While looking around the mall, my mother spotted Hap Chan and wanted to give it a try. She was craving for some Chinese food, so my father and I gave in and agreed to have dinner there.

When we were at the door, we were warmly greeted by the crew. When we came in, there were just two other tables that were occupied, so we were ushered in quickly.

While waiting for our orders, we were served complementary tea.

My mother wanted the usual Chinese thoroughfare (and then some), so we had:

• Siomai
Ordinary pork siomai. And it's processed meat. The wrapping was, unusually, a bit tough at the sides. 128552

• Sliced Beef Steak with Mango
The beef was tender, and the oyster sauce that came with it complemented the beef. I liked the champignon mushrooms that were in it too; they were soft and juicy. I wasn't too fond of the ripe mangoes though because they were a little sour.

• Stuffed eggplant
Now I seriously thought that for this dish, it would be a hollowed-out eggplant stuffed with peppers and other vegetables. But lo and behold, it was like the opposite when the dish came. For each piece, there were breaded peppers and onions, and a slice of eggplant was put on top. (See photo.) Ummm... what was this dish called again? 128566

It didn't taste bad though. The breading was good, the eggplant was fried well, and it wasn't oily. But I just wish the eggplant was the star of the show.

• Wanton Noodle Soup
The noodles were thin and firm, which was good. The wanton was steamed well, because it was firm and soft without being soggy. The cabbage was fresh. The soup was clear, yet it had flavor. But it still tastes like your average wanton noodle soup. 127836

Our meal was just ordinary. No wow factor whatsoever. 128528

We had to ask for water a couple of times. During that time, there were already a lot of people in the restaurant, so the crew was really quite busy. It took them some time to prepare the bill too.

The restaurant's interiors were nice though. It was clean and orderly. And I liked the classy big red lanterns that were hanging from the ceiling. 127982

So in two words, our experience here was: "OK lang." Not bad, but nothing amazing either.

The food was normal. I ordered a beef brisket and it was alright. It tasted like an ordinary brisket. The service was mediocre. They were kind of slow.
