If you want to see a quick history about Cebu, The Cebu Heritage Monument displays a descriptive tableau of events, starting from the baptism of Rajah Humabon until Pedro Calungsod was beatified.

The monument is situated in the original Parian Plaza in the Parian District. The Parian District has also an interesting history. I know this because my maternal side of the family used to live in this area. I remember spending time in this area during my childhood days. The Parian District is the location of the residences of the most prominent Cebuano families during the Spanish period. This was also the place where the trading system happens. If you do a historical tour of Cebu, make sure to stop by Casa Gorordo. It tells you the full history of how Cebu was like in the olden days. 128521

The monument features scenes from Rajah Humabon’s time, the battle between Lapu-Lapu and Magellan, famous churches that stood in time, as well as famous people such as Pedro Calungsod and the late president Sergio Osmeña Sr.

The monument was constructed from 1997-2000. What once stood in the same location was the St. John the Baptist Church. The reason why it no longer stood there was because it was demolished in 1875 by the diocese of Cebu. There is no entrance fee and it is just a few walks away from the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House.

If you love history, visiting this monument gives you an overview and quick story about the island of Cebu. 128521

Tip:
| Bring umbrella, this place doesn’t have any shade
| Free entrance
| The souvenirs just outside is a bit cheaper than the other places

We visited the monument as a part of our DIY city tour... We didn't appreciate it as much due to the midday heat, but it was imposing and well-maintained. 128522
