Since I was little, my grandfather introduced this cake to us. Classic Mocha from Hizon's. I loved how the caramel inside the cake melts in your mouth. It reminds me of my grandfather and how he used to buy their cakes on our birthdays. I remembered what he said to us, "I won't buy food/desserts if they aren't delicious."

Absolutely the Best of the Best. And here are the reasons why:
1) An absolute classic. You can see from the interiors and exteriors of the resto. This is an oldie but goodie. Dolphy's favorite cafe in Manila, they even made a special menu where you can see what dolphy's faves are. The taste of their cake have not changed all these years, I have been eating this ever since I could remember. But the price have definitely skyrocketed all these years. Haha. The biggest size costs 1,550!!! But it's definitely worth it. This cake is still popular, I just hope the younger generation appreciates this old time favorite so it could still be around for years to come.
2) Makes you nostalgic. This cake bring back a lot of memories from the old days. You remember your childhood with every bite. You just can't help but reminisce those moments when you were a kid when life was just about the good things just like the goodness of the cake.
3) Appeals to a lot of people. My husband does not have a sweet tooth at all but when it comes to Hizon's cake, he just could not resist. It's not too sweet, every bite is just right. The taste has been consistent all these years, they have every right to charge 1550 for a whole cake.
Enough said right?

Meh. I don't get the raves on their cakes, I still think Estrel's waaay better.

The chiffon cake felt like it was soaked in some liquid, I didn't care for the buttercream frosting, and the caramel filling was burnt tasting and too sweet. 3 stars though because my aunts realllly love this.128563128563

Classic pinoy comfort food. This place never gets old. This was a place I frequented in the early 90's.

Must try: baked turkey with camote (Thursdays only), braised lengua, grilled pork chops

Their brewed coffee is good. No need for sugar and cream.

Hizon's Ensaymada is truly a classic love! #1 on my Ensaymada list!! Aside from almost having the same price with a 2pcs chicken meal, i don't mind indulging this! It's always fresh & never tastes old, the succulent meeting of the sugar, cheese and the soft warm bread when you bite into it is heaven! 128525127881

Another family favorite. Hizon's mocha cake is also consistently good. I've enjoyed the same great tasting mocha cake ever since I was a kid and that goes way way way back. The quality has never faltered through the years. That's why it's a family favorite. Their queso de bola ensaimada is to die for too!

Even if I came home late during my birthday because of an event meeting, this whole square of cake was waiting for me in the master's room.

Their chiffon cake is always a trusty option. However, I found my new love of caramel cakes in Estrell's, thus the 4 stars.

It is funny how I would celebrate my birthday 4 times. 128582

My sister requested Hizon's mocha cake for her birthday. So, my mom got the biggest size!127874128077128513

The cake has two thick chiffon cakes sandwiching what seems to be caramel. Then, mocha buttercream coating the outer part. The decorations are also buttercream- piped, colored buttercream. (That's a plus for us since we do not like those hard, overly-sweet cake decorations)

I love this even though i prefer denser desserts. It won't easily satisfy (i can eat 2 BIG slices of this) but it makes up for its lightness with its flavor. It has a hint of mocha that blends well with whatever is in between the chiffon cakes. Also, It is not at all overly sweet.

Just like lord stow's egg tarts, i have been eating this since i was a kid. And it always tastes the same every time we order it. 128522

Since Hizon's is the favorite place of Comedy King Dolphy, they created a menu that runs down some of his fav.food, which also gives an idea to some of their customers on what to order and their best seller as well. The owner of this restau loves vintages stuff, well I enjoyed palabok and ensaymada :)

Speaking of....
Aika C, look who showed up! 128586

This mocha chiffon cake has seen me grow throughout the years, literally, because as long as I could remember, it has always been a staple on birthday celebrations.

It is light but moist cake topped off with some soft mocha buttercream frosting. I don't know why but I am almost always drawn to deserts containing coffee.

It is sweet but not overly, very subtle, I would say, even if it has that thin caramel filling in between the layers. It is also doesn't feel heavy and overwhelming to your tastebuds, so don't skimp on the bites! It is so light that you wouldn't even notice that you're having the 3rd round.

Lastly, I like how they maintained the quality and the taste of their pastries. Try this cake if you have not already!

P.S. Don't dare say I cheated, I wasn't aware that they also bought a cake prior in writing the previous review! Hehe!128581

Baked goodies brought home by my dad. I think he is planning to get us all chubby real soon 128055

I loved Ensaimadas more than any pastry as a kid, I even recall occasional visits on the way home from school to that tiny local bakery, which sadly is closed now, to buy it and grin insanely upon those first bites while it was still hot. What a sweet toothed kid. 128529

Hizon's ensaimadas, from the soft fluffy texture to the buttery taste, reminded me of that beloved sugary afternoon snack.

It is ordinary when compared to its high-end cousin from the Cake Club of Diamond Hotel, but either way, it is still good.

The Polvorons were delightful, however, it is something I would crave, I still prefer that of HOP's. That silver bar in the photo is the Mazapan De Pili, which I have yet to take a tiny bite of.

Hizon's Grilled Porkchop has always been my favorite dish, but not today. The porkchop served to me was not cooked well, in short, it is still raw. To make matter worse, I already called the attention of the waiter to please re-fry or cook the raw meat. He told me that it's only litid.. whatever that is, I was not convinced. I just hope that the cook and staff would be more responsible since it's their customer's health is at stake here. Boo. One star or no star for so much disappointed and how the staff handled the situation. 128545

By the way, I took the picture before eating it. I was soo excited at first not knowing that the second meat, which is below the first porkchop is raw!
