Since moving back to the McKinley area, one thing I've been excited of is Planet Grapes. It's all the new wines I can taste (again) complete with top-notch service.

The servers here are knowledgeable and kind enough for both newbies ("Hi, ma'am, is it your first time here?") and regulars. They'll help you choose the perfect wine for your mood, just don't expect tequilla if you're having it really difficult today.

Planet Grapes has that expensive vibe from the outside. The place is dim, the tables outside have candles (hence, the photo), the servers are dressed aptly, and the place boasts a lot of well, wine. The wine selection here, initially separated as red or white or rose, is classified according to the wine's body with their corresponding origin and year. They offer a number of Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand wines so it's a plus for me (as Barcino is heavier on the South America and European wines).

One thing to note though is that their food is to not be considered at all. It's not their forte and they know it, allowing guests (I believe minimum purchase is Php500) to bring their own food. So yes, I walked over at Banapple to score myself some mushroom pie and our server welcomed me with a plate and cutleries. I wouldn't pay Php200++ for street food, I'm sorry!

Prepare to spend around Php1,500 for their wines but the service and good company you have is worth the price. You can bring your own food and they would not mind that much. Perfect place to bring or meet-up with your fellow titas. 128513

I am no wine expert.   I realized that expertise is not needed to enjoy drinking it.   I had this thinking that one needs to have a Bourdain-like palette to appreciate wine.  Not unless you have a lil French or Italian DNA in your genes.

The first time I learned to appreciate wine was 2012.  Picanto Merlot from Chile at Eleven Tables (quaint wine/resto bar in Kapitolyo).  FYI,  i have a love/hate relationship with Jack and an affair with The Russian.  Me,  liking wine is a revelation and being able to taste the subtle flavors is even better.  I feel like guesting on Downton Abbey or something.  (Note: I will post a separate review for Eleven Tables)

I think it was a Thursday when my friend and i decided to stake Tuscany Estates in McKinley.  Her,  being a wine affionado picked Planet Grapes.

Planet Grapes offers a myriad selection of wine (Cabernet Sauvignion,  Merlot,  Chardonnay and the others i can't spell nor pronounce).  They also have this cute dispensers that's called Enomatic machine. Similar to a soda vending machine,  stores wine in airtight compartments.  The bottles are labelled with flavor description.  The arrangement is good for my OCD.  128522

We ordered a bottle of red,  Carmenere 2012.  A smooth,  aromatic wine with sweet tones, best paired with meat.

A lil etymology for the neophyte wine drinkers like me.

Carmenere originates from the French word for Crimson which refers to the crimson color of the autumn foliage prior to leaf fall (Source:  Wikipedia)

Planet Grapes has  quirky wine pairings.   Who in their right mind would pair red with penoy?   Uhmmm...Planet Grapes.  A lil out of the box,  huh?  I dunno if the flavors compliment each other (I do not eat Penoy) but I am digging the idea.  The pairings is an homage to Filipino street food and cuisine.  A wine bar with a sense of nationalism -  i think that is enough to convince you to have sip.

Had the black cod steak with adobo rice and Chorizo skewers. Also tastes the prawns and the barbecued chicken.

For a place that is supposed to highlight wine, the food was excellent. Cod was cooked perfectly. Not dreams was seasoned well. The chorizo is best when toasted. Pair with plain rice. The adobo rice while just a siding was really good. Topped with floss the flavors and texture were just right.

So if you are in Shang cross the street to the north wing (where watering hole used to be) and try out this place. Maybe next time I will actually try the wine selection.

Chill place, it's something new and it's definitely worth trying. The staff are nice and very accommodating and they'll answer all your questions about which one you should try and which one suits your palate best. The place looks fancy but the price is reasonable.

I will always come back here for the Pinot Gris. Crisp, not too fruity, and dry as I like it. I can certainly gulp a whole bottle of this.

We ate in Main Street and because they don't serve wine, they said they can call Planet Grapes for us. Now isnt that sooo convenient for me! Ayaw mo talaga ng madrama!

Peach L heres another credit for you! Nakakadami ka na sa akin! Haha. You and JP G may esp ata9786

And so I found myself sashaying again towards the glass wall with an emphasized message: "Wine without the drama" and opaque doors of Planet Grapes.

