Happy Chinese New Year! Through the years this celebration has been embraced by Filipinos in the Philippines. In fact it has been recognized as a holiday just a few years back. Going around, Chinese lanterns or any resemblance of the rooster (for 2017) is now even more evident.

Just last week, together with other Chinese Zomato foodies we had our own early celebration of Chinese New Year at Red Lantern at Solaire. A step inside this iconic restaurant, you’ll feel like you are overseas with its sophisticated and well themed ambiance.

On a private room we were welcomed by their top chefs from Singapore, lead by executive chef, Jimmy Chaw. He was one passionate individual. All throughout our time together he took time explaining each dish with much delight and detail. He alone made this night memorable.

To kick off our 10 course dinner, we had the customary Yu Sheng or Prosperity Toss. We got our individual chopsticks and tossed these colorful ensemble as high as we could while shouting for bountiful blessings. It got messy! How’s that for a kick off? This dish was dominantly salty and sweet as it had a long line up of ingredients and sauces. It included tasty smoked salmon, shredded vegetables, fried wanton wrapper, nuts, coriander to name a few.

A Instagram worthy dish followed, Braised Baby Abalone with Dried Oysters, Black Mushroom & Garden Greens with Japanese Beancurd Skin. The fusion of this appetizer clearly defined the direction of Red Lantern. Contemporary and not traditional, going forward with culinary trends. The texture abounds with a number of pieces combined together. The oysters though were grainy maybe a bit too ‘fresh’.

Garden Bay was an artist rendition. Baos were crafted into mushrooms while its carrots were fried glutinous rice filled with minced pork. Oh and I thought the black parts were Oreos, they were bread. It looked better though than how it tasted. Tweaking is needed here to make it stand out on the palate.

We all grew up loving Siomai or Siew Mai. Their version was a huge piece with whole shrimps and topping it were dancing Bonito Flakes. These swayed as they were reacting to the heat of the dimsum. I would have raved about this more if it wasn’t too fatty.

Another classic dimsum served was their Hakao or Har Gau. Presented in Yin and Yang with gold shavings, the wrapper was also thin. Inside truffle is vividly present together with ample shrimps. A bite could lead to another. It’s my favorite savory dish they served that night.

Two way Peking Duck was next and they proudly mention that they are American. Simply meant, fatter! And it was. To me that was a downside as am not a fan of it. The skin though was seasoned well and crispy.

Pork Pyramid was effort intensive. It’s basically braised pork belly wrapped around to form a pyramid structure. This one came with freshly prepared fluffy cuapaos. Together they make so much sense.

Their number one dish, Deep Fried Butter Prawns with Salted Egg (the flavor of 2016) was next. These plump prawns were deep fried to golden brown with generous amounts of salted egg felt with its rough texture. The addition of basil leaves creates a nice twist.

To end were a series of desserts. I loved the Snow Lady most for its unbelievable soft mochi and inside was sweet cream filling with fresh mangoes. Osmanthus Tea Jelly was somewhat refreshing but had too much syrup in them. Pan Fried Tikoy were seemingly half cooked as it were still almost on its original state.

Red Lantern, check. Solaire has so much more dining spots and I look forward to visit them soon. If only they weren’t too far from where I live.

last week my mom gave me a solaire food and beverage 5,000gc for any restaurant in solaire hotel and casino. so i asked the wifey if her parents are available for lunch today and if they are, to reserve a table for 6.

when i arrived the hotel i self parked at the casino parking. bad choice since 1) it's far from the restaurant, and 2) valet parking is free. oh well.

when we arrived, my inlaws were already sitting. after the greetings, we proceeded to order. we availed of the dimsum buffet promo (1,388+ per person).

we ordered a lot..
hot and sour tofu soup with shrimp wantons 128077128077 the soup was full of flour and there wasn't too much rekado in it. you could count with your 2 hands how many total pieces of rekado are in it. and there weren't any shrimp wanton.

cold cuts combination 128077128077128077 the asado was good as well as the duck meat with mango

we ordered yang chow fried rice and salted fish fried rice which both i didn't touch.

sichuan mapo tofu 128077128077128077 the tofu was a bit "hard". the sauce wasn't spicy.

hakaw was ok 128077128077128077. the shrimp was small.

stir fried spinach with garlic 128077128077128077128077128077 perfect!!

hot prawn salad 128077128077128077128077 the first serving wasn't hot, but the second serving was hot and newly cooked.

kataifi roll with avocado 128077128077128077128077128077 my favorite dessert here

chilled pomelo and mango sago 128077128077128077 this is not bad, but not so good too.

