Niji has a wiiiiiiiiide array of options. But that doesn't mean they lack in quality. It takes a while before orders will be served but that just tells you they serve fresh food everytime.

I always seem to overlook Niji when hanging out in Friendship and trying to look for a place to eat. I blame the plethora of Korean restos in the area tempting me with their samgyeopsal promos. But when I heard that they had opened a branch in San Fdo, I no longer had an excuse not to give it a try. So I dragged my family there last Sunday for lunch.

It would be a sin to leave Niji without trying one of their makis, which apparently are their bestsellers. And I can see why. Their crazy california maki is the bomb, not only aesthetically pleasing but also very filling (eight huge pieces).

Also had their yasai itame, which technically is just vegetable stir-fry, but Niji's was superior to any other stir-fry I've ever had. Laden with generous servings of beef and extremely tasty, I would come back for this alone.

My only dislike is their chicken teriyaki, which was a bit dry (maybe because they fry it instead of grilling it). You're better off ordering their donburi, like the beef gyudon. Not the best I've had, but not half-bad either.

Curiosity piqued, we ordered their fried ice cream. When it was served, I was kinda disappointed to see it was not what I was expecting. The ice cream was not fried at all, it was scooped atop a medley of fruits (banana, mango, pineapple) fried in some kind of cream. It's still ice cream though, so how could I have stayed disappointed? We ended lunch on a happy note. :)

I had high expectations of niji since it was recommended by a Japanese acquaintance of my fiancé.

Now I am a maki lover and my benchmark for delicious and nicely presented maki is Omakase. Having moved to tarlac city earlier this year, I figured a good nearby Japanese resto that could satisfy my occasional craving would be a great alternative to Oma.

Having said this, I find niji to be a good alternative but not my go to place. As a maki lover, I am particular about the taste and quality more than the non-maki dishes. I ordered Double Salmon maki and spicy scallop maki but they were average and lacked a certain texture, taste and quality to be at par with Omakase.

As for the rest of their dishes which I got to try, they were quite good.

The food is quite affordable and for the money we spent we ate quite a lot and took half of what we ordered home with us.

There is something in their maki that makes it awesome. I am not sure what. It might be the rice, it might be the fresh seafood, it might be something else... But, it really is yummy!

I have had my fair share of Japanese restaurants and niji is certainly one of my favorites. 9786

Great Japanese Restaurant along Friendship Hi way. I like the consistency and taste of their meat and their sushi boat as well. Highly recommended!
