Reasonably priced place to stay in La Union but you'll need to book in advance. The room I had was very nice. I really do appreciate the house rules. Staff and front desk are friendly. Bar and Dining area can get filled during the night.

Food's really great. Plenty of healthy choices. Free continental breakfast in the morning. Other restaurants or coffee shops are just a few blocks or a tricycle away. Tricycles are just outside the parking lot of Flotsam.

For surfing, you can't really swim or surf (unless you're an advanced surfer) on the front beach. Surfing is done on the other beach-Taboc Beach that's a jeepney ride away. Same price for surfing lessons you get in Baler.

(Warning: Don't be too friendly with backpackers. There was just one bad experience I had with a female solo backpacker who was hanging out at Flotsam and hoping to stay in one of the rooms. She was friendly at first but eventually she tried asking me if she can stay in the room I booked for the night and she'll pay me. She totally reflected a con artist so I eventually ignored her but such backpackers are unavoidable to encounter in a hostel since it's not exclusive to those who booked the place.)

Still rating this place 5 stars. But if you like peace and quiet without being disturbed by a random stranger in La Union, stay in Kahuna. :-)

I fell in love with this place from the moment I step in.. 128525128524

Located at the eastern part of san Juan beach in La Union, you'll find this rustic and relaxing place.

Kubos, bean bags, swings, old lamps, wooden chairs, relaxing classical music, and good food 128076. Not to mention, beach front 9786

Sadly I was not able to spend a night here and was only able to stay for a few hours. But every bitsy second I spent here was worthwhile. 128524

We ordered a couple of smoothie bowls from Makai bowls and its oh soo good!! 128557 a hearty healthy treat that I could eat every day..

Ive been day dreaming to come back and spend atleast 3 days here just to chill and relax 128514. It would be perfect 128524

I booked an overnight stay at Flotsam and Jetsam, a hostel located at San Juan, La Union. You can see it on the side of the road along McArthur Highway. I assumed that the bus drivers know where it is based on some blog posts but it was not the case on the bus that I got on. Thankfully, my phone’s network (Globe) works well in San Juan so I was able to rely on Google Maps. I suggest that you use it if the driver or the conductor is not familiar with Flotsam and Jetsam, or you can look on the left side of the street when you reach San Juan. Just watch out for the Flotsam and Jetsam signage.

Flotsam and Jetsam is called an art hostel. Indeed there are some art pieces on display in their in-house resto, but to call it as such seems inappropriate to me. In my experience, party hostel is more a fitting description with all the noise that they made that Saturday night. This doesn't mean I hated the hostel, well I won't go as far as say that I loved it but it was okay. I liked the ambiance and that it is quite close to the beach.

Check-in time is 2PM, I was about an hour early so they told me that I could hang out and wait in their in-house restaurant. I did, I went ‘round the back and found the restaurant that faces the beach. My friend who went to La Union recently met new friends and hang out a lot at Flotsam and Jetsam’s restaurant. He described the crowd as young and hip; the rich kids from the city. When I saw them I realized what he was talking about. They looked to be around in their teens or early 20s, with beautiful skin, and speaking either in English or Taglish. Most of them came in their own cars and they didn’t sleep in the kubo dorms but in the building with aircon rooms.

I stayed at the kubo dorm (PHP 780 - USD 16.76) that has four bunk beds. Towel is provided and there is also a locker where you can keep your personal belongings. Each bed has a pillow, a blanket, and a mosquito net. There are also some mini fans to use if it gets too hot. It was comfortable enough for me that the only thing that ruined my sleep was the noise coming from the party that night.

If you stay at the kubo dorm you can only use the shared bathroom and toilet. I didn’t mind because they were clean and spacious. You can buy from the reception for toiletries but I suggest that you just bring your own bath essentials to eliminate unnecessary expenses.

There is free breakfast from 7-10 AM. It's basically just coffee, banana, cereal with milk, and some toast or pandesal with different kinds of spread, such as butter, peanut butter, and fruit jam.

I recommend the place if you like to party and meet new people; best to come with your friends. If like me you are selectively social and alone, this may not be an ideal hostel
for you.

Is the beach calling you? Then if you're somewhere near the North this place is right for you.

