Mario’s has recently celebrated its 45th anniversary, and I’m glad that team kaladkarin has been invited to celebrate it with them. For those who have dined here, there’s no doubt they’ve only experience nothing but the best from this place. Mario’s has been the restaurant of choice when it comes to meetings, birthday celebrations, romantic dates— especially politicians and celebrities.

That’s definitely one of the challenges the restaurant faces, the restaurant is already known to only certain customer group (the upper, aged ones). It’s a good thing we could represent that millennial group so to share with the group our experience.

Before we started enjoying finest eats from the place, we were introduced to Mario’s history...
Mario’s originally started in Baguio, 1967 with couples Mario and Nenuca Benitez. Mario was a sales person at Singer back then. They loved Baguio for its chilly wind and that it’s not too crowded. With that, Mario decided to put up a restaurant of his own just in case he would be reassigned to another area, he would just simply resign and stay at Baguio.

Very little experience on the food business, their first menu came from Mario’s mom— am mix of Filipino and Spanish Cuisine. One of those was Mario’s callos and lengua. It was a small start for the Benitez, good thing they received a lot of good advices from their friends over at Manila who also owns restaurants. From there, Nenuca worked inside the kitchen while Mario utilized his sales skills to do PR with their customers.

Then martial law was rather a good turn about for the restaurant. Since traveling abroad was banned, most of the travelers ended up staying in Baguio. There were only a few restaurants back then, and most of it requires membership. The people flocked Marios.

Soon avid customers and investors recommended them to open in Manila, which they did not hesitate to do. Then there comes Mario’s Makati branch. However, as the area became the red light district more and more, Nenuca decided to relocate it into another place. Then in the 1980s, they opened the Tomas Morato branch. Mario’s Tomas Morato Branch was one of the first restaurants along the strip. Then the spot just became livelier and livelier, and obviously Mario’s became one of the well loved restaurant around.

Now that Nenuca is in charge of the place, she made sure that quality stays. She still ensures the food preparation inside the kitchen is superb, eventually visiting the table side to check on the customers, and ensuring the satisfaction of their servers, because Nenuca knows it her care for the servers will emulate in their service.

That day, we tried the Sunday Buffet that runs from 11am to 2pm.

Senior, kids 7 y/o and below - PhP901.60

128525Baked oysters - It’s one of the mainstays here, i love to eat this by itself, the garlic-butter tastes good, add a squeeze of lemon if you want.

128525Seafood Paella - this is one of a kind because they use Japanese rice on it.

Caesar Salad - too bad i was not able to try this because i did not know that this is being served at your tables side! 128518
The make your own salad is available in the buffet table, but I heard their Caesar Salad is really something. Do ask for assistance if you wish to have a serving and it will be served at your table side. The caesar salad is also available on weekdays @305PhP for regular and @239.64PhP for petite.

Cochinillo - found at the rotisserie, this is cooked perfectly, it’s tender to eat.

128525 Roast Beef - the mushroom gravy is good to go with this tender meat

128525 Turkey - i love staying at the meat section, this white meat is an alternative for your chicken cravings.

128525 Creme Brulee - a mainstay, also popular in the dessert section, these are really in demand! It’s not super sweet, and the dessert literally melts in your mouth!

128525 buko pandan - this is something new in the dessert section, i like it because the flavor is there, the coconut meat is abundant, the mixture is thick and filling.

128525 chocolate fondue - dip it with fresh fruits and marshmallows that’s also served in the buffet table. It comes in milk and white chocolate.

128525 Mango Jubillee @408.48PhP
Yes, it does not come with the buffet, but we were grateful we were able to try this one. This is also served table side, the server will prepare it for you with the flambé and all. The preparation was awesone, and the taste? Super perfect! The mangoes and bananas with the caramel and vanilla ice cream just just harmonizes well!

Also, try their cakes.
Canonigo - some say it’s a Filipino version of the Ile Flottante, but it’s a Spanish dessert made of sweet, fluffy meringue with custard sauce. It’s actually good to pair with coffee.

They also have carrot cake, blueberry cheesecake and toffee sans-rival!

It’s too unfortunate that they close down after 2pm for their cleaning and restocking for the dinner service. I suggest they open a portion of the cafe for afternoon coffee and teatime. Considering the number of good desserts that they have.

