Chinese Cuisine. It's likely that many of us would have his or her own childhood experience with this. Be it at home, or in a resto at your 'hood. Or that special place your folks or Lolo's and Lola's would treat us. For me, it was Shangri-la in West Ave. If you read this, you can say that, for you, it was (insert name here).

I would totally understand Baguio folks' sentimental love for RoseBowl, a city institution since 1969. Lots of awards, based on their plaques, and business card, even getting on Philippine Tatler's 2009 best restaurants list.

I'd eaten her a time or two pre-looloo, and pre-relocation. That was their old address down at Harrison St. near Burnham Park, the Baguio Market and Session Road.

Today, we decided to eat here. My mom wanted somewhere near, 3 minutes via Waze (check), and familiar (she'd eaten here before, plus loves Chinese, check), and fast (check).

It's my first time at their new address on General Luna Road, just near our house, so it's convenient. It's a nice place, location wise. It's a destination type of a resto so I like the still central location (not far from Upper Session Road, Leonard Wood, Teachers Camp, etc.), and plenty of parking in front and on the road. It's a weeknight, so it's quite easy to park and find a table. I'm sure this gets full on weekends. It even has a 2nd floor.

Interiors are clean, and simple. Lots of tables with lazy Susan's like a typical Chinese resto, though its interiors are too simple and not memorable.

We were tended to very quickly, seated, and the waiter was there to recommend dishes. Their waiters looked like they've been at this a long while with RoseBowl. Which is good. They know what the best sellers are and what to reco.

Truth be told, the food was not awesome. They were passable Chinese food, but I'm torn because I expected more from a place like this, even if the prices were good and relatively inexpensive. But comparing it to Chaya last night, this disappointed.

Our orders:

Fried chicken with kropeck (1/2 chicken P220) - the most decent of the dishes. Though I like the kropeck of other places. Best if you ask for sweet and sour sauce, rather than their ketchup. Rating 3.5/5

Rose Bowl Fried Rice (P199 good for 2 to 3) - pale, lacked flavor. Only good was it was soft. Nothing memorable. Rating 1.5/5

Sizzking Beef with onions - most pricey order. Almost P500. Really sizzling delivered, but it was a glorified Bistek tagalog that's slightly sweet only. And the beef was a bit tough. Rating 1/5

Pancit Canton with shrimp and tofu (we converted the tofu to more veggies) - it lacked flavor and oomph. A bit salty in some respect but lacked savor flavor on the other. It's like chop suey placed on top of the noodles. 2/5

Overall the service of the waiters helped raise this review to a 3. Otherwise the food is actually a 2 for me AT BEST. Sorry, Baguio folks and RoseBowl lovers. I tried ordering things I normally order in a Chinese resto that I'm trying for the first time, things that are easily met by the likes of Shangri-la, Causeway, Peking Garden, Wan Chai, David's, etc., but NO, this did not meet any reasonable expectation. Sorry. Maybe we ordered the wrong protein in the beef, but the Rose Bowl rice and noodles, especially naming it after the restaurant, did not meet a decent Chinese resto standard for me. The chicken, sure.

P. S. RoseBowl also describes itself secondarily as a steakhouse, and they oddly have an American menu at the back 2 pages using local meat. Didn't try it, though.

Must try: Chicken Mami pair it with pandesal! 128523

Lunch before returning to the city!

Good staff! They really helped us order with regards to the right portion seeing that we were a big group! This is a really good Chinese restaurant and not just in Baguio; I mean even compared to the restaurants in Binondo! Their famous dish would have to be the pata tim as seen on the photo; savory and so tender! Aside from that we had yang chow, sweet and sour pork, roasted chicken and dumplings.

Total bill for a party of 14 is not more than 3,000!

Minus one star cause they won't give us any chili sauce for our siomai and hakaw.

Last June we celebrated mama's bday up north and decided to meet up with relatives for lunch here in rosebowl. We ordered our favorite eggdrop soup along with other bestsellers: patatim, lumpiang shanghai, fried chicken, chopsuey. Ofcourse we requested for 2 orders each since were a family who loooves to eat!127834127858127831127865
All in all, the authentic taste remains the same even after so many years. Its still as delicious as ever, not oily but not dry either. They have a new location (not across burnham park anymore) and i think this new spot suits them better.
Ive got so many good memories in baguio as weve been going there yearly with lola since the early 90's for our summer vacation- and dining in rose bowl has always been part of our summer escapade. Im glad i got to enjoy their food once again got ren and drei to share it with 128076

The classic dining place in Baguio. It was located across Burnham Park before but now it has moved to a better location. Food is still good though. I particularly enjoyed the chopsuey with all its fresh veggies. I also like their egg fooyoong which I was told was a specialty of the house. The beef with broccoli though would have been better if it had more beef than broccoli. Servings are quite generous and the service is good. A trip to the City of Pines is incomplete without trying this resto.

Old school is the new cool, ika nga ni Jojo A. And you can't get any more old school in Baguio than Rose Bowl. Serves Chinese food staples like Yang Chow, Hototai, stir fried veggies, black pepper beef, hot & sour soup, etc. They moved to a new, bigger location. But as expected, andaming tao pa rin. We got a table at the 2nd floor, ordered something that could feed an entire army, and voila -- in a matter of minutes, our food was there! Fast, fresh, piping hot and scrumptious! Super efficient ang staff. Like clockwork, actually. No wonder my dad keeps coming back to this place, time and time again. Maybe I'll start a Rose Bowl tradition for my own family? Hmm...128523

My family and I had lunch here yesterday. This is my second time. Prior to dining we requested if they could set up a long table good for 19. They said they couldn't since 'matatamaan ung poste' even if hindi naman. Instead they had two large round table awkwardly placed side by side.

Anyways, we ordered of course the patatim, yangchow fried rice, crispy noodles, roasted chicken and hakaw dumplings. All was well except for the noodles they weren't crisp.

We got the family sized almond lychee as dessert for free since they had a promo with bdo.

Can i get a pata? And a team? Patatim? Not. LOL But being a person not really into patatim (definitely not a childhood thing 128121), i must say that i will definitely rate rose bowl's patatim (and lumpiang shanghai) 5 stars!!!
Tip: you better eat your food fast, it gets cold quickly up in the mountains 128516 (late post)

A trip to my hometown will never be complete without a visit to my favorite place for patatim. With their "falls off the bone" "melts in your mouth" patatim paired with their infamous fried rice, i recommend this to anyone who loves patatim :)

My family and I were expecting much from this old family favorite, but we were disappointed by the slow service and the inconsistent quality of food. The yang chow fried rice and hototay soup were nothing special, if not bad. The fish with tausi, patatim, and sizzling beef with onions were the best parts of our meal, but they were not enough to change our opinion of this restaurant that we will not be returning to.

This chinese restaurant is a Bgauio icon. Prices are reasonable, the taste was typical and the place was way better than the first. I would not have any second thoughts of returning to this establishment.

It was okay, it's like chinese fast food and if you're on a budget, this place will be ideal since prices are reasonable... this restaurant used to be located in session road but the place was torn down and they moved to gen. luna instead. Actually this place is way better than the other place since it's newer and since it's on a higher level, less langaw din 128518
