I would have never guessed that my new favorite doughnuts would come from a bakery that built itself on cupcakes. Sonja's started the fancy cupcake trend way back in 2006, and since then competition has gotten stiff with cupcakery's popping up left and right. I guess it was a good decision (and a good time) to expand their product base to doughnuts. Sa sobrang sarap ng doughnuts nila i wouldn't be surprised if they rebranded to Doughnuts by Sonja instead. 128517

With the limited supply, i've seen people line up for these and stocks finished by the afternoon! These are only available in the Serendra branch but the good thing is they now offer them EVERY weekend (they used to make them only sporadically and on special events/promos).

I swear, these doughnuts are soooo good you'd almost forget about the more known nearby doughnut shops. They come in several very interesting flavors na magugulat ka na... "pwede pala to sa doughnut?!?" They all conform to the same standard, dusted with sugar and stuffed with flavored cream. Flavors like truffle, olive oil & basil, toasted rice, and cheese & pepper are unexpected winners. But trust me, every flavor is good! And one more thing i noticed is even if kept in the fridge for 2-3 days, the doughnut bread doesn't go stale, dry, or harden! Yep... it amazingly stays soft, moist, and sweet!

Sonja's please set up shop in the south... kahit doughnuts lang muna. 128514

I was curious how their doughnuts would taste like given that they are known for their TDF cupcakes.

We walked all the way from bgc to serendra just to check the hype. We were greeted with a long line of hungry customers and sweltering heat (the AC was busted) 128532

Here's what we ordered:
Creme Caramel, Strawberry Cheesecake, Gianduja and Truffle
The dough was soft. It reminded me of bicho-bicho with sugar that clings in your mouth. We liked all the flavors except Truffle which tasted weird. I really couldn't figure it out.

Would have wanted to try the other flavors but the special offer ended yesterday 🙄

Sonja brought the cupcake back in the map.  I got enchanted by the lovely colors of their miniature cakes.  Apart from aesthetics,  their cupcakes are the best there is.

That was a decade ago.  Yeah,  tempus fugit.  To celebrate a decade of whipping out awesome cupcakes,  Sonja's decided to make some doughnuts for a limited time.

Lady Luck wasn't on my side during their first run.  I got giddy and excited when i found out that they decided to make more for one last weekend.  Wee!!!

I speed walked under the sweltering heat to get my hands on dem doughnuts.  Boy,  was i glad to see three pieces of Vanilla Bean left.   The plan was to try one variant but the olive oil and basil was flirting with me from the glass case.

| Vanilla Bean.  The dough is soft,  it is lile biting into sugar sprinkled clouds.   The vanilla bean filling is creamy and not over sweet.  I loved every single bite.

| Olive Oil and Basil.  Flavor sounds odd eh?  Trust me when i say that there is no iota of weird in terms of taste.  I cant even taste basil!  Which is a good thing really.  The olive oil is very subtle,  it's  almost non-existent.  All I taste is the cream custard.

I would've wanted to try all the flavors but buying some is difficult.  A friend wanted to buy a dozen and will come back to pick em up.  Alas,  they do not allow it.  I find it a lil weird as the request is not a reservation,  it's an actual purchase.  Oh well,  i guess they have to work on the customer demand if they want to offer this again.  Add more branches on the list perhaps?  It is a hassle for some to endure traffic for a doughnut.

Albeit my love for the doughnuts, I'm giving them three stars because of the uncool rule.

Ang sarap!!!! Creme Caramel 60.00 and Olive Oil & Basil Donuts 75.00. Soft, fluffy cream-filled, grown up sugar donuts. Sarap! Sarap! Sarap!!!

Initially intended as a limited edition offering for their 10th year anniversary, tomorrow should've been the last day to try these. However I talked to one of the owners this afternoon and he mentioned they are now going to offer these every weekend. Hooray!

