was great for me. This didn't surprise me because the Backyard has good pedigree from the likes of Breakfast and Pi, BRGR by chef Bugia.

I love tapa so alam na this, I got one for myself. Bordering on the sweet side though, it was tapsilog all the way and I wiped it off the plate. 128513

The slow roasted belly is a wipe your plate clean food too. Very good tender and flavorful!

Now the bibingka pancakes was for our dessert. Was curious about the name. I liked it very much too, it's like, a bibingka in a pancake form very nice. 128513

Much more dishes to try out here. Going to visit their Circuit Makati branch soon.

This is actually my 2nd time to dine in Backyard, the first was in UP town centre, this time in the Grove retail row.

The constant order would be the salted egg battered chicken skin! This is actually so deadly but it's so good! But I guess it was about time sometime made this out of chicken skin.

The other order was the pork barbeque and that was cooked well too!
