I've spotted Papi Chulo's about once or twice along Aguirre and have been curious about its al fresco, fiesta feel. Decided to try it one weeknight last week. Thankfully the weather was nice and there was a cool breeze. Their whole area is open so I guess you could smoke. However, the area near the parking is very easily reachable by street kids so keep your bags safe.
Read up on them and one of the most popular things on their menu is their elote corn. I am a big fan of this having tried it in LA and San Diego; it's grilled corn smothered in crema Fresca, cheese and chili powder. Sooo good but you need to have a tough tummy for it if you know what I mean 128540 theirs has a bit of a twist where they add truffle cream (or oil I'm not sure) and Parmesan. One serving is 3 halves of a cob and you can have it grated as well.
I would describe the food as 'gourmet Mexican', they've put their own special touches to some Mexican staples. Each order is about 120-170 but it's like getting tapas, servings are quite small. We got the chicken butt soft taco, spicy tuna tostada (Japanese style with seaweed), tinga (chicken skin) tostada and shrimp quesadillas.
The food was ok but nothing really stood out for me except for the corn maybe. They also have bigger bowls for the mains but we weren't able to try it.
Total bill was 735 for 5 items, ok imo if you want to try a new kind of Mexican experience 128522