It's a good thing I only ordered 2, because I'd be eating a whole box of 6 all on my own. The bread is really soft. Remember those made on-the-spot fried sugar donuts in Rustans circa xx? Parang ganun, but better. I hate filled donuts because I find them too sweet. Sonja's filling is very creamy, very generous, not too sweet, and just a hint of your selected flavor. Thi is a 180 for me. I was totally smiling while eating these.

I haven't really been going to Sonjas as I've been disappointed with their red velvet. It's not as good as when it first came out. I used to get their pistachio and strawberry a lot when I couldn't get satisfied with their red velvet. Now though, I am so happy to have found a new reason to visit.

I'm going back for the truffle and caccio e pepe.

After we had a sweet escapade at the Freezer Burn. We walked a few meters to Serendra all the way to Cupcakes by Sonja to try their donuts which is available every weekends only. This offering is for Cupcakes by Sonja's 10th Year Anniversary Celebration.

When we're at the counter there were only four flavors available to choose by that time because of the demands for donuts. They will release again after one hour. Few customers are in line to try the donuts too. Which we decided to have two flavors of donuts.

127849 Vanilla Bean for Php60.00 - 11088110881108811088️4/5
"The dough of the donut is like a classic Pinoy donut which is deeply fried and rolled it with sugar. The first bite reminds me of the donut that I can afford to buy in the street. Yes, it's a bicho-bicho style they just add and inserted vanilla bean filling inside. I find it sweeter than the other donut I've got."

127849 Olive Oil + Basil for Php75.00 - 1108811088110881108811088️ 5/5
"This one caught my attention when I was in the counter and I even bought it in a rush because there were two pieces left. Before the first bite I smell the goodness aroma of the basil. And the taste... WINNER! It's so lite even the cream was so thick and heavy because it's not that sweet."

I am looking forward to try other flavors on my next visit like the truffle donut. 10084

WARNING: THIS IS A RANT POST

For the 10th year anniversary of Cupcakes by Sonja, they came up with 12 donut flavors that I have been wanting to try. They only have them available every Friday to Sunday. That's fine and I was so giddy to try.

They have given samples to social media influencers and famous bloggers to hype it up and I was one victim of this. Not only that, I've been a fan of Sonja's ever since and would buy dozens of their cupcakes for family gatherings and even as giveaways during Christmas time for my daughter's classmates. So imagine my disappointment.

Went there on a Friday around 4PM since they said a new batch of all flavors will be out that time. We got there and only found 3 flavors. I asked when the other flavors will become available and they said by 5PM. I wanted to get 1 dozen assorted because 1 dozen with only 3 flavors is boooo! I asked if I can pay for 1 dozen assorted now and pick up later because I needed to rush for my daughters' trick or treat. They gave me a hard no. I went to the "owners" not sure but they still said no.

They said that when the donuts are ready "baka magkapatong patong ung orders" so they don't allow reservations. I said I will pay now so it's good as sold but maybe it's too much hassle for them to remember that I have an order and set aside a dozen for me for pickup. Sobrang hassle for them maybe that's why for the sake of customer service and customer request, they declined. NOT EVEN OFFERING A SOLUTION. I felt bad. I'm not trying to be a diva. I just wanted to try their donuts which they hyped up so much but not able to deliver. Maybe that's a marketing strategy? Maybe they just really don't need my money? Maybe they're too popular that they don't care about little stuff like that anymore.

Well anyway, that changed my mind about them big time. I'm just a customer anyway. 128530

After so many years, I had the chance to buy some cupcakes at Sonja's in Serendra again. I used to frequent this place in my "younger" HAHA years as it is near my parents' house.

Alas, I was in Serendra last night, and my husband was craving for something sweet. Stopped by to buy some cupcakes. Unfortunately, they only got one piece of the pistachio and straberrries cupcake so I bought it. I also got the classic vanilla sunshine and the chocolate swirl something. The taste of the cupcakes certainly brought back fond memories of college. They are still dense, flavoursome, and delicately sweet. 127852

Crupcakes are uniquely Cupcakes by Sonjas creation. They're the hybrid of CRoissant and cUPCAKES. They take the form of a cupcake but instead of using cake batter, croissant dough was used. So, instead of moist cakey desserts, you'll get a flakey one.