After watching Les Mis we had late dinner good that they extend up to midnight. The place is very cozy and rich it such a wonderful place to eat if you are looking for a chinese fibe dining. For the food my favorite the chicken in suychian sauce perfecy balance of all taste, their version of seafood noodles is good and walang umay, yang chow rice have a lot ingredients but the sweet sour pork just ok. Service is fast perhaps place is almost empty that time. The main attraction here for me is the place this is five star restaurant. The food price is not cheap but its good and the place is fantastic. I will return here to celebrate special occasion.

Seeing the generally positive reviews, I'm not sure what to think. Maybe its my pallette, but I feel I've had much better tasting and better quality Chinese food elsewhere.

Their best-selling prawn and mango fried roll tasted ordinary. The sweet and sour pork was tough. The fish was on the dry and tough side. The soup tasted bland. The rest was just 'mehhhh'. Though the place was nice and seeing all that food on the table was pretty, it just didn't really work for me. If they amped up the quality, then the P1008 order-all-you-can lunch menu would be something I'd look forward to.

Loved the fact that they reduced their buffet prices to Php800++ for dimsum all-you-can ... The choices are awesome. They give you a card that's a long checklist. Better be careful and ask which ones come in twos (two servings). Had to stuff myself to death.. Hahaha...

Not too fond of the taro items but the siomais, wraps, were wonderful! Mango pudding was great and crispy sesame balls as well... There's an option for a more expensive buffet which includes the roasts (and rice, I think, at Php1,000++) but either one is worth it. Not too fond of roasts or rice (especially when it's eat-all-you-can dimsum...!).

Great for lunch. It's like an experience of quality Chinese lauriat at quite an affordable price. They also have ginger ale soda which I love with my Chinese food (memories of Hong Kong trips when I was younger).

Told you this is our new fave Chinese resto! We celebrated my Aunt's birthday here last Sun.

Good thing the waitress, Karen, who was assigned to us was the same one who served us during the New Year! Mom was so happy to find out that the Yee Sang Salad was still available!

A new dish we tried was the Spareribs in Special Sauce. Karen said that the sauce was made of coffee. Sauce was delicious but wasnt as outstanding as the other dishes.

Mom was craving the Yee Sang Salad but unfortunately, the waiter was a bit confused and said that it was no longer available but I found out on our 3rd visit that it would still be available till the 15th!

Oh well, our trip wasn't a disappointment! Got to try new stuff!

Mushroom & Tofu:
you guys really have to try this! i dont know what or how they cooked the tofu but it was delicious!!!!!! soft and tasty!!! they didint scrimp on the mushrooms as the slices were huge!

XO fried rice:
one of their best sellers. of course, it's a bit spicy but they put the xo on the side so u can adjust the spicyness level

Cod Fish & Eggplant:
yum yum yum!!!! cod fish fillets - just the way I like my fish!!!

What a nice way to end 2013 by eating at this Restaurant! Since this is located inside a hotel(Solaire), the ambiance and furniture is very top notch!! No complains or whatsoever! Loved our table which is in a transparent room and located at the center of the resto! Awesome-nesssss!!! 128513128077

Nice thing here is that you can not only reserve before hand but also order your food in advance! Isn't that cool? 128513 Sadly I'm sooo disappointed that having that unique feature, they don't guarantee that the dishes you ordered in advance will be available on the date and time of reservation! WorTHless to have that! 128529128529128529

So we ordered their sweet and sour fish, Polonchay, Tofu Mushroom Hotpot, Fried Spareribs with A1 sauce and Pork Belly. General common comments for all dishes: small servings and very expensive! Despite those setbacks, the food is just 128076! Enough said! Of all the dishes, the spareribs has the best design of them all!

Servers know their food well and serve well! They are very attentive and always there to assist in your inquiries, orders or requests. They are so friendly that they like to mingle with is about anything! So we talked about who is the owner of the place and that he's eating with his family at the table over there, how the prices are so high during its grand opening( 1k for a plate of Yang Chow 128561) etc.

I would definitely be back here BUT during special occasions only or if I have friends who want to eat good Chinese food and is willing to spend for the price. Happy 2014 to all!
