Booming UP Town recently expanded its third wing and now provides even more retail and restaurant options. Although Rita’s is surrounded by dessert places including Manila Creamery and Mad Mark’s, their’s offer so much more for you and me. Their concept in its entirety is novel and creative. This enables them to cater to a much wider audience.

I was overwhelmed initially as they provide you 9 ways to have a sweet moment. It starts with Italian Ice, a sure fire refreshing drink with smooth and ice cold texture. This one is similar to snow cone but made much better with even more flavors to choose from. Cotton Candy is their best selling one and I got the reason why instantly. The delicious after taste of the fluffy treat stays with you! Another favorite was the reliable mango. It was just like sipping the fruit!

Frozen Custard is their version of ice cream. Not many offers it here in Manila. A touch of egg yolk is what makes it different from the popular ice cream. The yolk is a natural emulsifier, imparting a richer, creamier texture. I go to try four: Vanilla, Chocolate, Coffee and Butter Pecan. I enjoyed all of it but my banner flavor chocolate stands. It’s thick yet smooth feel is alive in every spoonful.

Now when you combine both ice and custard you have 3 options: Gelati, Misto and Blendini. Gelati is separating them- ice below and your custard choice on top. I love the wildly combined Strawberry and Lemonade Twist topped with Vanilla and Chocolate they served to us. It’s strangely a battle in your palate of sweet creaminess with an icy sourness to it.

Misto is your shake as it blends your custard and ice together. They served the fusion of Mocha Ice and Choco Custard. It turned out to be a seamless drink better than your Starbucks Frapuccino. Blendini on the other hand is Misto with your choice of topping. I must say its like your McFlurry, premium version. Happy to grab a bigger spoon and dig in to their Mango Ice + Vanilla Custard + Wet Walnuts. It’s additional texture of crunch is a big plus and it does get you going.

Other options to go gaga with is Frozen Drink. It’s your Italian Ice swirled better for you to straw in and drink. The Sugar Free Dragon Fruit or Green Apple is a must try on this choice. There’s also the Milkshake, Frozen Custard blend in with the help of milk. Option 8 would be your Frozen Custard with unlimited toppings places on cones. The last way is their cakes! Now didn’t I tell you they got you locked in?

With Manila’s scorching heat, it was not surprising that Rita’s was a hit when it came to Manila two years ago. I still remember the long queue just to get your frozen custard fix. I have to admit, I tried my best not to give in to the craze but eventually found myself lining up a few months later (since it opened its first branch in Greenhills) and was delighted by Rita’s Gelati or a combination of Italian ice and frozen custard. Fast forward to 2016, Rita’s is still getting a lot of attention with its wide array of flavors and combinations to choose from. And I had an opportunity to sample a bunch of Rita’s bestselling items a few Saturdays ago.

Hello, Rita’s Italian Ice!

I dropped by Rita’s U.P. Town Center branch on a sunny Saturday afternoon and was warmly greeted by its Marketing Officer Angela who treated us to a refreshing afternoon snack.

We first sampled Italian Ice in cotton candy, green apple, sugar-free dragon fruit, mango and kiwi-strawberry flavors. All are light in flavor and quite refreshing. I enjoyed kiwi-strawberry best as its slight tangy taste helped cleanse the palate. R on the other hand loved the bestselling flavor cotton candy. Well, he is pretty biased with anything cotton candy.

Available in three sizes, regular (PHP100), large (PHP125) and quart (PHP250), you can indulge depending on the tummy space left after lunch or dinner.

We tried the Frozen Custards (PHP145, regular cup/cone | PHP180, large cup/cone | PHP190, sundae with two toppings, whipped cream and cherry) next and sampled vanilla, chocolate, coffee and butter pecan.

All were very rich in flavor. Thicker and richer compared to your usual ice cream because of egg yolks, these custards would delight those who prefer smoother and creamier textures.

I’m biased with coffee as I’m a caffeine junkie. But Rita’s chocolate is a safe option to go with especially if you have kids with you.

We also tried Rita’s Gelati (PHP150, regular | PHP180, large), one of its popular ice and custard combination. Angela chose a combination of Strawberry and Lemonade for our Italian ice and topped it with Chocolate and Vanilla custard.