Got the the chance to try them coz I've been seeing them in my news feed whenever there is a weekend market. It was actually an interesting creation. I tried their Matcha Green Tea and Peanut Butter Speculoos flavors. They were both okay.

The croissant was flaky but was oily too. It's messy to eat because you'll get flakes all over once you take a bite. The Matcha flavored one had a very very subtle matcha flavor. Too diluted with sugar and cream. The Peanut Butter Speculoos had peanut butter inside the crupcake and was topped with Speculoos and some nuts.

Not really something I will buy again or recommend. Nothing special.

These crupcakes... Are evil!!! 128539 There I go biting onto something I thought would be another sad little experiment developed by someone to commercialize & fool people into thinking it's the latest craze but after I took that bite... I was only left shocked by how undervalued and how it's not getting enough attention! People, it is delicious! From the filling to the texture! Pure joy & love is what it is! I only tried two flavors yet and both will have their own set of admirers but both are equally good! I can't wait to try some more!!! 128512

A lady named Sonja put cupcakes back in the map.  This shop is responsible for the popularity of the miniature cakes.

The first visit at Sonja's was during their humble beginnings at Serendra.  I remember every detail as this is the first time i visited Narnia (Fully Booked for the layman,  the biggest branch in BGC).  I was with a dear friend and we bought the mint cupcakes to go.  Coffee and cupcakes at Narnia - perfect.  The moist pastry is impressive,  same with the flavorful icing.  I was a fan since then.

Fast forward to today.  I am still a fan of their cupcakes,  i like the fact that they are continuously innovating in terms of flavor combination.  I will never get tired of the classics - vanilla and red velvet.  I used to pair these sweet treats with Bourbon.  Nowadays, a cup of black coffee is a better alternative for booze.

I am sure almost everyone has visited the Serendra branch.  The joint is instagram worthy,  a doll house full of miniature cakes.

My former officemate used the term "overrated" when she described Cupcakes by Sonja. This is not to say that she didn't find their cupcakes pleasing, it's just that she didn't think there was anything special about them. I decided to find out for myself when I went to BGC. First, I love the interiors, just like the other cupcake places, Sonja is really girly and charming. It's like you are in a kitchen right in the comforts of your own home, the floral wallpaper, the chalkboard for the menu, and the cupcakes on the glass shelves, everything looked so cute!

I was with a friend and we only managed to buy one cupcake each. I had PB&J (peanut butter and jelly) for PHP75 while she had Mocha Motion for PHP62.

I like the fact that the cupcakes are visually appealing. Based on the menu they also have a wide array of flavors. Based on my friend's assessment and I quote, "Masyado siyang mahal sa 62...di lumevel ang lasa sa price, masyadong matamis." She added that it was not the kind that would make you ask for more.

I would have to agree, at least with what I had, the PB&J. It was good, the cake was moist, dense, with rich chocolate flavor, but I didn't find it memorable if you know what I mean. I found the tartness of the grape-flavored jelly a bit intense but I liked the peanut butter frosting, it was a bit gritty and not too sweet.

Still, I don't think two flavors are enough to make a thorough assessment about the bakery so there's a good possibility I'd come back to try other flavors.

Cupcakes by Sonja accepts orders for customized cakes and you may also hold a party in their bakeshop.

Omg. Totally forgot how good Sonja's cupcakes are! I'm so happy I gathered my guts and just walked right in there and ordered myself the Elvis and choco something. . . After my first bite, I wanted to close my eyes and just savor each calorie! Lol. I'm not one to try cupcakes at the mall since I usually order the home made ones but after this visit, I think we just rekindled an old flame hahaha 128149

This is where the cupcake craze started! They're big, yummy but a bit pricey. 128514 But I don't think they're the best there is. I must say, there are other cupcakery's out there that are much affordable and delicious too! 128521
