Modern Shanghai is the only Chinese restaurant import by The Bistro group of restaurants. Located at the second level of the Entertainment Wing of SM Mall of Asia, they have an unobstructed view of the Manila Bay. They also have a prime spot of the famed Manila Bay sunset. I am pretty sure they also offer their al fresco seats for diners who wants to see the yearly holiday fireworks and the highly competative pyrotechnic competition. The restaurant boasts of intricate wood carvings for wall ornaments and hanging lamps over their lazy susan tables for large groups.

During my visit, we had the pleasure of having the chef of the restaurant join us to explain the varied dishes they have. For starters - we had *Manila's #1 Xiao Long Bao (*according to online lifestyle portal Spot.ph).

To our surprise also had a one on one speed training on how the little morsels of soup dumplings are made. And it was not easy. To be certified, one must undergo a 5 month rigirous training to master the thickness, the amount of filling and proper folds to make a Xiao Long Bao truly exquisite in both taste and presentation. I'd like to think I did good on the rolling part. True enough their Xiao Long Bao was filling, flavorful and add a bit of ginger and soy gives it more depth.

We also had a serving of Pork and Shrimp siomai. I like how they present their version - it has a whole shrimp on top of it. Served next was Shrimp Hakaw. The Hakaw was a mix of shrimp and pork fat which melted into the dumpling giving it an indulgent taste. The shrimp though was minced unlike mosr Hakaws I've tasted which serves theirs with the shrimp whole. Unless, I picked the wrong Hakaw from the steamer basket. Highlight of the appetizers for me was the dessert like Steamed Bun with Preserved Egg Yolk Paste. It was gloriously creamy, take note that this is not the salted egg that is taking over the various social media sites but would very well pass off as one because of it's look. 3 pieces if i recall correctly is 158pesos. Not bad, if you just want some afternoon tea with it.

The mains included - Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, the pork had a crunch and the sauce was perfectly tart. It paired well with the smoky Yang Chow Fried Rice. It was packed with vegetables and bits of meat. A good meal in itself. We also had a serving of Sauteed Sliced USDA Beef with Scallions. This dish is highly recommended. The scallions and beef had equal amounts and the beef was very tender. Soy and hoisin base glistened the meat beckoning my name. I practically finished off the plate. The Birthday Noodles was good but nothing impressive. It was a bit dry though, it was not the saucy birthday noodles that we are used to. The Sauteed String Beans with Minced Pork and Chili was the perfect vegetable dish. It wasn't spicy though despite having 'Chili' in it. The String Beans had a crunch and was fresh. I'd I appreciate though if they took the effort to remove the strings from the side of the beans. It was very irritating when eating the dish.

For the drinks I had a serving of the Lily Which had lychee, pomelo bits. It was refreshingly good. Overall, service was quick one of the few The Bistro Group restaurants that has a good service. Food is celebratory, great for family gatherings. Prices are on the high scale but worth having once in a while. Recommended.

When Modern Shanghai first opened it's doors, we were all in awe since the place has a whole new take on chinese cuisine and interiors that time (you'll know what I mean if you were a regular at GM, DG, Century seafood restaurant, EG, and etc.). Soon enough, it became one of our choices whenever we visit moa.

Food here has always been the same -- good.
I've frequented this place and already know what to order : Xiao long bao; pork buns; clay pot tofu; sweet n sour pork; and mapo tofu with minced pork. These are what we usually order, and as a person who shies away from tofu, they really have a great version of mapo tofu with minced pork. Their sweet n sour pork doesn't really have that much meat in the serving, all thin strips, but they are seasoned well and good to taste! Their pork buns are also good, although a bit oily.

What I'd like to mention here is that despite the food being good, the serving isn't that great especially for the price you're paying for. Food can sometimes be served after waiting.

Flooring could get a little refurbishing and cleaning because they don't look that clean anymore. They have really nice flooring tiles but they really have to be cleaned.

Service is okay as well, I remember eating here before watching the captain america movie last year, and then suddenly there were gunshots outside fired by a group of people who were trying to steal jewelry (?) inside the department store. Their staff kept us safe for a while (thank you!) but in the end we all just wanted to leave the area. All in all, modern shanghai is a must-try!

An over-priced chinese restaurant. 128513 Didn't liked their hakaw (i prefer thin wrapper so you could taste the shrimps 128521).

Accepts credit card, and I liked their in-house tea sarap! 128076🏻

Quite a disappointment especially at the prices they were asking. My companion said it best: "Mas mabuti pa sa Ling Nam." We started with the double boiled chicken soup, which tasted like tinola and with bony pieces of chicken. Maybe it was to help with the flavor, which wasn't that bad, but a definite torture eating with bits of bone all over your mouth. Their signature xiao long bao was not that great nor was the siumai. The deep fried Hong Kong style chicken was also ordinary. Oh dear. At least they had this unique drink that I liked. I can't recommend a restaurant for that though. What the blazes will you eat with that? No, you deserve better.

My goodness, dining here has got to be one of the worse, if not the worst, dining experiences ever! Take note that there were no vouchers or promos involved here.. Plus the fact that this negative experience multiplies by almost 20 people at once!

