This afternoon, my mom accompanied me to my first fitting for my bridesmaid gown for my cousin's wedding (this coming June), and found ourselves wandering around the Ongpin area. Since we were a bit hungry, we decided to eat at Mr. Ube before going home.

We had the following for sharing:
✔ Canton Style Noodles (Php 180) - 1108811088110881108811088
Their version of pancit canton had generous toppings that had a great variety, ranging from vegetables, pork slices, chorizo, chicken liver, and shrimps! 128525 The noodles are cooked in a saucy way, and is not too mushy (which is usually the case for Chinese noodles). The serving size was big, good for 2-3 persons. A yummy merienda for an affordable price!

✔ Pork and Shrimp Siomai (Php 60 for 5 pieces) - 110881108811088
Their siomai was underwhelming, as the meat was not that firm and the wrapper was soggy. Quite disappointing, as Mr. Ube is supposedly a Chinese restaurant. Their chili sauce was a good addition to the slightly bland dimsum dish, though.

✔ Ube Custard Crazy Hopia Shake (Php 85) - 11088110881108811088
Eng Bee Tin's custard hopia in shake form? 128552 I initially thought this shake might have a weird texture, since I'm imagining that it might have the flaky hopia crust in it. 128517 But it was yummy and oh so creamy! The milk and ice cream did their magic. It really does taste like the custard hopia, which I am a big fan of. It's definitely a great drink to beat the heat this summer. 128525 (It's a bit pricey, though, thus the -111088)

The place is quite small, and there is nothing notable in their ambiance. Service was just okay, the server kept forgetting to give us what we need and went back and forth just to be able to give us our plates and utensils.

Overall, food is good and generally has good value for money! 128523

My Auntie is here in Manila for the week for her US Embassy interview and some opthalmologist appointments and such. Since it's gonna be Chinese New Year tomorrow, a visit at Binondo was something she wanted to push. I was sure there's gonna be a big crowd visiting the place. Side story: Did you know Manila's Chinatown is the oldest one in the world? I read this somewhere. Cool cool cool! Going back, we had a visit at Binondo and right after arrival we met with another Auntie at Mr Ube. #damikongaunties They were already eating so we had no choice but to order there too. Wanted to go President's, Wai Ying, King Chef, or something else pa naman sana. #damigusto

They are a pay as you order type of restaurant. Medyo magulo, to be honest, but I'd forgive that for now because super duper daming tao. The servers were all over the place, carrying orders here and there. Many people loitering and looking for an empty table and such. Sakit sa ulo sa gulo.

My sister and I shared their Shabu Laksa. I really don't know why the name but I was hungry and since the server recommended it, it was an easy okay-sige-yan-na-lang for me. Gutom na rin eh. We also shared the Mr Ube Specialty which is some egg noodles with some seafood and chicken bits. My Auntie had the Beef Wanton which she liked, my other Auntie the Chopsuey Rice. I tried all and they were pretty good. Laksa was really tasty and a bit spicy! The squid balls they used tasted not too good but pwede na. Mr Ube Specialy's egg noodles was dry but tasted okay. Beef wanton tasted the usual, nothing too special about their version. Clear soup broth plus thin noodles and some pieces of beef brisket plus two wonton dumplings. The chopsuey was good! I got to try it and I will order it the next time I'm there.

The serving sizes were really big. One bowl can be shared by 2-3 persons. Price reange at 200-300 pesos per order.

1. When my guy friend and I were strolling along Ongpin we were hungry but Cafe Mezzanine (which I also reviewed) was full at that time. Luckily, there was another restaurant named Mr. Ube which is just like Cafe Mezzanine -- line of Eng Bee Tin products, for example -- since both restaurants are both owned by Mr. Gerry Chua.

2. Our dining experience gave us the impression that Mr. Ube's fare will definitely be worth your money! I had a big bowl of Beef Wanton noodle soup while my friend had the Thai Tom Yam, P150 each.

3. My Beef Wanton was packed with ingredients. Not only did I get to enjoy the big chunks of beef, but there was also a delightful surprise -- my meal also had big pieces of siomai! Really, it was a meal in itself. It was my first time also to eat the real "bok choi" which is like our pechay. The meat was tender, the broth was flavorful and tasted natural. I didn't realize that I'd get that much for P150. Had I only known I would have ordered one bowl only and shared it with my date. But really, it was a complete meal!

4. My friend also let me taste the Tom Yam. It was also good! Unfortunately I'm allergic to shrimp. He, on the other hand, doesn't eat beef (due to his own beliefs). We would have ordered something sweet but we were already blissfully bloated. Haha! When you get to Binondo don't forget to try Cafe Mezzanine and Mr. Ube!

I don't know if I'm exaggerating but oh my gosh this is the best halo-halo I've had in my life! 128523

There is cheese! And their gulaman tasted so good when usually, gulaman is tasteless. They also have this different kind of kamote, the orange-colored type, which was an instant favorite. There is also red beans, and all other ingredients you'd love, especially the ube ice cream128156
