Had a disgusting and thoroughly disappointing meal at this place. The lapulapu was smothered in what looked like sautéed mud listed in the menu as "special sauce". The abalone mushroom drowned in starchy sauce, and to top it all the cup of steamed white rice came with a crawly maggot. They deducted the price of the steamed rice from the bill that came up to 2,600+! The most expensive disgusting dinner I've ever had.

There was nothing that was not good. The lapu lapu with brown sauce, the clams, the special beef, and the braised beef mami, all exceptional! I am definitely coming back for more.

Still the BEST steamed fish in the city. The place was packed but the waiters were very friendly and polite. Patrons were seated as soon as the tables were cleared and set-up. The Pata Tim was sublime! Melt in your mouth with subtle flavors. I suggest you call to make reservations if your going as a group or plan to go during weekends. You will never go wrong with the steamed fish, pata Tim, live Suaje , Lechon kawali or braised beef Mami .

steam lapu lapu with special sauce is one-of-a-kind. their fried chicken and special beef are excellent too.

one time we ate there last month, there were 5 of us and we ate 4 orders of steam lapu lapu (700-800 grams each) with special sauce. this was an addition to the 2 orders of special beef, 1 whole fried chicken, 2 orders of yang chow fried rice, 1 order of leafy vegetable, 2 orders of cha mi, and around 15 cups of rice. busog!!!

Still the best steamed fish, steamed clams, braised beef Mami and Chinese Lechon kawali in town! The place was packed ( for Sunday lunch) but the service staff were very pleasant and accommodating. The owner even came by our table to say hello. The place was hopping but we got our food cooked to perfection. I recommend you make reservations if coming as a big group or during weekends.

Sabi na nga ba, I'll be back!!

This time ordered clams with tausi, kutchay with bean sprout, fried salt and pepper spareribs, buchi and special beef plus avocado shake 127775127775127775127775127775

I was really surprised with the taste of special beef. It's super soft, kinda taste like pares beef but a better version. Kutchay with bean sprout/ toge plus shrimp -a simple dish made special. Spareribs, also good except too much bones 128528 and the clams, nothing special just the ordinary. Buchi looks sunog- but hell no!! it's te best!!!!

We even take home chami and another order of special beef 128077128077

Hoping to see Maricar Reyes Poon and Richard!!!!

This place has been a family favorite for years now. For me it is the definition of a "hole in the wall" food find: unassuming location, no-frills ambiance and most importantly food so good that it turns it's quirks into charms and keeps you coming back for more.

The names of the dishes may sound obscure, but choices like the Special Beef live up to the unusual name. Fatty, boiled tender and topped with ginger and coriander, it's a satisfying dish on its own if you're eating by yourself. The Steamed Lapu-Lapu with Special Ingredient (yes, that's what it's called) may look unappetizing as the fish is slathered in a brown-green sauce as mysterious as the bane suggests, but there's a reason that it's been the house specialty for decades. Rich, earthy and just right poured over hot rice, the fish is a winner every time. Other menu items like the oysters in black bean sauce, steamed dumplings and fried chicken round off a great meal at Mr. Poon that sets it apart from other Chinese restaurants in Manila.

When I was younger, and my dad had to go to Manila for hospital rounds on a Sunday, our go-to restaurant was Mr. Poon - for their chicken, their steamed fish, and their buko salad. They eventually closed and several franchises started propping up everywhere but nothing could match the original.

Two years ago, it opened again in the Malate area along Guerrero street. Along the peripheral borders of UP Manila and St. Paul's Manila. There's ample parking space across the restaurant and its also quite spacious.

Mr. Poon does many things well. My favorite is the steamed lapu-lapu with special sauce. It's a weird looking brown sauce but it tastes phenomenal! Close your eyes if it looks iffy to you and I promise, you'll like it.

Go, visit! Maybe you'll even catch a glimpse of Richard Poon there!
