Watching series like The Pacific and Band of Brothers makes me remember my trip to Battery Hearn in Corregidor. It was a short trip packed with information and stories.

As our first stop in our Corregidor Island trip, most tourists were eager to take photos of the place instead of listening to our tour guide. I wanted a few snapshots too but since the place was packed with families, couples and selfie sticks, R and I decided to listen to the guide.

The Battery Hearn, which was formally known as Smith No. 2 in honor of the Smith Brothers, was armed with four 12-inch mortars on a 360 degree rotating platform. It was known to fire a 454.5 kilogram shell to a range of 27 kilometers. Just imagine its power and the potential damage it could cause! To better illustrate, our guide mentioned that a shell, assuming that the long gun is in Manila, could reach Bacoor, Cavite. 128563

But they failed to take into account one thing... its 35 degree firing elevation leaving the mortar with very flat trajectory. In short, it became a useless tool during the war and it was captured intact by the conquerors and even used it to symbolize their victory over Corregidor.

Anyway, back to the present...

Do not miss a photo op with the major artilleries and check the cartridge room. It was a bit spooky though when I went in. 128534
