You live in Ortigas and looking for a nightcap together with friends or family beside a mall? Barcino could be a great spot for you to hang out. Aside from serving excellent tapas, this Spanish restaurant also offers a wide selection of wine to their dining customers.

Barcino started out as a quaint deli bar in Ortigas back in 2004. It was coined “Barcino Gourmet” after the Latin name of the Catalan capital, Barcelona. What started out as a small bar selling Spanish deli, sundried cheeses, and some fine wines, has eventually grown in multiple locations in the Metro.

I was invited to visit Barcino on its opening at the 30th Mall in Ugong, Pasig months back. Back then after the ceremonial ribbon cutting, we were given authentic taste of Spain through their best menu offerings. We were also treated to a live performance of flamenco dancing.

For starters, we got to try their Jamon Bodega or Iberico ham, and a couple of cheese varieties, with complimentary toasted bread in olive oil. It was the Jamon that certainly got my attention. This dry-cured ham was from the Iberian native pig of Spain. It is considered the finest ham in the world, seasoned in fine salt and cured for three years! It had a sweet, nutty, and not as salty. The meat was alsl well marbled, having a deep shade of red and a complex meaty flavor to it.

Then, there’s their cold soups – the Salmorejo and Ajo Blanco Malagueno. The Salmorejo (Php305) is a hearty serving of Spanish soup served cold, with tomatoes, and garlic, garnished with Serrano ham and grated boiled egg. It was thick and creamy, but I still do think that it would have been better if this was served warm.

Their Ajo Blanco Malagueno (Php 295), on the other hand, is cold soup with garlic, almonds, and grapes from the city of Málaga, Spain. Just like the Salmorejo, it is also served together with a slice of bread. This one is also an ingenious creation that was made fresh right off their kitchen. It was creamy, refreshing, and a great way to start off a lovely dinner.

We also had a taste of their paellas – their Paella Negra (Php 580) and Paella Mixta con Jamon Serrano (Php 860). The former was made up of paella rice immersed in squid ink and its sea flavor. It has mixed seafoods, meat and veggies in it, topped with squid rings and drizzled with garlic sauce or aioli. The latter was even more flavorful, thanks to its Jamon Serrano pieces spread all over.

I also got to indulge on their Montaditos Jamon Serrano Y Quezo Manchego (Php 570). This is sliced bread topped with Serrano ham and Manchego cheese. More tasty ham this time with sweet and lingering taste of melted milk cheese.

Of course my food journey to Spain wouldn’t be complete without a glass of Sangria. It has the perfect blend of fruit and alcohol in it, and it wasn’t too sweet nor strong either. It’s the perfect drink to wash down all that food I had for dinner.

So if you are feeling fancy and in the mood for some drinks, then hit off Barcino in your best clothes and take a trip to Spain right here at their newest branch at the Ayala the 30th. Buen apetito!

Got a treat from my bf, he ordered for me. He bought churros, it was freshly cooked and the chocolate sauce was just perfect.

I love their sangria! Paired with good Spanish food and great conversation, this is the type of place you'd want to spend your Friday night with friends.

My friend had one of those days you just want to drink wine and vent. Since, I'm always game for any hangout session. I accompanied her and ordered a few bottles.

It's been years since I last went here and they renovated the place a bit. She ordered Chorizo & Cheese Platter (Php1690) and some slices of meat (which I can't remember what it's called.) For wine, we ordered the cheapest on the menu knowing we'll order 2 bottles.

They offer one free toilet use, cause normally you need to pay Php10 to use the toilet. This part here has always been a ripoff.

I'm not really a wine person but for a few of my friends' despedida, they decided to have drinks at Barcino. It wasn't really my first time to drink wine, but it was quite challenging and interesting.

Challenging because I had no clue what the difference of dry wine to others... I am clueless 128514 So I let them decide.

Interesting because the 6 of us shared 3 different bottles of wine and they all had their distinct taste and flavor. I need to be educated!! 128565

The service here is really great. They really give you great recommendations and if you don't like the bottle of wine they recommended, it won't be charged to you! They'll be the ones paying for it. 128561

I was eyeing the jambalaya from the table beside us but since we already had dinner at Frankie's before dropping by, we only had the cheese platter, some bread with tomatoes and olive oil and towards the end, I was craving for something hot, so we ordered a soup. 128514 Their menu items were in Spanish names so I forgot what it was called but it was the garlicky soup with cured meat. 128514 I REALLY LIKED IT!! 128525

So far the best Paella Negra in town. It is best paired with their chorizo, and of course, wine! An order is already good for 3 persons.

