I kept seeing the sign for Botan while walking along Urban Ave, but couldn't see where the entrance was so I ignored it for weeks even if it was just literally across the street. I thought it was located somewhere up in the building.

Then a friend mentioned it to me so I checked it out. So it's actually located at the basement, and there's a flight of stairs leading down to it. When we entered, I was thrilled to see that it was much, much better than what I expected.

It was like a hidden bistro in Makati, the decor was charming yet chic. There's a bookcase with magazines and a wall with romantic decals. The menu even folded like a newspaper.

The extensive menu was a mix of Chinese, Taiwanese, Filipino, Thai and other Asian dishes. Price range is from P150-250 for the main dish. They also have milk teas, etc...

We ordered the Crispy Chicken Chop Rice (P220), the Thai Minced Pork Rice (P220) and the Mushroom Meatball Soup (P100).

The Thai Minced Pork Rice was nice, the Mushroom Meatball Soup was okay. They met expectations, no complaints.

The Crispy Chicken Chop Rice was supposed to be one of their bestsellers. The breading was crispy and flavorful, and the chicken meat was not dry. However, the flavor was all on the breading and I thought that the chicken itself was not seasoned. Also, I had hoped that they would include some kind of sauce like a gravy or a dip. While eating the chicken chop with the rice, I felt that something was missing, and I was looking for a sauce, any sauce. All they had was catsup and soy sauce :(

I would go back again but I would probably order another dish. Price-wise, it is reasonable. The portions are big and they use good quality rice.

I gave it a high score of 4 despite the Chicken Chop Rice because I really like the interior design and the ambience it evokes!

Last Friday, I was dressed to eat and eat a lot. You can ask Julie J. and Carla M. because I had lunch with them. Thing is, my plans got cancelled very early in the morning and I didn't want to change outfit anymore. It's a good thing, another co-worker asked me out to eat! Yaaaaay! Friday night's purpose was going to be fulfilled!

Bo Tan was our second stop for the evening. We both were not interested in Milk Tea but the menu looked inviting. This joint is found in a Basement where you might think is just your run of the mill type of Milk tea place - it's not. When you enter, the furniture and design is clean and inviting. The lamps are interesting and shaped like a coconut Ferrero, while a curio wall is on the right side with Taiwan knickknacks displayed are also sold (at quite the price, though.)

The place wasn't packed but there were four tables that were occupied. We were given menus and it's a medium-sized one that folds out and expands. Their milk tea is sold in two sizes - like it and love it, and I loved the idea of it. It was quirky! They offered a wide range of Taiwanese food, from fried tofu and fried blood (DUGO!!!!) for appetizers, to Sandwishes (I kid you not!) and noodles that come in these kickass huge bowls! There are alos other main dishes with rice but I wasn't able to focus on that. I took a look at their desserts instead since we already had dinner.

The waffles were very interesting. Listed on their menu are the original waffles with honey, A tune waffle as a savory flavor, a red bean matcha one for authenticity and the seasoned fruits waffle which was their best-seller. I selected nothing BUT the waiter asked me to try out their new waffle which is a chocolate banana one (seen in photo) for P220. OK. So it takes a while to serve but that was fine because we were extremely full. We end up looking at the Taiwanese magazines in the well-lit shelf behind us and start talking about the people on the cover. When this dessert got served, it was huge and gooooood! The banana was sweet and fresh, the whipped cream was perfection - it obviously wasn't those canned ones because it tasted rich and creamy and it didn't melt right away. The chocolate drizzle looked too much but i think it was just right given that the waffle was thick - crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. I loved it. My friend said she liked her waffles crisper but the flavor was good.

We each had some tea, mine the pearl milk tea and hers a wintermelon tea, both in like it sizes. She found the wintermelon too sweet so she mixed it with some water. I found the pearl milk tea not too sweet but it offset the flavor with the waffle.

Am definitely coming back even if I have to walk it. Considering this as a dinner option because the prices aren't bad. The people that dine here look very Taiwanese-y/Chinese/Asian so I'm guessing the flavor is good and maybe a little authentic. I'm sure nothing will beat the street food in Taiwan pa rin. I didn't expect it to be packed when we left given that it's located in a basement. There seems to be a market for them because a Taiwanese grocery just opened across, too.

