Taiwan's Popular Chicken is here!

This is not my first time at Hot Star. My second actually. This is located at 2F Katips Building,318 F. Dela Rosa Katipunan.

Went here with my daughter Adelheid L after I fetched her as she was sick and advise to go home. We had Crispy Junior Chicken and Crispy Junior Fish then add regular fries as no soup abailable, then for drinks , lemonade and root beer.

Service was fast; they have wifi and sockets there, spotted also Looloo sticker there 9786

I have heard a lot of good reviews about a Taiwanese fried chicken place but I was never motivated to go as fried chicken is just fried chicken for me. Nothing special. But I guess I was destined to cross paths with this establishment when V recommended that we have dinner here.

Hello, Hot Star Large Fried Chicken.

The restaurant is on the second floor of the building with Engine 46 at the ground floor. The place isn’t that big but spacious enough to accommodate more than 10 groups of hungry diners (mostly students on weekdays).

The food is pretty affordable. The Original Large Fried Chicken and the Crispy Large Fried Chicken are priced at PHP110 while BBQ Large Fried Chicken is at PHP125. Just add PHP35 and you get a cup of rice and drink. V and V2 got Almond Ice Crush while I chose Black Gulaman.

I loved my drink! Though I wasn’t allowed to drink anything cold yet, I still drank it. It was yummy! It was like Black Gulaman shake! I had a few sips of almond and as a person not fond of the Almond Jelly dessert, I didn’t like the drink either.

We were amazed with the size of the chicken. It was huge (but flat). After giving V and V2 a bit of mine, I started munching on my Crispy Large Fried Chicken. I’m not so sure if I was just hungry but the chicken was pretty good. The skin was seasoned well and it sure was crispy. It was slightly buttery.

The BBQ Large Fried Chicken tasted like Crispy Chicken Teriyaki with less sauce. It was good as well. But I guess those who are not fond of sweet food will not like this.

I didn’t try the Original Large Fried Chicken but according to V2, it had an umay factor hence the reason why he removed the skin. (That or he likes to eat healthy.)

Overall, it was a pretty good dinner. It was filling though despite the generous serving, I wanted a bit more chicken. (It’s the glutton in me talking.)

One tip though, come early as the place gets PACKED!

After UP’s Annual Lantern Parade, I wander around Katipunan with two of my org buddies. We were in search of a place to have dinner. Since it was their treat, anything goes.

Due to being curious with the largest fried chicken served in town, we ended up in Hot Star. Considering that two of us haven't tried it there yet, it was definitely our first time! So we’re a little bit excited. However, despite being aware of their 'large servings,' I was still surprised seeing it with my very own eyes. That's why when everything was served and settled, I just murmured, "How can I finish this one all by myself?"

The three of us ordered Original Large Fried Chicken (Spicy) for only P145 with drinks already. Pretty reasonably priced especially to those chicken lovers out there who wants to try it! Well, on the side of the fried chicken which was sprinkled with 'too' much chili powder on top just for it to become spicy, was a small portion of rice. (Yes, I was disappointed and kind of irritated with the amount of chili powder put in. Thankfully, their gravy matched with the fried chicken.) At first, I thought that the cup of rice wasn't enough to fill my hunger. However, I was wrong. I must say that it was a heavy meal wherein finishing it was difficult than expected. Discovering that the fried chicken was too breaded and dry, the pleasure of eating slowly turned into the need of consuming just for the sake of it not being wasted.

It’s okay for a first timer like me to just try it. But frankly, there is really nothing special with it. It's just that it's extremely affordable and worthy due to their generous servings. And maybe, that's the reason why it's spot-on. So next time I come over in here, I might just try something else that may please my appetite. Hopefully!

The chicken is bigger than my face. 128514 My friend and I tried Hot Star before we walked going to Starr's.