Gulas al Ajillo. That's baby eel sauteed in garlic, chillies and olive oil. This is my favorite dish here in Barcino. If you are famished order a paella-i like the paella de gallina y cerdo. Order a bottle of tempranillo. If you get confused by the enormous number of wine available ask the waiting staff. They are very helpful.

My only complaint is that they removed from the menu Costilla de Adan which is prok rib cooked a la humba. Great to pair with red wine.

I also like the Julia Vargas branch because it has character. I was told once that this resto started a a wine importing endeavor abd as the owners hold wine tasting sessions with some food it developed into an amazing place.

You will also love the Spanish names of the waiting staff--Thalia, Rodrigo, Jose--straight of out Latin telenovelas. This place is great for after work unwinding.

It's the end of the first day of work this 2015 and we planned to just chill. Already had our dinner at Tom Sawyer's so we just had a bottle of wine and Chistorra. The chistorra was really good, so addicting, can't stop munching. 128521

It cozy and had a pleasant ambience. Seated inside their non-smoking area.

Good place to unwind & chill after work.

Been here after a loong time. I thought this branch is already closed :) but anyway, still very reliable for casual wine get together. And they extended the tables outside so it can accommodate more diners.

0/10 would not eat here again. It's expensive and the food sucks. All of it. ESPECIALLY the bread and that atrocious tomato spread. I guess the place specializes in wines because you have to be drunk to stand the food.

After pigging out in Hai Chix, we decided we still wanted wine. But the wine there was a little pricey so we moved to Barcino in City Golf and had another bottle and got some cheese (glorious cheese omg).

Barcino is still my reliable wine stop for chill alcoholic sessions. 128077

An office mate and I wanted to unwind and didn't want to go home yet so We both ended up in Barcino for an impromptu wine and cheese night. 127863127863

We got the barsao Spanish white wine. It was a little Puckery for the first 2 sips then it becomes smooth and light after... I think masarap because we ended up drinking 1 wine bottle each 128561128517

We paired it with manchego cheese and imbreto (I hope I spelled that correctly) which both paired well with the wine because they were a little savory and salty - perfect for the white wine's profile and texture. 128523

Cheers to more spontaneous ranting and unwinding sessions. 128077128077128077

I wonder if they removed the Fideuà from the menu or if only Barcino BGC offers the dish.

Anyway last night we got the cheese and chorizo platter instead, and it was good. The real reason why I'm writing this post is because I was so happy with the waiter's wine recommendation. It was Solluna Prioritat 2008.

The staff was really accommodating and pleasant (been to Barcino Rockwell recently and the waitresses there weren't as attentive). Quite pleased with this visit.

If you're tired of the usual local brew / sugary cocktails by the pitcher and looking for a nice place to drink and unwind then Barcino is the place.

They take pride on their theme of being a wine bar / tavern. They commit to this by offering authentic tapas as well as spanish dishes.

For the best experience consult their knowledgeable staff about which wine would best go with the items you want to dine on or what taste (fruity, sweet, bold, etc.) are you in the mood for.

The place was nice and cozy, and not at all intimidating. It's perfect for friends catching up or if you just want to have a pretentious night out with crazy friends (like us). 128540
Food was good and the wine selection was wide enough. It's a little bit on the expensive side, though (especially for students like us.hehe). What I didn't like about this place is the lack of the service people's knowledge of their products and their lack of PR with customers...sooo minus one star for that. ;)

You can never go wrong with Barcino. Good food, a good selection of wine... That's pretty much all you need for a great night with friends.

Our usuals include: a crisp Valformosa Claudia to start the night, followed by our favorite tapas which include croquettas, chorizos and manchego, followed by a tasty Paella Negra paired with our favorite, an Altozano Tempranillo. Our hearty Spanish meal is nicely ended with a rich Churros con chocolate. Yum!

Enjoy a few bottles of the Claudia or the Vallformosa with friends - perfect whites for tropical climes and keeping the tab in check. Round it up with the Gourmet Tapas plate which packs all the favorites including a nice and tangy potato salad.
