You know you are a valued customer when you see your chair being prepped even before you walk-in through the glass door. This is how I feel whenever I get a haircut at my favorite barbershop. As I settle into my “suki” barber’s chair, all I need to say is, “gaya ng dati”, then I forget about the rest. I can proceed to read the newspapers set aside for me or surf away (or even write a looloo review) while Romy (my barber) goes about doing his business. Very little words are spoken and communication is just a series of head nods and eye contact that confirm whether or not we are on the right track. I know he is almost done when he starts sharpening his razor and shaves my sideburns and nape. Haircut is done in less than 30 minutes.
I gladly fork over P100 for the haircut and another P50 for tip. Romy “asks” if I want to buy some tinapa from his wife. Of course I say yes and she comes in with pre-wrapped tinapa for me.
PS. No pics because it seems Romy and I misunderstood each other this time when I said, “kaunti lang”. I meant “kaunti lang ang ibawas” but he must have understood it to mean “kaunti lang ang itira”! Oh well, I still prefer having my hair cut by Romy.
