Binondo's Chinatown Food Crawl.

First stop: Cafe Mezzanine

Featured in CNN Go's Worlds Best Chinatown List. Binondo's must-visit restaurant Cafe Mezzanine: The Fireman's Coffee Shop is located at the Second Floor of Eng Bee Tin and Chuan Kee, Ongpin St., Binondo, Manila.

It is almost lunch time when I entered Cafe Mezzanine and I was greeted by their lovely staff Joy. The restaurant is almost half-full by that time, most of the customers were Chinese. She assisted me in my table and handed the menu and suggested the must try dish Soup No. 5, which I did not order knowing that one of the main ingredients of the soup is the bull's testicles... Gosh!!! 128540 127926No... No... No... No way127926 hahaha! 128514

I got Asado with Adobo Egg for Php130.00 and Kiampong (Chinese Fried Rice with Peanuts) for Php60.00. After less than 5 minutes my food arrived. That was quite fast. 128077🏼

Asado with Adobo Egg - 11088110881108811088️ 4/5

Kiampong - 1108811088110881108811088️ 5/5

And I was surprised when Joy told me that all the revenues from their restaurant Cafe Mezzanine is donated to Binondo Paco Fire Search and Rescue Brigade, no wonder it's called The Fireman's Coffee Shop.

It's a restaurant at the 2nd floor of Eng Bee Tin. This became our first stop from the Binondo Food Crawl that we had last week. It was an accidental stop since we waited for the heavy downpour to pass before we proceed to Lucky Chinatown.

Lark C, Ruth D and I ordered the ff

1.) Fishball Soup - a good starter especially on a rainy day. Tastes like the fish/halibut soup that I had from Tuan tuan before.

2.) Xiao Long Bao - is also good for sharing since it has 10 pieces. The wrapper is thick and I didn't quite feel the soup inside.

3.) Shrimp Hakaw - it has 4 pieces, i think there are 2 or 3 small shrimps inside. The wrapper is also thick

Apart from a full tummy, we also feel good that somehow we have donated a portion of what we paid for to the Binondo Fire Volunteers.

First stop of our Chinatown trip yesterday was at Café Mezzanine. We did not actually plan to eat here but after buying pasalubong from Eng Bee Tin, there was heavy rainfall. So we decided to stay for a while and eat something light. We had Xiao Long Bao, Fish Ball Soup, and Hakaw. I forgot to ask how many pieces their XLB was so we were surprised to see that an order had 10 pieces. 128563 They’re not the best I’ve had but for the price, it was fine. Soup was okay. I wasn’t able to try the hakaw.

Fun fact: A part of Café Mezzanine’s income goes to the Binondo Fire Department and volunteer firefighters of Manila.

I like the atmosphere of the place. It's pretty cool and has a cozy feel. We didnt expect the xiao long bao to have that many servings. Haha! But overall we had a noce experience considering me and my friend doesnt eat much chinese food. TRY THE HAKAW AND KIAMPONG RICE ITS GOOD. Just a warning the wintermelon juice is too sweet so if you're not too keen on sweet stuff avoid ordering it. Pork machang also taste a bit like the kakaning biko hahah #50ksummergiveaway

Exotic! That’s the first thing that comes to mind whenever I hear the word Binondo. Yes, not Chinese nor hopia… EXOTIC. I find it funny that it was just this year when I first visited this place, and now, I just can’t get over it. Soup #5, Turtle Soup, Frogs, Eels… these things charm me in a very odd manner.

Fear Factor: Exotic Food Trip Edition.

I invited several friends from Couchsurfing to a different kind Binondo Food Trip. Unfortunately, I was not aware that the word “exotic” could turn them off like The Grinch seducing the mommy who kissed Santa Claus. Alas, I was able to gather 7 people with the help of a fellow CSer.

Our first stop was Café Mezzanine known as the Volunteer Fireman’s Coffee Shop. There we ordered Soup #5 (PHP250) and Special Kiampong (PHP50 per serving). I also ordered Coffee Float (PHP90).

I was so excited to try Soup #5 because... Bull’s balls? How can that not be exotic? Fine, maybe not as much as cheese with maggots.

Odd. It tasted like nilagang baka. The broth reminded me of my ultimate favorite Filipino dish. The meat however was very soft and effortless to chew. I was told though that they did not use balls but cartilage instead. :| So, does that mean I was not eating something exotic?

The Special Kiampong on the other hand was something I really enjoyed. I first tried it a week before when I got a free pass to the Big Binondo Food Wok of Ivan Man Dy.

