Matutinao River is considered as one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines. Canyoneering is a must try activity. It's a great place to start for newbies on trekking and hiking.

I always watch Drew Arellano's Byahe ni Drew show to get ideas where to go in the country. I was amazed to discover that there's such activity in Cebu which is "canyoneering". By watching it, I definitely want to experience the fun, free fall and enjoyment. We booked at Ester's cottages in Moalboal and her son, Michael is one of the guide in canyoneering. We went island hopping in the morning then canyoneering in the afternoon. This activity is very safe. Lifejackts and helmets are provided in this trip. After a 10mins motorbike, just a minute walk you will hear people screaming that will makes you ro think twice. The first jump around 10teet is just an appetizer to the adventure. Kuya guides are so helpful and nice. There's a lot of walking than swimming and jumpings to reach Kawasan falls where lunch is served. The thing I just noticed that we don't have any orientation at the beginning. So I have no idea what are the proper things to do during the activity but God is good that there are no accidents happened. Total adventure costs 1500. Tip: wear rubbershoes instead of aquashoes because there are a lot of walking that made my aqua shoes fall apart Also bring some courage and endurance to finish this activity. I'll do this again if my soul lets me.128076🏼 #50ksummergiveaway

Let me start this review with this " The struggle is real but the experience was surreal"

I know you've heard this heart pumping adventure or have seen it on your instagram feed. I am so blessed that I am living on this island that has a lot to offer from beaches, peaks, falls and now canyons.

Approximately 113 km South of Cebu lies a coastal town of Alegria. It is the jumpstart of the Canyoneering adventure. If you plan to commute from Cebu City, you can catch a bus from the South Bus terminal that depart every 30 minutes and travel time most likely at 3 to 4 hours ( Fares: 100 or above.. not quite sure but on that range) We depart from the city at 6am by car and arrived in Alegria close to 9am and that includes havin breakfast at Carcar city. If you plan to have this adventure, i recommend to book your guide ahead of time in order to communicate with them on where to meet (ill put the contact details of our guide below). It is advisable for commuters to depart from the city at around 4am to 5am coz the adventure will start at 9am.

You have two options as where to meet with the guides:

OPTION 1: The guide will meet you at Kawasan falls entrance near the church just beside the national highway at the Badian town especially the ones with personal vehicles for them to park the car properly since it is also the Exit area of the canyoning adventure. Chosen Operator/guides near there will let you wear the gears (life vest and safety helmet optional: wet shoes). After a quick orientation, they will let you ride a habal-habal (fares may be included or not on a package but it cost 50 to 75) to take you to Alegria (the jump off point)

OPTION 2: The guide will meet you directly at the jump off area in Alegria like us but trust me the roads are rough. After the adventure, my friend went back to Alegria from Badian to get the car as we waited at the Church in Kawasan falls entrance.

The Canyoning:

It is advisable to have your adventure on a nice and sunny weather condition coz bad weather will result to a stronger water current and it would make your adventure more difficult. There will be guides from the operators and they will be partnering a local guide. The ratio would be 1 guide is to 5 guests.
You will feel the nerves of everyone on first jump. First jump is a 15 feet drop. After the first jump, your nerves will transform into excitement trust me. You will feel accomplished after the first jump. There will be a series of jumping and sliding on canyons with a minimum of 5 ft drop to 10 ft. drop. ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR GUIDE AND BE ATTENTIVE ALL THE TIME (capslock para intense). For persons who dont have a fear of height and a super super super thrill seeker there will be 23 ft., 42 ft., and a 30 ft. drop (last part) but its optional for persons who dont have guts like me LOL. The blue waters were so tempting and a great eye sight. Its as cool as iced water. Haven't seen any fishes in the water ahhahahha. The place was so surreal with all the blue waters and canyons. It is recommended to wear a great grip & thick soles footwear for there will be a lot of sharp edged boulders there. A lot of swimming and backward strokes especially on shallow waters. For someone who doesnt know how to float or swim in waters like me hahaha don't worry coz their life vest were so sturdy and not an ordinary vest (the ones with styro) hehehe. Just trust yourself on a vest and make sure it is locked all the time, you will surely float ahhaha. After 2 to 3 hours of jumping and swimming in the canyons you will reached the end part of canyoneering. You'll know that you reached the end of canyoning coz there will be a few stalls who sell barbecue on that area for your hungry tummy. The last 1 hour will be spent trekking beside the river going to Kawasan falls. If you will not get into traffic ( yes may traffic din sa canyoneering pag yung mga kasama mo or yung na.una sa inyo ay matagal ma conquer yung jump coz of nerves) on canyoneering, you will reach Kawasan falls after 4 hours. You can enjoy swimming also in Kawasan falls when you reach it just inform your guide if san kayo mag part ways. They can leave you in Kawasan falls or make way to the highway with them if ayaw niyo nang mag swimming. Id say it is the most wonderful and heartpumping experience i had so far. This is a must try experience when in Cebu.