Parking is not a problem, because they actually have valet services for free. The place could accommodate about 100 pax. There’s a nice comfort room as well on the inner left side of the place when you enter. Ambiance is more on formal, but this is where all people go when they reach a certain age 128540

Over all i like the place, although it’s a bit of intimidating, it’s good to try out something like this sometimes. Invite your family here for some service and it will not fail you.

Mario’s is one of the first restaurants built along Tomas Morato in the early 80’s and it’s been there longer than my number of years on Earth! But, what some people might not know is that this restaurant has been in existence since the 1970’s. The original Mario’s was built by couple Mario and Consuelo Benitez in Baguio and their story is absolutely inspiring. They had difficulties early on while they were starting up, they have experienced destruction after Baguio was hit by the devastating earthquake in 1990, and, a fire in 1999 left them with a completely shattered building. But, after more than 4 decades, they’re still here, showing resilience. These are just some of the things I have learned when we got invited to their Sunday Lunch Buffet a few weeks ago.

Mario’s is one of my family’s favorite breakfast places but we seldom visit for lunch or dinner. However, with their Sunday Lunch Buffet, we’ll probably visit often now. My favorites from the spread were Cochinillo, Paella, and Caesar Salad but everything was good.

I guess one of the reasons for Mario’s continued success is their sense of sophistication. Every time I see the restaurant’s façade, I feel like it’s really timeless. Inside, there’s some elegance from the interiors, the table set up, to the service but, you will also feel comfortable while dining.

Isang Linggo na naman ang lumipas, at isang beses na naman kami kumain dito. Busog ako nung pumunta kami dulot ng mabigat na merienda. Dahil dito, kinuha ko ang kanilang Clam Chowder.

New England Clam Chowder

Wala namang bayad.

Iyon na lamang mga binibini't ginoo!

I was in Baguio recently, wish i tried Mario's there just to check the consistency of their dishes across branches. Maybe next time.

Anyway, since i need to lose a bit of weight, been ordering fish dishes here the past Sundays. Today, i got the blue marlin dish. Instead of getting the listed sauces in the menu to serve with my dish, i got the orange bourbon sauce supposedly for the grilled salmon dish. It's still a great combo for me!

My only tip when ordering fish here at Mario's is to ask your waiter which fish was freshly delivered. From there, i just order whichever they suggest.

That's it for now. Take care!

PSA: Mario's will be open tomorrow for lunch and dinner! Their doors won't be open for breakfast though.

I'm a bit sick today so asked for warm water and hot calamansi juice. Calamansi is not listed in their menu, but apparently it's available. When you ask for warm water, they'll serve you warm water. Not lukewarm, but warm. They have pitchers ready for serving.

Our family got a paella for sharing. The picture clearly shows how packed it is. Lots of seafood and served really warm.

That's it for now. Take care everyone and happy Sunday to all of your families! :)

Happy father’s day! #latepost Special events, such as father’s day and mother’s day, are triggers that this place will be packed. Good thing, since we frequent this place often, every Sunday to be exact, is that they reserved seats for our family. The place was bustling when we got there, with two families still waiting to be seated at a little over 8 pm. I think the high traffic took its toll on the waiters as it was quite visible that they were a bit spent but nevertheless were still trying their best.

We all ordered steaks this time around. That is a sign that nobody had a late merienda that day. My favorite from their steaks is the filet mignon, but I got the peppered steak just because I wanted to be simple last Sunday. We were all satisfied with our steaks and each steak order was cooked to perfection (according to our preference).

We don’t usually get dessert, but this was a special day so we got two orders of Mango Jubilee. One of the competitive advantages of their top desserts is that they prepare them in front of you. This gives an opportunity for social media artists out there to snap away and post. The mango jubilee is our favorite dessert from all their options. Its quantity is just right and the combination of the cold ice cream and the hot mango is perfect.

That’s it for now. At sa lahat ng magigiting na ama diyan, nagpupugay ako sa inyo! Stay mahusay!

