After a hard morning's work at Calamba, we headed south to visit Mer-Nel's at Los Banos for a much anticipated (and delayed) lunch. I almost forgot about having rice for lunch and already starting to feel that moist chocolate cake melting in my mouth while traversing the National Road going to LB. The heavy traffic near the UPLB intersection was worsened by politicians using ambulances and arrogant highway patrol motorcycles as escorts. Seeing these future crocs just made my tummy growl much louder than it would on an empty stomach.

Finally, after around 45 minutes of salivating from imagination amidst the artificial election-made traffic jam, we finally reached Mer-Nel's. I think I just awoke from hallucination of eating that sumptuous chocolate cake as we parked the car.

Though it was way past noontime, a lot of people are still lined up at Mer-Nel's cake counter, placing boxes and boxes of orders. For our delayed lunch, we lined up at the meal counter and got ourselves rice meals and bundled our orders with one slice each of Mer-Nel's chocolate cake. Yes, they do serve some of the best rice meals in this part of town.

The chocolate cake was served first (yes, even before the rice meal was served!), and we were just ecstatic! As expected, this chocolate cake is really, really good. Don't be fooled by how simple this cake looks as this one packs a big punch on its taste. Like a knockout, that moist cake will keep you wanting and craving for it as long as you can remember. I had to skip getting a take out box as the fam is on a sugar free diet. And yes, this is definitely a cheat day!

I got myself an order of Salisbury steak served with potato balls and home-style gravy. Despite the size of the steak, it didn't disappoint. I even had to order extra rice just to savor the taste. The gravy and the potato balls are indeed a treat to my hungry, growling tummy.

Mer-Nel's meals are ordered ala fast-dine style (which most restos in the area adapt). I would like to suggest though that Mer-Nel's post some photos of their menu items so customers will be able to appreciate what they will be getting.

Mer-Nel's place is quite huge with multi-purpose rooms that can easily cater to family and corporate gatherings. Great food aside, they do have the facilities that will make every occasion memorable.

Leaving Mer-Nel's Place and seeing the long traffic ahead makes me want to stay longer but we really have to go and brave an even longer traffic to Makati. I'm sure we'll be back here soon. No traffic can stop our craving!

Oo nga naman, isa lang naman talaga ang "VALENTINE" ko. HAHAHA! I've been craving for their chocolate cake and went a bit crazy that I failed to check the dedications on all the cakes I got! Sana hindi mapansin ng napagbigyan. LOOOOL!128541128514

Their chocolate icing is still my favorite with slight hints of condensed milk after each bite. I prefer the cake refrigerated because it doesn't lose its' moistness. SARAP padin! Love the simplicity of this chocolate cake!10084️ Their chocolate chip bun with custard filling tasted great too especially when warmed. We finished the entire pan to give away as pasalubong.128522

Advanced "HAPPY VALENTINE!", guys! Hahahaha!

I'm not really a fan of chocolate cake. It is only Mer-Nel's chocolate cake that I eat. Its chocolate frosting was so rich! I also love the one with the yema/custard filling. Tried their mocha cake way back 2009 and didn't like it because it was soggy. So I always buy just their chocolate cake. Believe me. If you're going to visit Laguna, don't stick with just the usual pasalubong such as buko pie. Try Mer-Nel's chocolate cake! Its decoration is simple but wait until you taste it.

I think this is the only branch that sells their cake in slices. Good thing it's the nearest to my home.

My recent visit's goal is to try their choco-yema cake but it's not available so I settled for the double chocolate cake.

I loooovvee the double chocolate from Mernels! The chocolate icing is thick and layered into the cake. It may be too sweet for some so make sure to let it sit in the fridge for an hour or two to lessen the sweetness level.

Each slice is only 60 pesos so better drop by and try a piece!

We were quite exhausted from our family nature trip at the neighboring Makiling Botanical Garden so we decided to take a heavy merienda at Mer-Nel's.

Espie, quite hungry from the long walk, got Mer-Nel's pansit canton (at P99). The pansit canton is cooked fresh, noodles are not soggy in any way and has farm fresh veggies that go with it. Even noodle-lover Kandyce appreciated the pansit canton so much!

To get something for my hungry tummy, I got Mer-Nel's clubhouse sandwich (in the photo). As you can see from the photo, the serving was very generous - even for a hefty price of only P130.

To try out their coffee (which we usually do at every new foodie place we visit), we ordered two cups of regular brewed coffee (at P49) each. Mer-Nel's also offers a strong cup though costing a bit more at P55. We preferred the regular cup which had quite a strong flavor and enough to wake us up all the way to Alabang.

Who couldn't resist to try Mer-Nel's yema-filled chocolate cake (now at P60)? Since we had already quite "heavy weight" orders, we settled for one slice of the yema-filled cake. The cake will be loved by kids as it is more on the sweet side. The yema filling adds the matching flavor that makes this cake stand out from among the rest.

Our total bill was only P387 and went home with a happy tummy! 128540128540128540

What is life? OH WAIT! Sometimes it's Chocolate Yema Cake from Mernel's!!!

I admit, I have little love with Mernel's chocolate cake until recently. Found out a couple of months back that they are now selling chocolate yema cake. Oh my Geee!!! This lifts their famous dessert to another level!

It's basically the same old chocolate cake that I have already tasted from Mernel's and they just inserted this yummy yema filling in the middle. For some reason, the harmony of their signature thick chocolate icing and the yema filling was so addicting. The yema was done right complementing the sweetness of the chocolate icing.

You might probably complain with the actual cake since it's not moist but for 50 pesos per slice? You might just cut this cake some slack.

This has got to be one of the best tasting chocolate cakes I have eaten. The chiffon was light and moist. The icing tasted yummy.

The best thing about it is that it's really cheap! The 8" round cake only costs 290 pesos!

I got one last weekend and we finished it in less than 24 hours.

Unfortunately, it is only being sold in Los Banos, Laguna. Oh, they do have a branch in SM Calamba, also in Laguna. Hehe!

So, If you are looking for something to bring home from Laguna, you might want to consider getting this instead of the traditional buko pie.

Mer-Nel's Place is a household name in Los Banos, Laguna thanks to their chocolate cake. From a tiny bake shop, MERlie & NELSon's business has grown to a three story building and an extension branch in SM Calamba. My Nanay introduced me to their signature cake, soft (enough) chiffon filled by it's sweet chocolate icing with faint hints of condensed milk. And yes, I can name a few cakes (waaay) better than MerNel's but for P50/slice? I will gladly take a sweet bite.