The Kiampong, a Chinese fried rice, had bits of pork, chives, and nuts. It was a bowl of different textures yet they all went really well together. There was the moist rice, chewy bits of pork, and the crunch of chives and nuts. I also love how the sweetness of the nuts made the fried rice more interesting. But the oddest thing for me was that it went well with Soup #5. Usually, fried rice and soup do not go well together. But this one is an exemption.

As for my drink, the coffee taste was definitely there and it was quite a refreshing beverage. I drank it though with an empty stomach (it was served before the food) and it made my tummy ache. But, it was still delightful and I want more!

I will definitely go back for more of that kiampong and perhaps a hopia food trip on the side.

1. It was my first time in Binondo where my guy friend took me there for a short discovery of the place. We both love to explore the old side of Manila (it is still an old city). When we got hungry we decided to eat at Cafe Mezzanine, which I think is the most sophisticated "turo-turo" for me!

2. Place was full with diners, so we waited a bit long for our orders. But it was worth it. I loooooooved the braised beef! It was ultra-soft and tender, and it was flavorful. One regret is that I didn't order an extra rice, I wish I did. My guy friend also let me taste his dumpling noodle soup, and it was also good! The green tea milk tea had a nice, flowery aftertaste, maybe because of the honey. The best green tea milk tea I've tasted so far.

3. Since the owner of Cafe Mezzanine is also the owner of Eng Bee Tin, there's of course the Eng Bee Tin shop next to the restaurant. Bought some of their hopia and mochi. All were good, but my most favorite is the custard hopia, it was really yummy. I'm curious and excited to try other hopia flavors! It is worth another visit.

Since we wanted maki for dinner, my friend suggested and brought me to Cafe Mezzanine. It wasn't my first time here. My dad used to bring me here when I was younger.

The restaurant has an open area which doesn't have an aircon and the foods were cheaper which is located at the ground floor; while another area with aircon at the 2nd floor. Foods at the 2nd floor were more expensive due to the air conditioning and they have a separate menu being offered from the ground floor. Although mostly are similar.

We ordered the beef maki soup, which has a lot of meat but lesser soup. We also ordered a kiampong and their special kikiam. I didn't like their kikiam considering I was at binondo. I was expecting a more authentic taste and presentation. Although they were generous with the amount of atchara served with it, which I liked. The kiampong was very tasty. You can eat it as is.

Found above Eng Bee Tin in Binondo, Cafe Mezzanine offers affordable Chinese delicacies. The xiao long bao are quite okay, big serving. Congee is also good. Unlimited coffee refills.

Cafe Mezannine

The place is very cozy and relaxing, inspired by the soldiers of fire, you would see all the corners and walls within the cafe pictures and things of the soldiers of the fire. I love how it was designed internally. You won't imagine a place like this exists inside a busy street. Since this is the last stop for our Binondo getaway we decided to have our desserts. We had fruit smoothies. I had Banana Milk Shake (It was delectable and refreshing). We also had Almond Shake(Yummy according to one of my friends). We had Tropical Mango Shake(I believe one of their best sellers too). All their shakes were great. Service is not that Good since one of the crew is not really accommodating. As regards cleanliness, i saw a cockroach flying and crawling. Hope they would look onto it moving forward..

También tuvimos almendra Shake(Yummy according to one of my friends). Hemos tenido Shake(I believe one of their best sellers too) Mango Tropical. Todos sus batidos eran grandes. Servicio no es tan buena como uno de los tripulantes no es muy servicial. En cuanto a limpieza, vi una cucaracha voladora y arrastrándose. Espero que se verían a él avanzando...

I ordered Kamto (soft beef with tendon) the soup tastes a bit sour. They also have pork asado which lacks the sweet sauce yet it still tastes good. I also ordered Beef Maki Mi (Beef Mami with starchy caramel brown soup) which i think lacks flavor.

My expectations were kinda high, but I left the place disappointed.

The service is boooooo! I've read a lot of good comments about the service crew but when we dined here, they were super slow. There were like 5 staff idle. We ordered just 3 items but it took them so long. Asking for the bill took them almost 10minutes and giving back the change another 10. So much time wasted in this resto. Sorry not sorry 128548

FOOD :
• Kiampong
- super dry & cold
•Lechon Macau
- without the sauce, it's boo 128078
- its cold too
• Bola-bola or squidball soup
- of all three, this is the one i actually like

Ran errands with my mom in the area prior to this visit. She ordered the Gokong noodle soup (in photo) which had the typical canton noodles. She said it was okay, but the broth was good. I ordered the Chicken Mami which was served extremely HOT. It was smoking the entire time I was eating, even afterwards. 128563 Nonetheless, we both liked my order better.

Service was pretty quick and efficient despite the number of customers. And it was already past lunch time. 128077
