Chief Lapu-Lapu (1491-1542) ... was a ruler of Mactan Island , in the Visayas ( Cebu Island Area )

Philippines 🇵🇭 regard him as the first Filipino Hero ... ‘cause he was the first native to resist Spanish colonisation of the Philippines

As on 27th April 1521 ... when explorer Ferdinand Magellan , with 3 boatloads of Spaniards & 20 boatloads of Cebuanos sailed over to Mactan Island , to help a friendly chief , against Lapu-Lapu ( local island Chief ) & his men , armed only with native weapons & shields defended themselves against Spanish Lancers & bows & arrows , as the invading Spaniards & Cebuanos were driven back to their boats ... not before the Spanish Leader Magellan , met death in the hands of Lapu-Lapu

Also at least 14 other Spaniards & around 150 native warriors were killed

Now on Mactan Island , on what is believed to be the exact spot where Magellan fell & died , now stands impressive monuments in honor of the Lapu-Lapu & the gallant explorer Mangellan ... in a large tourist spot ... this park has free entrance

It was ok. I mean... Who wouldn't be proud of the first Philippine hero? 128516 I am very happy I can now truly say that I am a resident of the Lapu-Lapu City. 128516128516128516 The -1 127775 is because of the people "manning" the entrance to the shrine who ask for "entrance fee" but the amount is your own discretion. 128528 If you're a big tipper, he'll turn on the lights. Otherwise, you'll have a scary walk in the park. 128528128528128528

Was surprised to see that the shrine is here is quite tiny. The ones in Manila and laguna are much more impressive (size-wise). Although I guess it's a good thing to see since this is the original site of Lapu Lapu and magellan's famous encounter.

The Lapu-Lapu shrine is a 20 metres (66 ft) bronze statue in Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines, erected in honor of Lapu-Lapu, a native leader who defeated Spanish soldiers led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the 1521 Battle of Mactan.... Guess everyone knows this chapter of the Philippine history