I hate shelling out so much money (almost PHP 10k) for a large group when the food and primary service are priced high, but ultimately come cheap. Sure, the Xiao Long Bao remains their seller, but if the rest of the food are not served in sync and are served late and cold, eating is not a happy experience. The adequate attention from the servers and the manager came too late, when we were already angry and hungry (thus, no pictures). Even when we had order cancellations, I still think going there was such a waste of time.

Maybe the management didn't know I do reviews. Tough for them, but yes, I paid expensively and we were not satisfied at all. End verdict: GO SOMEPLACE ELSE.

I'm sorry for the picture, but this is just to prove that I ate their mango pomelo. Hehe too excited to eat it. I did not like it at this branch its 80 percent milk and just a pinch of pomelo. Nakakainis lang. That is why this branch is not crowded.

First and foremost can I just express how much I really love Modern Shanghai’s Interiors? Really simple and elegant. It’s very relaxing at some point and I don’t know why. I just love the vibe. Anyways, et’s move on to the food. We tried their Beef Scallions Lunch Set for only 298.00! It has Sauteed String Beans with Minced Pork and Chili, Xiao Long Bao and of course the Beef Scallions. It’s my first time to try Xiao Long Bao and I’m glad I tried the #1 Xia Long Bao in Manila! Wohoo! It’s really delicious, no wonder why it landed the top spot! Xiao long Bao means a small basket dumpling, some would define it as another form of siomai, and Mr. Wikipedia says it’s a kind of soup dumplings. Anyways, enough talking. Just try it!

Revisited this resto after a long while, their xiao long bao taste better, less doughy. Beef with noodle is tasty, noodle not too soft, fried beans with minced pork taste just right,

Got this Sweet and Sour Chicken set for free thanks to Raisa Z and looloo!! :) 127880The set costs 498 pesos and is composed of Sweet and Sour chicken, Braised Beancurd with Minced Pork, xiao Long Bao and 2 cups of egg rice.

The sweet and sour pork was good. The chicken is still crispy even though the sauce was already added. The sweet and sour sauce is very thick, which made the chicken be very covered with sauce ( which I did not like). Their Xiao Long bao is good! :)

Right off the bat, I'd say their prices are pretty steep for me, but I decided to push through since I was hankering for some Chinese food.

Ordered their famous xia long bao, pork and shrimp siomai, beef in pepper sauce, half chicken in soy garlic I think, yang chow fried rice and deep fried glutinous balls with sesame seeds and red bean paste (basically buchi haha)

The xia long bao was good, but everything else was kind of meh for me. The service was pretty good, though. The food also came out of the kitchen pretty fast. But for the price, I would probably get my yummy xia long bao elsewhere.

Every time we're craving for some Chinese food, Modern Shanghai is our go to resto. 128523

Their Xiao Long Bao is definitely one of THE BEST! 128077

I suggest you all try their Mango Sangria Tea as your drink because it's so refreshing. 128077 it's made up of strawberry, mangoes, mint and a little bit of soda (Sprite) on it..

We tried their Pork dumpling on chili sauce and it tastes just like their Xiao Long Bao! LOL. Only difference is that it's pan fried and it has chili sauce with it.

By far, the best Xiao Long Bao ive had. Their deep-fried pork ribs was so good, best paired with their Yangchow fried rice. Shrimp siomai was good too but their chicken feet for me was just so-so. Their serving is good to share also. Worth the price.
Good and fast service.

Xiao Long Bao was pretty amazing. The restaurant was a little pricey for me but they really put a lot of heart into their cooking. Reminds me of Din Tai Fung without the grouchy waiters.

Craving for dimsum very much satisfied. My first time and I love the Xiao long bao. I think better than Lugang's. The pan fried shanghai pork buns is also very good, went well with the salty signature shanghai fried noodles. Great service!

We wanted to try something new but we are not expecting an authentic chinese dishes this evening..

So here it goes.. We tries ordering noodles fries and with soup since we are on a strict diet NO RICE! Lol! We also tried dumplings mushroom vegie and xiao long bao
Si we began trying those..

Beef noodles - wow! Just WOW! It is way better than north park. The soup is great! But mind you - it is salty. I just liked salty foods. Hehe

Fried noodles - ohhh!!! Delish! It was really good! Kinda plain when they serve it but theres a lot of flavors hidden

Mushroom veggie - oh! Do not try it! It was just like veggie all the way.. It was very plain. I didnt find it interesting to eat..

Xiao long bao - best seller.. The taste of pork inside has a very strong flavor but the after taste of ginger.. IT RUINS IT.. I dont like ginger. But if you are someone that can tolerate ginger YOU BETTER TRY THIS ONE!

The overflowing house specialty tea!! Oh yes! OVERFLOWING! IT IS FREE! Everything that is free is absolutely wonderful! Hahaha

The ambience is really good! Plus the SERVICE! MAGNIFICENT. It was very personalized.. I like it when someone is ALWAYS on the go to give what you need!

I salute you TIN(server) please let her knoe i wrote something to her. Lol