Rate per person:
-For now it is 700 php per head, make arrangements with the guide if dalawa lang kayo or ikaw lang mag.isa dahil pwede ka naman i join sa ibang naka schedule.
-currently the two towns (Alegria and Badian) have proposed for a fixed rate of 1,500 per head that includes meals and sorts pero proposal pa lang hindi pa naa-approve between them and the operators.. for me its too pricey if itll be 1,500 php.

Things to bring:
-GoPro camera or waterproof/underwater cam
-Money and Cellphone ( secure it with plastic or waterproof casings) never trust the cheaper ones for phone
-Dry clothes on dry bag (optional)- the guide has a drybag where you can put your few belongings there if you dont have one and also for your money and phone.
-Biscuits or candies if ever magparamdam na si Mr. Gutom

Things to Wear:
-swimwear would be fine but for me a rashguard would be great for cool waters.
-comfortable shorts or you can have leggings beneath your shorts if you're sensitive with wild plants that you'll encounter while trekking
-rubber shoes or wet shoes (no flipflops)

Sidetrips:
-Kawasan falls
-Moalboal beaches (next town after Badian goin back to city)

Operator/Guide we had:
Vertica Outdoor Adventures (you can search them on facebook)
Contact: 09339284244

What to expect after:
Muscle sores hehehe especially on your lower limbs but its all worth it...

Enjoy and have fun canyoning....

Adventures doesn't mean risking your life, at least not always. 128540 kidding!

Judging from the 5 reviews posted prior this, I think you all know most facts you need in doing this activity but let me add MORE based on my trip.

If you are coming from Cebu city, go to the south terminal bus and take ceres bus or whatever bus that will pass alegria. Dont worry because all the bus drivers and conductors know already what you meant and they already have a hint on what you will do. Go their as early as 3am, the ideal. For us, we over slept and we were able to depart cebu city around 6am, arrived their at 10. Travel time is just 4hours but if you'll go later than 6am I think it will be more than the usual time as the towns by the road will be busier by then. Take the aircon bus, you need to have a good seat. Fare is 160php.

Eat a meal, before starting. There is a carenderia along the road which looks decent enough for a good meal or bring a packed lunch with you.

Make sure to go to the tourist desk and write your infos in case of emergency. This will be the point where you will meet your guide if you already have one. Ours was Kuya Hermes, a nice guy, very polite and he surely was very attentive to us. Contact number, 0997-208-8371. We contacted him a day prior he was recommended by a fellow tour guide, which I will introduce soon. Our rate was 800 per pax excluding shoe rental, shower fee and motor bike ride. You can wear your own shoe or slipper as long as it is not slippery. This is the cheapest we can get but am not sure if this will still be the same as I have read that they will be establishing a fixed rate. He brought two more guides along so that 800 you are paying is worth every penny. You will realize it at the end of the trail. 128522

There will be a motorbike ride for just 10-15 minutes depending on the bike type, half of the way going their mainly is unpaved so you better hold tight.

