Spent a few days here with my son. Loved the penthouse/suite accommodation because it had enough space for my son to play in. Beds were comfortable, bathroom was clean and spacious enough (with hot water, of course)... The penthouse is actually perfect for a family or barkada getaway. Price is not bad at all (equivalent to an overnight stay at the Marco Polo for single/double occupancy).
Legaspi is so convenient because there are awesome restos as soon as you step out of the hotel doors (a cafe, bar, dampa, dessert place, etc.). It is in a quaint compound of restos with a private ancestral house at the center of it all (the owners' place). Doesn't feel like you are in busy Davao city when you stay here. You can take time to sit and read in one of the outdoor cafe tables. Friendly to smokers as there is a smoking area by the center of the quadrangle (unlike in hotels, you have to walk a bit before you get to the smoking area... Davao City anti-smoking ordinance). Check out photos on losttsinelas.blogspot.com -- update: Kusina Selera has been re-interiored and renamed Don--- argh! mental block right now!!! But very nice dark wood and beige interior with a lot of Davao history (photos on the wall show the old city) and there's an acoustic trio/band on weekends (Fridays) here.
Breakfast at the former Selera is yummy (sorry I can't recall the name of the place right now). Served between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
From time to time there is an eat-all-you-can at the dampa in the same compound.
This place is a stone's throw away from Gaisano mall, a local church, and other nice hole-in-the-wall places like a leather store, the name of which escapes me as well right now! Agh!!!! Anyway, you'll know what I mean when you get there because it's a block away and they make custom-fit leather boots, shoes, etc.
It's close to Apo View Hotel so if you want to try other restos and bars, you just hop and skip to the next hotel.
Legaspi, for me, would be the best option to pricey hotels in Davao since it gives you a sense of being on a real vacation.
Compared to budget hotels, and I have tried Green Meadows for that (which has awesome rooms and great prices for dorm-type and single/double room occupancy wth very nice amenities), Legaspi's location and nearby, quality places to see and discover make the difference.
Legaspi is a good place to take a break at from the hustle and bustle of Davao City even if you are a local. The restos offer a good variety of yummy dishes to choose from.