It is a beach front hostel perf for surfers or people who just wants to chill. Oh.. and they also have yoga!

The week I spent at Flotsam and Jetsam is almost blur. Its difficult to put into words the 'awesomeness' of what had happened so heres a summary instead:

- rustic and relaxing
- alive at night
- the kubos are a LOT more comfortable than i thought
- mini fan for each bunk
- very clean place
- right by the beach
- good food, even better drinks
- bathrooms and toilets are clean (with bidet)
- great customer service and housekeeping
- they have dogs!
- friendly local community

Will definitely stay here again!

Great pig out place! We loved everything we ordered:
- Beef stir fry bowl
- Burger steak grilled to perfection
- Shrimp in tomato cream sauce pasta with the freshest shrimps
- Pepperoni and meathead brick oven pizzas

I wanted to try the seared tuna but it was sold out. Next visit, will definitely try the red chicken curry.

The red sangria and mojito were done right, so refreshing, with just the right amount of alcohol for that chill buzz 128076🏽

Thumbs up to the most instagrammable place in La Union. Hahaha! I now understand the buzz about this Hostel. Lakas maka-modern probinsya life! From the location itself na katabi ng dagat to the good food they serve and the wasted nights c/o the 5 minute drink, everything was perfect. I love that they serve cereals unlimited-ly. They also had the selection of brewed coffee and milk, orange juice, and tea for breakfast which was very posh of them.

There was a time that I wouldn't want to go home and all I wanted to do was sit on the bean bag, eat breakfast, talk to my friends, soak up the sun and enjoy the view of the waves on the beach.

Plus they had free wifi and outlets to charge your phone. Life is good 128526

Just remembered I promised to make a review for their hotel. So yeah, Flotsam and Jetsam is one of those unique and good hostels you can stay if you're up to a short La Union trip and go surfing. It's located just along the highway, be sure to be very observant of their very negligible banner. We weren't able to notice it.

The place looked hipster and Instagram worthy from all over. Nice layout of differently colored ornaments, surfing-related stuff like boards, pictures, and etc, hung lamps and lights of different designs and colors. Cool and relaxing vibe. The place looks a bit different at night also.

Why the name? I wonder also. The manager explained it to us. 'If you float some, you get some' If I understood it right, it's a term used by pirates before. When a ship wrecks, and it floats, it's a go signal for pirates to get some goodies from that ship. That explains the differently designs of lamps hung everywhere in the hostel's lobby. Pretty interesting!

Isha S did the reservation and we all paid around 700 bucks for a night. Sulit for the clean and good service from their staff. We stayed in one of their kubos which is good for 8 people. Sakto since we were eight 128077🏻 not air-conditioned but ready with mosquito nets and electric fans. You won't feel hot staying at a seaside hostel anyways. A good breather from the polluted Metro Manila air.

What's also good about the hostel is they have a restaurant and a coffee shop inside. The famous El Union Coffee is there and I'm not sure if it's the same owner with the hostel. After buying your coffee, you can relax at a common tambayan facing the beach.

Hostel is quite a long walk from Urbiztondo Beach, where the surfing is. We did not mind walking all the way. 128517

Recommending this place to those who are in a tight budget or just those wanting to experience a good and relaxing place to stay in.

If it floats, you get some.

If it flotsam, you jetsam. Well, at least that's what the supervisor at the hostel told us. Apparently, flotsam and jetsam (aside from being the names of Ursula's beloved eel minions from The Little Mermaid) are actually "pirate" terms that resulted from shipwrecks. Flotsam meaning things that have floated to the surface after a shipwreck and jetsam meaning things deliberately thrown aboard. Anyway, makes for a memorable hostel name! The place actually reflects the terminology it was based on as it looks like a mish-mash of things from all around the world; from the different cups and plates, mismatched chairs, colorful bean bags, lamps strewn about as well as a bunch of knick-knacks and other items displayed here and there (including shells, ukuleles, guitars, books, board games and statuettes). The entire place is very colorful and cheery. It exudes a warm, homey yet lively vibe. So instagrammable and hipster-y.