In our case, he dropped us in a sarisari store where you can safely have your bags and other valuables kept. Still, i recommend you to bring one of those floating water proof bags, but please keep your valuables inside another waterproof pouch before you put it in just to make sure. If you dont have one, you can rent from the sarisari store owner.

What else?? The whole experience was surreal. Kung ang syota mo is for keeps I think the whole adventure we had is more than that. Something worth sharing to your grandchildren. 128513

Eto pa, Make sure to start you trek not later than 12. The whole treak is four hours, mahirap na maabutan ng dilim doon.

Busses pass by every 15-30 minutes so better get that first bus you see.

My second time! Canyoneering or Canyoning is considered an extreme activity which uses a variety of techniques to explore a canyon (a deep valley with steep rock sides and often with a stream or river flowing through it) such as walking, climbing, rappelling, spelunking etc. Safety gear is of high importance in this activity. We started at Matutunao/Kanlaon River and exited at Kawasan Falls. There were numerous jumps, (five I think) highest was 30 feet but it was optional. There's another passageway if you choose not to jump there. We didn't! The highest we did was approx 15 feet. At the end of the canyon, is a 2-3 km hike leading to three falls. Four hours of canyoning,my feet almost gave up because we were not using proper foot wear. There were plenty of large and tiny stones that were either sharp or slippery. This experience is really one for the books. So much adrenaline rush. Too beautiful inside. The leaves and trees hugging each other, rock formation, clear waters... ahh I am still in awe! Mother Earth, you are so beautiful!

If you want extreme...go and try canyoneering in Badian. About 6-7 hrs away from the Cebu city by bus 128553 we got the rate from one of the blogs I read, its P800 each but its only canyoneering. If you want to finish until Kawasan Falls there's additional P200 each. It was 3 hours activity and the first jump was about 15-18feet high and normally I dont get scared because I love extreme sports 128522128170 but my son is with us and though he's 14yrs old he will always be my baby. And I was scared for him! But this momma is wrong...my son finished it without tripping or slipping or second thoughts he just kept jumping and sliding and having a blast! 128536 so proud of him! 128077128077128077 the place will amaze you its so beautiful, the water is so clean and cold and you will want to just stay and maybe meditate for few minutes 128512

Cebu has a lot to offer and one of that is the Canyoneering at Matutinao River which is a must-do for every adventurers at heart like me. You will enjoy the 3-4 hours of trekking, climbing, cliff jumping, swimming and frolicking on it's turquoise cold water. You will get to do a lot of cliff jumps from 6ft to 30ft which I enjoyed so much that I had to repeat a lot of jumps. The end point of the canyoneering was the Majestic Kawasan Falls where you can go swimming and rafting. The 65 ft water fall that I wanted to jump from but was not allowed to haha. The canyon at Matutinao River is so beautifully amazing and the experience there is so ecstatic that makes me want to visit Cebu again. This experience is a one of a kind and I will definitely go back and try it again.

Fun fun fun! Downstream canyoneering in Matutinao River, Badian, Cebu. Involves river trekking and jumping waterfalls ranging from 8ft to 20ft. There is no way to go forward but to jump 128513. 7 obstacles all in all. Here you will discover the deep dark secrets of Matutinao River. It is a whole day river trek and we brought our own packed lunch. Remember to waterproof your things and put it in a dry bag.

Difficulty - Hard for me all because I hate all the talunan portion (7 waterfalls !!!) 128563. The group was egging on me coz im always the pinakamatagal tumalon. Tatalon din naman pero holding hands with our guide 128107 lol 128516. Lifevest ✅. The rest of the trek is moderate na.

Get a good competent local guide who knows the river very well. I would recommend mine but he died last year in the same river that he loves so much (+) 128531.

Go during dry summer season. Feb to June 128077128077128077. Too dangerous to go during wet months. The current is strong and water not clear.

*pictured is the 1st hurdle. A 15 ft waterfall 128561128563128561.