We ordered their BBQ fried chicken with rice and drink for P145 I think? The rice serving is small, but it's fine for me cause I'm not a rice person. My friend, however, ordered two more cups for her. 128522

The chicken is newly fried, tasty for me and I don't know why we could taste some cinnamon. 128522 Oh, their spicy version of BBQ isn't really spicy-- they just sprinkled some chili powder. Thought it was a chicken fillet but nope, it has a bone part.

Giving it three stars. Not bad? Hehe.

Their drinks are heaven sent!

Tried their fish burger and their chicken too. Oh, and their chicken skin. Everything's worth the price in terms of size and taste. 128077

Will definitely go back. 128517

Size of the chicken is really massive! Hahaha however, there's nothing really special with it and it's too breaded. Serving of rice is too small but because of the chicken's size you will really feel full already hehe gravy is too watery but atleast it's not tasteless. I don't like their black gulaman..it really tastes weird (maybe because of too much artificial flavoring?) Their fish fillet was surprisingly good! All in all our experience in eating here was ok :)

Hot Star is known for their big fried chicken breast that won't cost one too much. However, the chicken for me was too breaded and bland. The serving of the rice was too little, and as well as the side dish. For the drink, I found the black gulaman that I ordered too sweet. Every single thing that I ordered has too much of something, which is upsetting. I would have to say I didn't get my money's worth. Sorry 128532

Ordered their bestseller. Just ok, nothing special. A bit too sweet for me. And the coating felt artificial inside my mouth. Not keen on going back.

I've been wanting to try this out for the longest time, and luckily I had the chance to have dinner here the other night! I ordered the Large Crispy Fish with rice and drink (Php 145), while the BF ordered the original version of the chicken in spicy (Php 145 with rice and drink).

Serving time took sooooo long. We placed our orders at 7:10pm, and our orders were served past 7:30pm. They said that the crispy fish took some time to cook, so I don't think I'll be ordering that next time. This really made me take away one star from an otherwise good experience here.

However, taste-wise, it was good! My fish was coated in butter batter prior to cooking, and it was seasoned with salt and pepper to taste. The gravy paired with it wasn't overwhelmingly savory, so it was a nice touch to the overall taste of the dish. The spicy chicken of the BF was also yum yum! I'm not a big fan of spicy food though, and it may have been a bit too spicy for my liking.

Servings are HUGE and we had to take out our leftovers. I must say that this fast food joint is really sulit for people on a student budget :)

*late post*

When we went in, the smell reminded me so much of the time when I was in Taiwan, and I was told this did come from there. 128516

I ordered blue lemonade and chicken skin (45php). The chicken skin was good, and when I asked them to not put sauce they did. 128077

I like how the place is arranged and how they designed it. The staff were also courteous & attentive to my request. 128077

’ve known about Hot Star when it first opened near Mall of Asia. How could I not?? People were raving about how big the chickens were and how sulit they were and that it came from Taiwan. Sadly, I never got the chance to try it because it wasn’t geographically desirable. Since it wasn’t geographically desirable, being the dory that I am, I forgot about it until it opened in Katipunan.

Just before Christmas break started, I decided to ask the Hunger Buster team if they wanted to try Hot Star since I’ve been dying to eat there for as long as I can remember. It was actually our second attempt since we couldn’t find any parking when we first went there so we decided to try another restaurant instead. Everything was perfect that night; we were all free and we didn’t have to hurry since we didn’t have any bazaar scheduled and I get to try it already with the people dearest to me!

The reason why I never noticed Hot Star because it was located on the second floor across KFC. The system is that of a fast food chain wherein pay-as-you-order and self-service systems apply.

Orders are not served immediately. There is another “window” where you get your orders.

The place is surprisingly spacious. I say that it is environmentally friendly to students because it can serve as a study place and a hang-out place at the same time. This can also be a tambayan place for dormers especially if they are tired of the cafeteria food and would like to have a different ambience. The place is well-lit and tables can cater to huge groups.

I love that they have a gravy station because if you’re like me, who puts sauce in almost everything, this station is truly important.

