Pricier as compared to Yabu, but good food and superb ambience!

Their katsu was perfectly made with the right flavor and tenderness. Put that with the unlimited cabbage, soup, and fruits you get the perfect Katsu experience.

I was just at Maisen... last week? 128514 But since I got the chance to dine alone while waiting for coding to be lifted + my sister, I decided to finally give Maisen's KATSUMABUSHI SET a try! 128077🏼

Ok, so what is this tongue twister katsu set... 128514

Katsu/mabushi set comprises of the following:
127834 a bowl of flavored rice topped with bite size katsu
127859 onsen tamago
127862 dashi sauce
127845 wasabi, sesame seeds and chives for additional seasoning

How to eat it:
127860 Scoop out the rice and a piece of katsu from the bowl and place it in your rice bowl. You can try to eat the rice and a bite of the katsu as is already since the rice already has some sauce and it's topped with dried seaweed! 128525
127860 Add wasabi, sesame seeds or the chives in for additional flavoring. (I skipped this cos I'm not really a fan of any of these with rice)
127860 Pour the dashi sauce into the bowl for added flavor. If you pour lots of it, it would feel like you're eating congee or ochazuke*. I really liked the dashi sauce so I poured lots of it. Hehehe!! 128541

Overall, I loved this set! It was different but it felt so Japanese! And it's so unique! 128077🏼 Sad thing about this set is that it doesn't come with my favorite miso soup... 128532 So I just ordered for an extra miso soup... For an additional 30 pesos, you get UNLI MISO SOUP. 128561 That's not a bad deal!!! 128525

Friday's always a struggle.. choosing where to eat.

I've been curious about the Katsumbashi set but I haven't been able to order that yet. Hehe. Maybe one day when I dine by myself. So I opted for the Tenderloin Katsu Set.

Unli rice, cabbage and miso soup (10084️)!! Sadly, I wasn't able to maximize the free refills because I had late breakfast. 128532

Service during this visit was pretty great. The waiters and waitresses were attentive to who needs what refills. 128077🏼 Plus points!

I wonder why we don't get tired of eating katsu... 128514

This is I think my second visit to Maisen with my officemates for lunch. 128514 I got the usual 120g katsu set. I don't usually refill the rice, but I ask for tons of miso soup and some cabbage. 128513 Miso soup addict here 128587🏻

Though sometimes asking for refills can take some time. It's not always consistently fast.

I ordered their cheese minced pork katsu and I definitely enjoyed it. The ratio of cheese to pork to the breadings was just right. It exuded the perfect crispiness and cheesiness that I wanted. Will definitely be back.

Since Yabu is my default katsu set meal And last saturday it was jam packed i decided to try this place. :)

I ordered Chicken katsu set. :)

After i ordered, they served cold tea and i looked for the sesame seed ( to kill my waiting time ). but i look at their sauce and the seeds was included. I tried to taste their sauce it was good but I prefer yabu.

My chicken katsu arrived! Mmmmmm. it was thick and flavorful. But the presentation is nah. They don't have brown rice. :(

The ambiance is good and relaxing. But their customer service is slow. :( but some of their servers are gwapo. Haha. Plus point. :) hehe.

Loved the kurobuta tenderloin set and this salad (pic). Loved how supple, flavorful and thick this katsu was! It wasn't oily and the breading was just right. Plus the serving is just right for a girl with an appetite bigger than her. Truly a game changer for all the other tonkatsu houses! The salad we had was really good as it was really fresh and had very oriental flavor. It did had fragrantly notes but I couldn't pick out what was giving off that flavor, might not be for everyone though 128513. Still not trading Yabu completely but definitely loving this one and coming back to try some more!

When Maisen opened their first branch at Makati, I am grateful. Considering it as one of the best Tonkatsu place in Tokyo, you can expect quality katsu for you then. So I tried these little cheese katsu that they have and they're great! Awesome actually. With the right amount of cheese that's perfect for their katsu sauce, then you have it. As usual for a katsu place is their cabbage serving, and some fruits. I like their dressing as well; the peanut something. What's also great about their menu is that they have katsu sandwiches and these special maisen bowl which is unique. One of my friends tried that one. They also have chicken karage and the usual type of katsu. Basically, their menu is limited to anything katsu related. They have nice staffs, however the service is a little slow and the place is small. It can be crowded in the evening and loud sometimes, so be sure to be there earlier than the peak hours. Overall, it's a great katsu experience for me!