I’ve been meaning to write this review for ages as my family would often have our weekly dinners at Mario’s. We’re almost a constant fixture in this restaurant that they would usually reserve a table for the 6 of us. What I absolutely love about Mario’s is how well we can converse in the restaurant despite fiery presentations of culinary prowess (pictured above), hearty birthday songs sung by waiters to unsuspecting celebrants and throngs of people eager to stuff themselves with Spanish fare. At the end of the day, my main goals for eating out are the conversations, the stories we share, studies and articles we can pick apart and apply in our lives and ultimately to deposit in each other’s emotional bank account. Appreciating good food is always a tool for that, but not necessarily the bottomline.

I would highly recommend their Caesar Salad (P260) because their salad dressing is the best and their Oysters Rockefeller (P350) is their signature appetizer. For Steak, I would always order Peppered (P630) because of its strong flavor. For dessert, I would go for the Mango Jubilee (P375)– vanilla ice cream topped with brandy infused mango. Plus, the showmanship of preparing it is pretty cool.

On the issue with parking along Tomas Morato, they always have the valet service available so that you can immediately take your seats. They sometimes have a singer and pianist available on special occasions. Its all pretty fancy. I highly, highly recommend this place! #henrysinstaxgiveaway

As I’ve said in a previous entry, we almost always eat here on Sundays. It has reached a point wherein they reserve a table for our family every Sunday without us prompting them. Given our loyalty to this place, we also get high quality service. Although, I notice with other customers that they provide great service as well.

Since we go here every Sunday, we practically know the ins and outs of the menu. With this being said, during our last visit, we all noticed that there was something new with the menu. They updated the chef’s specials, seen on the first page of the menu, by taking out some dishes and including new ones.

My dish of choice that night was something I haven’t tried before which was the Three Mushroom with Black Truffle Oil for 295 Php. When it arrived, since I didn’t read the menu well, I was surprised that it had plenty of bacon bits in it. I liked the pasta very much, with the bacon being a nice accent to the dish. The serving was plentiful, and I wasn’t able to finish it. I had the rest packed for takeaway and reserved it for breakfast the next day.

In the spirit of trying something new that night, I urged my siblings to try the dessert crepe instead of our usual mango jubilee. We got one order of the dessert crepe. It was prepared in front of us. It was not your usual crepe, and it was served in 4 pieces. I liked it very much, and I thought it was good for 4 people already. For a crepe it was quite heavy and filling. So I guess this visit of ours was a jackpot in terms of value for money.

My other favorites in case you are wondering would be their filet mignon and blue marlin, although always ask the waiter if the fish was just delivered to ensure the optimal quality experience.

That’s it for now. Take care everyone!

Ordered the oyster rockefeller for our appetizer. It's a bit pricey for a first jobber like me but value for money-wise it's 128076🏼. (Of course i ordered it with my family). Looks good, tastes even better. It works for me even without the calamansi.

Since we often go here, a good tip when ordering their blue marlins or salmons is to ask the waiter when the goods arrived. If they arrived recently, or even better the day before, the taste of their fish meals shoot up. :) so i only order their fish meals only when i find out that the fish delivery occurred recently. :) haha

If you want quiet time in this place, better to go during dinnertime as sunday lunchtime is when their buffet is available which usually comes with birthday celebrations or huge reunions.

Anyway, that's it. Take care everyone! :)

My family goes here every Sunday! Every Sunday! Haha yeah, you can call us men and women of habit. So we have our Sunday dinner here every week mainly because it's a very conducive place for talking and catching up. It's really quiet, not crowded. Very relaxing. Also, they have very good service (but that might be because we're there every Sunday, yes i know i won't say it again)

Food is great. To be honest i think i've tried everything on their menu already except for the drinks haha and i was never disappointed. I guess that's one the reasons we keep going back as well, food is good. My go to orders would be the filet mignon and the caesar salad. :) yum! Every now and then, if we're not yet full, we order the mango jubilee which they prepare in front of you. :)

Never had problems with parking because of their valet service. Usually parking is a problem for tomas morato restaurants.

Anyway, it's a very nice restaurant which i recommend to you guys. Could be considered a date place for special occasions :)

Take care everyone! :)

Went back despite the fact that j was disappointed before and was glad they picked up their game. The buffet choices were limited but very good. We went away stuffed. The only x marks they earned this time was the desserts and coffee. For some strange reason, the cakes were tasteless or a bit off. Can't just Tim it down at the moment. The coffee, sadly, was tasteless. Still, I went there for meal and the meal dos not disappoint. I hope they keep on improving to get back to where they were a decade ago.