Ok, let's not imagine the sashaying part. 128513

This place has been a favorite hangout eversince it opened. Everytime we wanted wine night, we'd go here... It's because of the relaxed ambiance, the wide wine choices, and the great service with waitstaff quite knowledgeable in the products they're selling. 128077 Helps that they're goodlooking and very friendly as well 128513

For this particular night, we felt that the sake from Taka didn't quite make it in our alcohol digestive storage so we went to Planet Grapes for a nightcap. We ordered one giant bottle of 2010 Chateau Lamartine, a Malbec wine. It was quite soothing. Had that hint of spice and woody taste with slight textured bitterness. 128077

My attention was focused on the food though. This place is solidly a wine place and you won't have a huge option for food. They only have a number of appetizers which you can count in one hand (last I checked). The one worth mentioning is the baked Camembert with breadsticks. It was very, very good! That familiar camembert taste, a bit crispy on the outside and almost melting on the inside because of the baking involved. Quite a joy to experience 128522128077

We also had the cold cuts platter which was accompanied by malt cheese, brie, almonds, walnuts, pistaccio, raisins and breadsticks. And weird as it may seem, they have Penoy on the menu, which was really good! Egg broth was warm and the yolk was soft and delicious 128522

Everytime we go here, this place delivers. And true to its tagline, we go here just for the fun of wining, not to whine or do some drama cuts. 128540

Their rosé was good but I still like Terry's Homenaje better. Still, their herbed popcorn was a nice touch and their interiors are much spacier than Terry's 128513

Wine without the drama indeed. Everything about this place screams comfort. The concept of the place is to be able to be yourself without having to be so conscious of proper etiquette and/or decorum as compared to most (if not all) of the other wine lounges.

I am absolutely in love with their modern take on a wine cellar. It's new, trendy, but still keeping the sophistication that is wine. It's a great place to unwind in after a long day. Wine selection is superb too! If you're into a good merlot, the Angeline vintage 2011 will not disappoint; it's very easy on the palette and just the right hint of sweetness. If you want something a little more bold with high notes of fruity flavor, I suggest the Paso Robles Sirah vintage 2008.

The staff are also incredibly friendly and accommodating! Definitely coming back here again and again. Let's wine up! 128522127863

We all just want happy grapes!!

I initially asked the server which of their wines have the highest alcohol content. They have Woodstock fortfied wine at 20% but we settled for a Spy Valley 2012 gewurztraminer because I said so. Haha. It's difficult when there are lots of options! The bottle costs Php1,400 which is pricey for wine because you can get 2 (or 3!) good bottles for that amount!

Then again, I can say that Php1,400 was worth it. The service was fantastic! 128536 The servers (their male servers look like they can double as bouncers) were quick to refill your glass for both wine and water. They'll ask if you want your opened bottled chilled, so they'll put a wine bucket (with a stand) at the end, where it doesn't take up any space on the table.

There's NO food corkage because they don't serve meals (aside from delis and appetizers). On the photo above, that's S&R pizza. I asked if we can eat it there or if we have to pay. They said it's fine and got our food. Our server went back and presented it with their cutesy plates and cutleries. Our Php200 pizza looked like Php450 when plated that way. Uh-huh.

I'm a wine drinker (my display photo as of this time says it all 128529) and I would love to go back here, even if I can get their wines cheaper elsewhere! That's how much I enjoyed the place. 128513

If I could go and live in a planet, I'd live in Planet Grapes --- where wine is unlimited and the food is great! 128540

Ok, I'm not so sure about the food because when we went there, it was a special occasion so the food was catered.

This small wine bar is the hip sibling of Wine Story. Very cool interior, minimalist with the high tables and chairs. When you enter, you will see right away the wine dispenser similar to Cav's but unlike Cav's, this one is designed more like a bar. Obviously for those who love to wine themselves to death without so much the air of snoot. 128513

I've been a wine aficionado ever since I got a reason to drink wine one glass a day. Why would anyone not like it? It's healthy, it's good, and it's booze. 128513

But don't get me wrong, I don't know the technicalities of wine. For me, as long as it tastes good, I'm fine with it... The good taste is as far as I know about wines. 128540

I chose to indulge in Napa Merlot and Five Rows' Merlot and Cabernet. I tried Five Rows' Merlot first but I thought it was a little bit light for me so I changed my glass for a Napa. This one was a bit more dense than FR's merlot but still good. There was a hint of herb and spice and sweetness. Then I shifted back to FR after a few glasses but instead of merlot, I tried the Cabernet. I liked it better than the previous one because although they're both light in taste, the cabernet sauvignon is more robust and the tannic strength is apparent... Not the kind of kick one gets in commercial table wines, though. It was what I was looking for that night -- a bit of buzz but something soothing. A platter of bleu, provolone, manchego, some cold cuts and some other cheeses to go with my glass completed my night. Perfect way to end my birthday. 128522128077128076

The service was great, the waiters were quick to refill my glass as soon as they saw it's empty 128540 I'm not sure though if they're as quick on normal days.

If you happen to be in the area and you want a chill night, give this a try. Planet Grapes is quite new, only opened about a month ago and is located on the upper side of Mckinley. 128077
