A 15-hour drive, 45-minute boat ride and a bunch of stopovers to reach this island seems like eternity. But once you get to see the beauty of this place, you'll forget the fatigue you endured while traveling going here. That's what we experienced when we went to Cape Engaño.
Me and my hubby decided to check the place last January since December was a very busy month for us. At first, we were hesitant to go here alone. But when we were in Nueva Ecija area, we thought there's
no turning back. So we headed all the way to Tuguegarao from Quezon City and decided to spend the rest of the night there.
The next morning, we visited famous tourist sights of Tuguegarao then we headed to San Vicente Port in Sta Ana Cagayan. We reached the port around 4pm. We asked for some informations from the
dispatcher of boats and if we could join a group since we are only 2 going to Palaui Island. He said if we will come back the next day early, we might catch and join a group for us to cut our boat expense.
As promised, we went there early morning the next day. Unfortunately, there were few tourists that time.
No choice, we rented a boat for Php3,500. But with some haggling skills, they gave it for Php 3,000 only.
When we arrived Cape Engaño, we paid another Php100 per head for a guide. Ate Lanie, our guide was nice. She took good pictures of us while telling stories about the place. When we reached the top, we saw how spectacular the place was. So nice you feel like staying here forever. They said its the little Batanes of the North. I haven't been there so I guess budget wise, going to Palaui Island was worth every peso. Visit this place if you want a glimpse of Batanes. As what I see in pictures, there's a resemblance of the two islands. I'll write another review if ever I get the chance to visit Batanes. Maybe in another 10 years? Haha! I know Looloo app still exist by that time. ️

Travel time is crazy so I had to go on leave for this one. I first went to Isabela (10 hours by bus) and then took a van going to Cagayan Valley (4 hours). Travel time alone takes up almost a day!
The long travel time was worth it though. We had to go to their tourism office at the port to get a tour package. We paid Php3,500 for the boat and 4 island tours (Cape Engano, Punta Verde, Crocodile Island, and Anguib Beach).
It took us 40+ min. to get to Cape Engano in Palaui Island. The ride was a bit bumpy because of the choppy waves so we got a bit wet. We had to get 2 tour / trail guides and they gave us a warm welcome. They explained everything about the island especially the part where it was the venue for the 27th season of Survivor.
The lighthouse was about 110+ MASL so it was a really easy hike. There are concrete steps along the way so climbing wasn't really a problem at all.
Guide gave us a heads up whenever a picturesque spot was nearby. After a couple of more minutes, we finally reached the lighthouse. There weren't a lot of people when we went so we were able to take "clean" photos of the place.
Reaching the top gave us a view of the ocean and a couple of tiny islands. I wish I brought a folding chair and umbrella (and beer). Would've been perfect!
Some tips / info for your Cape Engano visit:
1. We had to pay Php300 for 1 guide at Palaui Island. One guide is assigned for a group of 4. If there's 5 of you, you have to get an additional guide.
2. There are souvenir shops at the jump-off site. They also sell water, sodas, and snacks.
3. The boat ride is long and uncomfortable because of the choppy waves. Put your valuable in a plastic or dry bag.
4. Our guide said that there are monkeys in the island. Too bad we didn't see one during our trip.
5. The main road going to Cagayan Valley from Isabela was bad. Lots of holes as some parts are being "repaired".
6. Make sure to try Cagayan's "Batil Patong Pansit"! Lots of eateries at Cagayan Valley offer it.
Overall, it was a great trip! Avail all the island tours to make most out of your Cagayan visit.

Breathtaking view from Cape Engano. Almost an hour 'buwis buhay' boat ride and half an hour trek under the scorching heat of the sun, all worth it!

Palaui Island is another 2 hr boat ride from sta ana cagayan port. Be sure to bring some water and fresh fish from the market for your lunch and dinner if you are planning to have an overnight stay in Palaui Island. The place will take you away from technologies since signal from both network are only available in few parts of the island. People here are very accomodating but some would asked payment for charging of gadgets. Cape Engano is what I loved about Palaui Island the place is not all about beaches. Cape Engano is wonderful batanes marlboro country like greenery. The old lighthouse on top give you view of the island. I love how clean the place and the breathe of fresh air was so refreshing. The hike going up was worth every step since every step higher a much more beautiful scenery of the island. The old lighthouse is also picturesque we almost took 1hr just taking picture around the lighthouse. Taking picture of every angle and panorama shot. A must visit if you are planning to Palaui Island.

Beautiful lighthouse, gives you a 360 degrees view of Babuyan Island, Dos Hermanas Island. To reach the top, you need to climb several flights of stairs, then a long, steep trail. The view is really worth it! 🏻 Reminds me of the lighthoused in Batanes because of the view of the crashing waves and sea of blue.

Hiked 300ft just to get to the top. Although it was scorching hot, I'm glad I did get there in piece, since I'm too easy to hyperventilate and good thing I have a water in hand (that's a must).
It was worth hiking all the way up coz the scenery is beyond magnifique..
The place is an ecotourism zone, let's all be disciplined enough to take all our litters when leaving., when we got there, our tour guides kept picking pieces of trash left from the other tourists..
3500php/boat - 8pax, 4 islands (Angguib Island, Palaui Island, Punta Verde and Crocodile Island) + 300php for tour guide (4 persons) / 600php tour guide (6 persons)

I felt like I was in some kind of a Jurassic Park island, swear. This place is so surreal, every turn is like a magical landscape unfolding in my eyes. The lush scenery of hills and the sound of the waves was paradise. I don't ever wanna leave this place anymore!
Going there was quite challenging bec you have to face the massive pacific waves. By massive I'm not referring to the surfer waves in LU and Zambales, it's like it's gonna eat the whole boat kind of waves. Haha but it's was all worth it. You can see from the top of the whole island. It's a 37 step lighthouse, a little rusty (since it's already 123 years old) but still standing strong.
You can also go to the lighthouse via trekking, they have 2 trails available for you. I didn't have the luxury of time to do that but I'd definitely go back for it! :)
Oh and btw, Palaui was the island wherein the 27th and 28th season of Survivor USA was filmed :)