Though it had a nice contrast of flavors, it may be a bit too overwhelming for some foodies. R for one thought that there were just too many things going on per spoonful. I liked it though as I found the battle of tangy and sweet flavors interesting. But if you are not very adventurous with your sweets, it is best to just stick with one custard and Italian ice flavor.

I’ve never tried Misto or Rita’s shake version (PHP160, regular | PHP180, large) before and I am so glad that Angela introduced it to us. We sampled Mocha Ice and Choco Custard during our visit and R loved it. It was rich in flavor yet not overwhelming that it’ll make you gag for water. It is perfect to battle the heat waves!

Last served to us was Blendini (PHP170, regular | PHP190, all custard) or a thicker version of Misto as it includes one topping of your choice. Angela made us try Mango ice with Vanilla custard and Walnuts. It reminded me of the delightful mixed sundae of a famous fast food chain but this one is richer and creamier because of the custard. If you are light eaters, one regular cup could be shared by two foodies. (And if you’re on a date, it’ll make it a bit more romantic too!)

Fun Fact: Did you know that Rita’s Italian Ice offers 79 ice flavors? Yes, SEVENTY-NINE. They do not offer all at the same time though in one branch. But this is a good reason for you to keep on visiting Rita’s!

It's my second time to visit. My first time was with my sister Mary D. who ordered something fruity flavored ice gelati with vanilla custard. I didn't enjoy the sour fruity part though. So now its my turn to decide for myself haha! I choose gelati again and it's good that you can taste test the flavors first prior to ordering. I chose iced chocolate fudge brownie and chocolate custard. It tastes soooo good that I'm craving for it right at this moment lol! It costs 150php for the regular cup. I'm not a chocolate ice cream person but I'll make an exception for this one.Btw, I think the hype already fizzled out,no queues on a holiday night and lots of vacant tables outside.128522128076🏼

They say that the best time for ice cream is always, and I couldn't agree more. 128512

Before we ordered, Jonathan R and I sampled a few flavors, and both decided to get the Strawberry-Banana Gelati and for the custard we opted for the vanilla. Since we just ate, we ordered the small cup, but it's still big, or maybe because we're still full. The small cup is for (150php) and it's really siksik.

Everything in the cup works well together in terms of flavor. The ingredients don't overpower each other which is really good.

The service was fast and efficient which is always a bonus star!

Thank you, Rita's!

The formula for happiness is pretty simple...
Ice + Custard = Happiness

The Strawberry Banana Gelati with Vanilla Custard is one awesome treat for only 150Php. That's the small size but the small size isn't that small at all. The container is filled with iced strawberry banana then it's topped with vanilla custard. And when you mix everything you will have like a strawberry banana with vanilla milkshake. Happiness to the highest level!

Cheers to happiness Annechile S!

Love their frozen custard. Made fresh in-store, this sweet treat is almost twice as creamy as gelato, and doesnt melt as fast. They usually have four flavours but imho the best one is still vanilla.

I absolutely love their ice cream! I tried the cherry Italian ice with vanilla custard. The two flavors blend together and form a perfect harmony in my mouth. It might be too sweet for some though.

Something to cool myself down in this intense summer heat -- Black cherry cheesecake flavored ice with chocolate and strawberry custard! I find the ice a bit too sweet and lacking the tartness that I love in the usual Cherry ice but nonetheless, it was very refreshing. Hope I could try their halo-halo (which isn't available in this branch on weekdays) next time!

Dulce de Leche ice topped with Vanilla Custard easily falls under my favorites category. To be honest, wasn't a fan of the ice but i really liked the Vanilla Custard bc it is not that sweet and really tastes like a custard.

(Yes, this is my first time to try it bc i hate queuing up. Signs of being a 128117🏽.128541)

Rita's Italian Ice's Gelati is like an expensive non-carbonated Slurpee topped with creamy soft-serve ice cream128522

I've tried both the Chocolate Brownie & Marshmallow Peanut Butter Italian Ice with Chocolate Custard. I like the custard more than the italian ice. They were both good & perfect for summer, but not sulit & worth the hype imo. It's also not something I'll crave for anytime soon.

Ordered chocolate on chocolate gelati. Should have ordered the mint chocolate instead but it was crowded when we went in so we didn't get the chance to decide on anything else.
