Brera Delicatessen first caught my interest one evening when I was walking by and saw them through their window, grilling big fat steaks on a charcoal grill. Definitely something to try out one of these days. Lately, I've been having such excellent results cooking my own steaks that our family is rarely impressed by steak places, but I still had high hopes - now I can maybe see if the hope was justified.
Coming into the deli, I find that it's also an imported meat/cheese/etc shop, like Santi's with a resto area. Unfortunately, I just needed to pass the time while I was in the area, and just had a late breakfast, so I was not looking for a big meal. The steaks were all rather large, so I just ordered the wagyu burger with cheddar, and my standard Coke Zero.
While waiting, I got to appreciate the offerings in more detail. The steaks are reasonably priced for a steak place (though it's still a lot more reasonable -and tasty- to cook your own, given good ingredients.) the real Iberico hams in display had black hooves, which I hear is a mark of good quality. About 30-40 different types of cheese too. Then my food arrives and I can evaluate my burger, which comes with European-style fries (chips) and a side-salad (of sorts).
Burger - 🏽. Ok, but not spectacular. Patty was of a good size and tasty, the condiments were fresh, but I did have my complaints: Anthony Bourdain once complained that too few restaurants allow you to order burgers medium rare, and this burger reiterated to me that many places don't really know how to cook a burger medium rare. In addition, the bun really lets everything down, toasted on the inside but cold on the outside, but was a bit undersized, and just disintegrated from the juices of the burger. I'm of the school that burgers are meant to be eaten with your hands, and this wasn't one of those. Overall, okay in taste, but messy to eat, and other places nearby make great burgers, at cheaper price points.
Chips - 🏽. Thick, crisp outside, but still soft (but a bit starchy) on the inside. They're okay chips.
"Side-salad" - 🙁. Chopped up cabbage and carrots swimming in dressing. Frankly: lazy. Would have been just a bit harder, but much better to keep the veg separate from the dreassing, to be combined just before serving.
Overall, kinda my hopes were not really met, but they were set high at the outset. Okay for it's demographic, I guess; but my mean steak at home doesn't paint this place a good image. I may still come back to try their steak one of these days, but I might just make it better at home. ️️️/5