Your underground noodle slash bubble milk tea place! Flat white walls with matte black stickers and a somewhat dimmy vibe - ahhh, it was a lovely late afternoon for noodles!

anything soupy and tasty would definitely make me happy, especially if it's beef wanton noodle soup or ramen!

Their Hk beef noodle soup (did not have wanton) but the beef chunks were so soft, bursting with flavor and NOT GUMMY! beefO'heaven 128525 &&I love how spicy it was that I didnt have to request for chili oil / flakes. 128514 The broth was light, and was perfect to match their firm, thick lomi-ish noodles. All in one red bowl 128516

Would have tried their mixed fruit tea but we were so full already! Next tiiiime

Looloove,
B

Bo Tan Bubble Tea and Cafe can be found in the basement of West of Ayala building, that alone is a bait for the curious. You wonder what you would find below, before you knew it you’re already making the descent. That’s what happened with me and my friend few days ago when we passed by the area.

It was a delightful discovery. The place is cute, the wooden floor by the entrance reminiscent of a spa, there are red chairs and white tables, a bar that circled the corner of the room, and a bookshelf on the wall. I expected a small place and found instead an ample space.

The Taiwanese-owned cafe can be found along Urban Ave. in Makati (might explain why most of the patrons are Chinese). They serve sandwich, milktea, coffee, noodles, and rice meals. Among the food and drinks that I tried are the following:

Minced Adobe Noodle Soup (PHP150) is my absolute favorite. The noodles are thick and just as the name implies, it has minced pork adobo topping.

The Triple Delight Milktea (PHP100) has three ingredients: nata de coco, pudding, and tapioca. It’s good if you don’t mind drinking something that also involves eating, if you know what I mean.

In my opinion, the Red Bean Milktea (PHP100) tastes better, but maybe I am being partial because I love red beans. It is sweet and smooth and the tea flavor is subdued by the red beans. I just love it.

The Coffee Latte (PHP120) is served in a unique looking cup on a little ceramic tray. For this alone I already find it interesting. There is nothing notable about the taste though, meaning it’s just your regular latte, foamy, milky, sweet, and not too bitter.

I spotted this transparent teapot on another table that has pieces of assorted fruits. It got me curious that I just had to try it. It’s called Hot Fresh Fruits Tea, also available in cold but I recommend you go for the hot version because the presentation is more dramatic. I will go as far as saying that this is the best tasting tea I’ve ever had in my life, probably has to do with the fact that it is filled with those fruits. A shot of honey is provided but even without adding it, the tea already tastes good.

But the most interesting thing about this experience, is the Coffee Ole (PHP140). It’s presented on a rectangular wooden tray, the coffee, syrup, and milk served separately. The glass filled with ice looks just like a fish bowl. You get to prepare the drink yourself.

It’s a charming place with a cute bathroom and a fast, free WiFi connection. Who would have thought there is a wonderful place such as this down that basement.

Went here after Art In The Park. 128513 Since it was raining so hard yesterday, all of us ordered noodles to warm our tummies.

I got the chicken chop noodles. The noodles + soup were okay -- kinda bland. The chicken needed a little juice and spice too. It was my first time trying their noodles and it wasn't that astounding. I still prefer their rice meals.

Also, their teas are still 100841008410084

...and after Banapple, we went to probably one of my favorite tea places which I haven't visited in a while. 128513

Besides the very affordable tea (our large ice cream and green teas cost only P100, minus the sinkers), I love the ambiance of the place AND the fact that it's in a basement. Cool, right? 128525

They also have rice meals. 128077

We were very hungry so we ordered meal sets at this cute milk tea place. And then we were too full to order mill tea. Hay ang labo.

Anyway, Botan is a cute but kinda secret place to hang out with friends. Most of the diners look like residents of the building. And most of them are Taiwanese so I guess they serve the real (or close to the real) thing here.

Rice meals are heavy and affordable :-) We tried kung pao chicken and 3 cups chicken and both are good. They come with free vegetable side dish. Yum! Then the not-so-good orders. The minced adobo is far from the minced taiwanese pork. It actually tasted more like minced bland adobo (sorry). Then we tried the porkchop noodles. The pork chop was flavored with pepper salt and was good but the noodle soup just tasted like burnt onion. Well, now we know what not to order next time.

Will definitely go back to try the milk teas :-)