My go to katsu place here in Manila. First tried Maisen in Tokyo. I will never forget how heavenly that perfectly fried piece of pork was. When I knew that Maisen was opening here, I had mixed feelings because usually when an imported restaurant brand is brought here the quality really degrades but i was happy that Maisen was kept at an acceptable level when compared to the original home quality in Japan. My factors to determine if a katsu is great is what you see and can taste. These factors include breading of the katsu, juiciness of the meat, texture/temperature of the cabbage, dressing for the salad, the smoothness of the soup, quality of the rice, taste of the katsu sauce and most important probably the affordability of the set. Comparing all other katsu restaurants here in our country, I can say that Maisen has surpassed all factors that's why Maisen is the best for me. I recommend the Kurobuta Set. It's a bit pricier but worth it. The regular katsu set is great as well and very affordable. You are really getting a lot for what you are paying for.

Finally, Maisen!!!!

Eversince they opened last year, I’ve been wanting to eat here. I would always always ask my family if we can try this but we would normally end up eating somewhere else. Also, the fact that the reviews are mixed, some says it's the best katsu while some thinks it's just the same with Yabu or Yabu is way better. These made me question myself, do I really want to eat here? Haha. But because of the same people saying these things, it just made me more curious. 128550

When my aunt from Cebu visited Manila again for work, I suggested we try this place since she hasn’t tried any katsu place yet and there are very limited Katsu places in Cebu. So for our dinner, we went straight here. The place was not that full so we didn’t have to wait for us to be seated. I was surprised to see that the area inside was just small, I was expecting a big space but there were just around 6 or 7 tables inside. And it felt kinda crowded and we can hear what the other tables are talking about 128517 but when we started eating, wala na.. Yung focus nasa food na!! 128518128539

Before we went here, I already know what I wanted to try. The Kurobuta and the Katsumabushi set. 128513128513 Seeing pictures online, I assumed that serving was already big enough for the 3 of us so I didn't ordered anything else.. but my aunt wanted more so we added an order of the Tofu Salad and an ala carte order of the Chicken Karaage. #DiKamiGutom 128514128514

Kurobuta Tenderloin Katsu Set
- The “must try”. You can’t just eat here and not try the best katsu set. That is according to our server. The pork tenderloin was indeed tender and tasty. What I enjoyed the most was the special apple sauce specifically made for this. I liked how it made the already tasty tenderloin even better. Also, no katsu experience would be complete without the unlimited cabbage and dressing!! I would always always ask for a refill. Not just once, not twice, but thrice! Hihi! 128523 Plus the fruits are unlimited, as well. Hello, unlimited refill of the uber sweet and yummy watermelon and pineapple! AHHHHH!!! ♥

If you really pay attention while tasting this, you’ll see the difference (how it is super better in terms of the taste…. and price!! hahaha). The pork, tender and tasty. And the breading is not too heavy. But if you like any katsu, the normal basic Katsu loin/tenderloin set is already good. Save the extra money and buy the Katsumabushi Set and an ala carte order of the Chicken Karaage. 128521

Katsumabushi Set
- Ahhhh, our favorite! Another must try! 128513 But this is the must must try! You can skip ordering the Kurobuta and just order this one. Bite-size tenderloin katsu chops with Onsen Tamago and Dashi Stock. There is a special way of eating this. In a separate bowl, you get some rice, then the katsu chops, and then you pour the stock and the onsen tamago. You can also adjust the taste to your liking by adding the ingredients provided – Wasabi, Onion Leeks and Sesame seeds. This was something different and we really enjoyed it! Sarap!!!! 128076🏼