Original Large Fried Chicken (with rice and drinks: P145)
My order. I always opt for the classic one because that is when you know if the establishment really offers some good stuff. The chicken was literally bigger than my face! They weren’t kidding on how big it was! The gravy and the chicken were a perfect match. I love the crispiness and the tenderness of the chicken. I was amazed by how tender it was considering it was the breast part of the chicken. As I go through my meal, I realized that I kind of felt tired eating it. I wasn’t that full yet but the taste started to sink in. There was that umay factor. True enough, I wasn’t able to finish my chicken; I was already halfway through it that I decided to eat the chicken and leave the coating as it was pretty much the reason why I couldn’t finish it.

I paid additional P25 for the black and white gulaman crush. It may seem like an ordinary drink for some especially since we all know how it tastes like, but it was truly refreshing. I don’t mind having it everyday. The taste and aroma of the gulaman are very apparent especially since it was crushed. It gets better as the ice continues to melt since it becomes sweeter.

BBQ Large Fried Chicken (with rice and drinks: P160)
I was a bit disappointed by the amount of barbeque sauce smeared into the coating of the chicken since I was expecting the entire chicken would be coated with the sauce.

Crispy Large Fried Chicken (with rice and drinks: P145)
The only difference between this and the original is that it is crispier.

My initial observation on the food and place is that it is very much student-friendly since it is obvious that they can cater to large groups and this is important especially during hellweek since people will be group studying. I consider their dishes very filling but not really affordable. The chicken is thinly sliced and there was more coating than meat. Reaching that umay factor also made me realize that it students will definitely be full and can be fooled by the coating of the chicken. Don’t get me wrong; I wouldn’t say that I wouldn’t come back for it anytime soon, but if you were to make me choose between this and Jollibee, I would still opt for the bee. Nevertheless, I really liked the Black and White Gulaman Crush and if you were to make me choose among the three I would still opt for the classic ones (Original and Crispy). Adding P15 for the barbeque sauce is a total rip off. Maybe next time when I come back, I will try the Black and White Gulaman Sundae :)

It is no secret that I love fried chicken. I love it so much that I wouldn't mind having it at least once a day, if it came down to it. Unhealthy, I know, but who could resist the temptations of a perfectly fried chicken, with its golden brown, crisp skin, and soft meat that's a little moist from its own juices? I know I can't.

Already anticipating the lack of parking at lunch time, Ramon L and I walked from school to here. True enough, it was a good think we walked because there was no available parking. The entrance is at the back and up the stairs.

They have a pretty simple and straightforward menu. I ordered the Crispy Large Fried Chicken (Php 110, additional Php 35 for rice and a drink). Mon had the Original Large Fried Chicken (Php 110, additional Php 35 for rice and a drink). I had Blue Lemonade for my drink, while Mon upgraded to a combination of Black Gulaman and Almond Ice Crush. I don't know exactly how much more that cost, but I think it was only a few more pesos.

While waiting, they give you a buzzer with a cute sticker on it. The "open mouth" design on the sticker is also seen on the walls. Everything is pretty much self-service here, so you pick up your order at the designated counter when your buzzer lights up.

It is as people say. The chicken is bigger than the average palm, but don't be fooled into thinking its boneless (I did). In comparison, the order of rice seems like half a cup, and you'll be tempted to order more if you want to eat it with your chicken. Honestly, I didn't really like it. The meat was thin, while the breading was thick. At one point, I removed the breading to get more of the chicken, but it wasn't satisfying either way. It was a tasteless, oily chicken, and it was only the rice gravy that made it better, if only slightly. I only ate a small portion of mine and then I gave it Mon to finish, who in turn, let me try his own chicken. His was only slightly better than mine.

At one point, I needed to go the restroom and both the restrooms in the building were maintained terribly. It stank, and there was water on the floor and on the toilet seat... I know Hot Star doesn't manage the bathrooms in the building, but Jesus, I decided to hold it in until I got to Regis. It was that bad.

Anyway, I can already say I've tried it, and I'm done with it. Forever.