Check in time is at 2 PM and check out is at 11 AM. They have three types of accommodations - the Shophouse dorms, the Kubo dorms and the Sea Suite. We got the Kubo Dorm, which is good for 8 people (yay there were 8 of us!). It is basically a kubo or hut made out of bamboo. It contains eight single beds, individual lockers and fans. It cost us about 700+ pesos each. You also get access to the public bathroom containing shower rooms and toilet stalls. The toilets are clean and are always well-stocked with toilet paper plus they have bidets! 128525128525 You can also adjust the temperature of the showers and they have benches to place your stuff on as well caddies in the shower area itself. Wi-fi is available (obvs a major plus in this day and age) and you also get to have free breakfast in the morning consisting of bread, jams, cereals, milk and juice.

The people working at the hostel are really nice and are always ready to make you feel even more comfortable. Double thumbs up! 128077128077 There are also cute doggies wandering about who are also super friendly and are content to lounge beside you. Don't forget to be considerate as well and abide by the hostel house rules. 128521

The place also offers hook-ups for surfing lessons and guides for trekking to the Tangadan falls. Just ask for their rates.

The hostel also has a bar, restaurant and a cafe (separate review for that). We had dinner here during our first evening and it was a pleasant experience, even though we had to dine by the beach in the dark (maybe put more candles on the table or standing lights in this area). Prices for the food were about 200+ pesos per dish which was fairly okay considering the amount and taste. They offer pastas, rice meals and pizzas. We had their prawns, grilled fish (came with rice and salad) shrimp pasta and crispy squid for sharing. Food was good and was a fitting end to our first day at La Union.

We also enjoyed some after-dinner drinks from the bar including their lychee mojito which was a group favorite 128514.

In summary, this place is highly recommended if you really want to kick back, relax and enjoy the beach and all that comes with it in a chill environment.

They're expanding to be a hotel soon, but I hope they don't change the friendly, hipster-y, laid-back vibe of the place that has become what they're known for. 128522

We went to San Juan, La Union last Thursday and we stayed in this hostel. This is one of those spontaneous trips and I just said yes because I needed one badly. Thanks to Isha S and etc for inviting me on one crazy adventure yet again. 128077🏻

Sooo, we stayed in this hostel called Flotsam and Jetsam. I'll have to make a separate review on the hostel and their restaurant. Aaaand, I am choosing food over sleep/rest so here it goes. 128523128523

The Food.

After trekking to and swimming in Tangagdan Falls (review also to come soon), we were so exhausted from the crazy adventure we had. Super crazy 128514 thus we needed a looot of food because we deserved one after half a day of trekking and that very challenging way back to the hostel.

Both dishes I ordered and shared with friends were good. I got their Fish128031 and Chips127839 and had their southern fried chicken as appetizer to share. I'm happy that they did not use cream dory in their fish. It was tasty even without the dip. I also liked the chips that came with it. Legit thinly sliced potatoes with sprinkled with some bbq powder (i think). Also, it had salad on the side which was a good neutralizer of the flavors. 128077🏻

The southern fried chicken was also really good. Liked the sweet and smoky bbq flavor which seeped not just in the batter but til the meat. And I liked that the meat was not chewy/tough. 127831127831

For drinks, I just had their Lychee Mojito. Pretty good drink and friends also liked it. I think we ordered four or five glasses? 128517

One thing I did not like with this visit is their lack of tables. They can accommodate maybe 20 pax in their fluorescent light lit area while others had to stay at the dark side of the world, and that was us. Actually it was a good experience eating in the insufficiently lit area near the beach and feeling the sands on our toes. Our issue was that it was hard to take good photos of the food 128514 or maybe it would've been better to have candles on our tables?

All in all I think the food was good especially that we were really hungry. Enough to keep us full. Prices were not cheap though.

Cute and cozy place. Perfect for instagramming :)
This is a place where you surely wanna visit again and again especially those surfer bods. Not only it is budget friendly but also serves good food and encourages interaction with people. The place is designed to be a communal place, so you won't be stuck at bed and enjoy the beach and waves!

We were supposed to order their pizza but they serve pizza during dinner only. Oopsie.

So instead, I ordered the usual fish and chips (the search isn't over yet) while my friend ordered beef stir fry(?).
I actually loved their fish and chips, and it's the best fish and chips so far. 128076