Tofu Salad
- Though we already have the unlimited cabbage, we still opted to try the Tofu Salad. At first, we thought that we wouldn't be able to finish this but we did haha! Greens + Tofu + Okra + Tomatoes + Young Corn. Add a lot of sesame dressing to enjoy one good salad! 128513

Chicken Karaage
- If there’s any dish that surprised us the most, this would be it. Crispy juicy fried chicken! This is definitely part of my top 5 chicken karaages. For just 170 pesos, we didn’t expect the serving size to be this generous. SOBRANG SULIT!!!! If you won’t be eating rice, you can just get the ala carte version since it is also served with cabbage. 128513

For just the 3 of us, I think we kind of ordered a lot. But we still finished everything because we really liked it! Really good and yummy!!! Will we come back? YES YES!! But at least now we know what and what not to order. 128513128521

Service was really good. Without us asking, they would refill our water and/or hot tea. The fruits, ahhh they might have seen how we were enjoying it that when we finished it, they gave us a bigger bowl with more fruits right away hahaha. And they have wifi here (connection's fast)!! 128521128077🏼

Another super late post :D
Treated our good friend here on her birthday.
Place is a bit small so we had to wait for a little while before we got seated.
I almost ordered their kurobuta katsu set but decided to try one one of their Maisen specials, the Pork Sukiyaki set.
Now normally sukiyaki has beef on it but I liked that they used tenderloin katsu which was so tender and yummy and because pork is after all their specialty. The soup had just the right kind of sweetness and I loved it so much I had to order extra soup128077128077
A bit expensive though but it was worth it and it comes with unlimited rice, miso soup and fruits!

Love my chicken katsu set 128523though I had to remove the breading. The service was great too, as they were all attentive and encouraging ("more cabbage? How about miso or rice" 128514)

Being an avid tonkatsu lover, I knew one day I would eventually dine at Maisen. Operated by the Bench group, this Japanese restaurant's selection of katsu sets vary from pork (porkloin, tenderloin, Kurobota, and minced), chicken, and veggies, with unlimited side dishes (rice, cabbage, fruits, pickled veggies, and miso soup) included.

Maisen's air conditioned dining space in Greenbelt 5 has little room for movement. My mom and I were almost elbow-to-elbow with the diners on the next table, and I could hear the conversations in every table (chismoso kasi ako. Lol). Moreover, there were tiny flies all over the area. One even landed on my rice, so I had it changed. The servers were very attentive and courteous though.

Mother dear wanted to order the Chicken Katsudon Set, but that didn't have unlimited cabbage, so she opted for the Chicken Katsu Set. I, on the other hand, got the 120g Tenderloin Katsu Set. Their katsu is perfectly cooked, with a crispy exterior and juicy, soft interior. However, it was poorly spiced for my taste. I rarely use the tonkatsu sauce provided on the side, but this time I had to. Eaten alone, the tenderloin tonkatsu was bland. But hey, with the sauce, it tasted really good.

Overall, from a scale of 1 to Yabu, which is still the basis of all katsu restaurants in my book, Maisen scores a solid above average. The cramped space, annoying flies, and perfectly cooked but under-spiced tonkatsu are compensated by their affordable prices and accommodating waitstaff.

Tried cheese minced pork!! I loved this one! The meat is full of flavor and tender plus the cheese10084️. It feels like the meat is melting in your mouth. Definitely a must try! If you will ask me how is maisen compared to Yabu, I cannot really say which is better because it depends on what your order. But if you're planning to dine here, you should try their cheese minced pork! Service is great , staffs are attentive. The set comes with unli cabbage, miso soup , rice and cold tea plus they are very generous when it comes to serving :) The place is quite small but there are seats outsides , don't worry because the ambience is nice :)

This one opened just last August. By far, the katsu place I liked the most. Yabu would always be my basis for rating katsu places. The serving was big. The meat was flavorful and very tender. We didn't even order the Kurobota! I also liked that they had two sauces which you can spice up on your own. Although my companion lamented the missing sesame seeds. On my part, they're not missed. Was never really a fan of those sesame seeds. The waiters and waitresses were also very attentive, which was a big brownie point for me.
