There are times, when vacationing, I try to avoid a resort's restaurant food. One of the main reasons is that, for the most part, resorts can sometimes charge an arm and a leg for their dishes. Now, I don't mind paying if the food is great, but sometimes you have to be tight with your money in order to get the most out of your vacation. That's why, when going to beach resorts, I speak with the local residents to find out where the fishermen stock their fresh catches, also if there are places where you can have those catches cooked for a cheap price. So when in Pagudpud's Blue Lagoon, I make sure that most of our food is cooked at Mekeni Grill.
Early in the morning, 6AM, have a tricycle driver bring you where the fishermen bring their fresh catch. Before restaurants are able to seize those, you have first dibs. Depending on the season, crabs and lobsters' prices range from PHP350-450. With a couple kilos, you can feed up to 4 people. Divide that, you're paying PHP87-112. Sounds good right?
Once you choose the fish or shellfish of your liking, you bring it to Mekeni Grill. There, they will charge you only PHP50, excluding rice, per kilo you hand to them, and they will cook it to your liking. Give them a time when you will eat lunch or dinner, and they will have already prepared your dishes at that exact time, still hot and ready to eat. It's simple, inexpensive and delicious. If you opt not to wake up early to choose the catch, they, too offer carinderia style dishes.
I have been going here the past five years, they have always been great with their service and food.
Vacationing doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay buku bucks for good food. Talk to the locals, they'll be glad to help visitors. I'm very thankful to the residents of Bgry. Balaoi for helping me get around and introducing me to Mekeni Grill.
