Right before boarding, I was surprised to see the tiniest Philippine Airlines plane. It even had propellers! 128561 To be honest, I was afraid we wouldn’t reach our destination. But of course, that’s just me being pessimistic 128517

I wondered why they used such a small plane. Is it because only very few people visit Batanes? Or is it just a coincidence that they had few passengers for this flight? But the answer was not due to the questions asked. Since Batanes is such a small province, its airport is also small. They have a very limited runway wherein the plane has to stop abruptly as soon as its wheels hit the ground. PAL’s airplane design is not suitable to the short runway of Basco Airport which is why it has to land head on. But no worries! Because the PAL has some of the best pilots in the world. 128077🏻 I judge the pilot’s skills during its take off and landing activities and believe me when I say that I’m not biased. Whether it be compared to other local airlines or foreign ones, PAL pilots are more than competent in their jobs. But being punctual is another story 🤔

Anyway, the Basco Airport is very small since there are minimal flights to and from here. The terminal was undergoing construction during our time here. It’s really just a place to get in and out of the province. I do like how their terminal is made of stone walls. These make it sturdy and enable it to battle the strong typhoons that frequent here.

Warning: Do note that phone signal and wifi in Batanes are very weak. But that's fine since you're not supposed to be on your phone when you travel 9996🏻️ Also, visit during summer time since it can be quite dangerous during rainy season.

Fun fact: Yes, it’s true that airfare to Batanes is very expensive since it is far and few visit the place. But! I heard that seat sales are not hopeless. Although it’s very rare, there were several occasions in the past that PAL offered seat sales to Batanes. Just be sure to book early and always be alert. Good luck! 🤗

Very small airport and runway too but matches the simple life this place holds. And yeah, sorry for the photo but I had no stock here in my camera. Just w/my trusty dslr. Hihihi. 9992

That photo was taken days ago. Thursday to be exact. Couldn't do an instant looloo review due to lack of internet access. So yeah, no social media for 4 days but I could care less about that. I was planning to separate myself from all that. The so-called Social Media Diet. It helped. Made me and my buddies appreciate the beauty that surrounded us then. Time went by slowly but every second of every amazing view was well worth it. And yes, I would save all over again to experience this.

And oh, once we stepped outside of that plane, fresh air greeted us. Hello detox for our lungs! 128077🏻

I was pleasantly surprised by this airport, as it was simple but picturesque. Its look complements the surrounding environs. The bathrooms were clean. Seats were limited; then again they only have a few flights per week and the planes that fly in and out are pretty small as well.

Check-in was done manually but we didn't wait long. I suppose they have the process down pat, everything seemed efficient.

There aren't really any food options inside, you'll have to go outside the airport for that.

The airport was tiny and there weren't really counters and the airlines did manual check-in (seryoso, walang computers dito) but this has got to be the prettiest and comfiest airports in the Philippines!

They only operate on MWF and only a few airlines go here. Highly recommend PAL because they don't cancel flights as much as sky jet.

Surprisingly this is a pretty good airport. Considering its not a super hot destination, and just a province airport. Walking in you get a real sense of an island vibe with the open air design.

Both arrival and departure were smooth. No hassle on either end. Which is a lot more than I can say for any NAIA terminal. 128517

Just some advice:

1. Book transportation ahead of time. I didn't see many trikes around the area on first arrival. Although it's within walking distance of the city, so even if you do forget it's not a huge deal.
2. On departure, there's actually a pre-departure waiting area. It's different than the seats there when you arrive. I made the mistake of sitting in the wrong area. 128517 Better signage would be nice, or just a less air headed passenger.
3. Do NOT try to fly SkyJet Airlines. You will get ripped off. My initial flight was with them but three days prior to my trip they canceled it. They keep canceling a lot of people's trips, based on conversations I've had with tour guides in Basco. They've not renewed their license to fly in a long time. So even if they do sell you a ticket, don't risk it. Just fly PAL Express.

Dios mamajes, Batanes!

Love not only the airport but the staffs too.
The place is relatively small compared to other airports but way better. Air-conditioned, nice & clean powder/comfort rooms, and the design is so homey.
Manual check in and baggage check but everything went well. Very accommodating airport personnels.
Very relaxing ambiance and hayahay (haha).

I like the aesthetics of Basco Airport. It is relatively small compared to other airports in the country. There are only 6 flights (both inbound and outbound) during MWF - 1 SkyJet and 2 PALex and flights are only in the morning. Other days, only 4 and by PALex. All morning flights.

You can't see any computers at the check-in counter as they do it manually. Same goes with the baggage check counter. But not to worry since their pre-departure area is airconditioned but there are only limited seats. If your lodging place is near the airport, you can check-in early, go back to your lodging place and come back once you hear the roaring sound of the plane.

No shops inside the airport. There are stalls outside though - souvenir shops, ticketing stalls, tour operators, etc.

Since there are no afternoon flights, you can ask permission from the airport personnel and ride a bike in the runway and catch the sunset there.
